Gov’t regulations may force Nashville limos off the road

How many times have you heard from your liberal friends that a story like “Atlas Shrugged” could never come true, that it’s totally unrealistic? Earlier this morning I linked to a Hot Air feature about the National Labor Relations Board (NRLB) dictating air giant Boeing’s operational plans. Now, the Institute for Justice is highlighting how the city of Nashville is forcing independent limo operators to nearly double their prices. Ed Morrissey explains: The Tennessee Livery Association, a trade group formed by the largest competitors in the field, pressed the Metropolitan City Council to pass a wide-ranging set of mandates that not only forces customers to either pay more or opt for taxi services rather than the more comfortable limo services, but also imposes onerous new costs onto smaller, independent operators. Stories from a flash mob (of kindness) – part V

Our latest “flash mob” story comes from Stefan in Florida, representing the South Orlando 9-12 Project Tea Party: The group met this afternoon at the Kissimmee Workforce offices. Although quiet, we were able to deliver about 1/2 or bags to people out of work. With help of the Workforce office manager we were directed to a nearby outreach center where we were able to distribute the remaining supplies. Not only was this a very fulfilling afternoon, being able to help people who needed it, but we also made useful contacts for the future. Both at the outreach center for future volunteer activities, and new members for our group. In fact, about twice as many new people had found our event on meetup.com and joined us at the location. We really learned today that … Read entire article »

It’s official: 2012 depression has set in

I’ve been trying to hold it back, but the latest from Pew Research pushed me over the edge: thinking about the 2012 election officially has me depressed. InTrade has Obama sitting comfortably with a 61% chance of winning re-election. But I’m putting it closer to 95-98% that he retains the White House. The Republicans early field of likely contenders is filled with a bunch of completely uninspiring, has been, can’t win, and ridiculous candidates. I mean, look at this and tell me that laying on the train tracks doesn’t suddenly sound like a good idea: Let’s take a look at the scoreboard: 53% can’t even name a possible GOP candidate for 2012 that’s been talked about in the news (point Obama) When they are able to name a candidate, the person most associated with … Read entire article »

Stories from a flash mob (of kindness) – part IV

Many Blaze readers have answered Glenn’s call for a “flash mob of kindness” today and a number of them have shared their stories with us.  Learn more about their selfless work here and here. The latest inspiring story comes from Robert in Indiana.  He writes: When Glenn announced the date for the Acts of Kindness movement I knew I had to get involved somehow. I say this because April 21st is actually my 1st anniversary for finding a job again. As a sub-contractor to GE in July 2008, I was among the first in America who lost my job to the recession. I had just moved 600 miles away from home to take the job and was barely getting established when I got the notice. I was forced to pack up and move … Read entire article »

Project Gunrunner update: ATF ignored warnings, DOJ ignores document requests

Tick, tick, tick. Another Project Gunrunner disclosure deadline approaches for the Obama Department of Justice. And GOP watchdogs are hammering away at yet another stonewall erected by corruptocrat Attorney General Eric Holder. Late last week, Sen. Charles Grassley roasted the DOJ for failing to produce documents he requested in February — and released his own […] Read more CompleteProject Gunrunner update: ATF ignored warnings, DOJ ignores document requests … Read entire article »

KORUS Trade Pact Keeps Pressure on North Korea

By further cementing the positive relationship between South Korea and the United States, the pending South Korea–United States (KORUS) free trade agreement will further weaken the oppressive North Korean regime’s strategic position and help disabuse the regime’s leaders of any hopes they might have had of flagging U.S. support for the South. Ironically, opponents of […] Read more CompleteKORUS Trade Pact Keeps Pressure on North Korea … Read entire article »

Stewardship, Compassion, Justice and the U.S. Budget Crisis

Stewardship, compassion, and justice have been mentioned frequently in recent Christian commentary on our national fiscal crisis, and rightly so. Budgets are indeed moral documents; for example, it is wrong to pass down $200,000 in public debt to each child born today. These principles of stewardship, compassion, and justice have been well-established in serious conversation […] Read more CompleteStewardship, Compassion, Justice and the U.S. Budget Crisis … Read entire article »

In South Korea Free Trade Debate, Kaesong Should Be a Non-Issue

Some critics of the proposed South Korea–U.S. Free Trade Agreement (KORUS) have expressed concerns about imports from North Korea, specifically goods originating from the Kaesong Industrial Region. This should be a non-issue. The chart below compares how imports from North Korea are treated today and how they will be treated if KORUS is approved. With […] Read more CompleteIn South Korea Free Trade Debate, Kaesong Should Be a Non-Issue … Read entire article »

Nigerian Presidential Election: Religious Tensions Threaten Democratic Progress

Almost immediately after it was announced that President Goodluck Jonathan won Nigeria’s presidential election this past weekend, violence erupted in many northern states. This post-election violence unfortunately tarnishes the nationwide vote that most observers deemed to be an improvement over previous elections, although it is evident that some rigging did occur. Since the government transferred […] Read more CompleteNigerian Presidential Election: Religious Tensions Threaten Democratic Progress … Read entire article »

Morning Bell: Time to Make Cuts in the Department of Energy

Disco, mood rings and bell-bottom pants are relics of the 1970s relegated to the dustbin of cultural history. But one product of the 70s is still going strong and growing at a rapid rate, despite America’s monstrous fiscal crisis. It’s the Department of Energy (DOE), and in the last 10 years it has seen its […] Read more CompleteMorning Bell: Time to Make Cuts in the Department of Energy … Read entire article »

Tales of the Red Tape #7: Energy Department Plumbing for More Regulatory Powers

Not satisfied with just regulating the design of air conditioners, battery chargers, boilers, ceiling fans, dehumidifiers, dishwashers, dryers, freezers, furnaces, heat pumps, light bulbs, refrigerators, toilets, and washers, the U.S. Department of Energy is cracking down on shower heads. Trump Angry with Seinfeld Over Event Pullout

Jerry Seinfeld recently pulled out of performing at an event benefiting St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and the Eric Trump Foundation (run by the Donald’s son) due to disagreements with Trump’s continued raising of the “birther” issue when criticizing President Obama.  Trump wrote an angry letter to Seinfeld yesterday: “I just learned you canceled a show for my son’s charity,” Trump fired off in a scorching letter to Seinfeld yesterday, “because of the fact that I am being very aggressive with respect to President Obama, who is doing an absolutely terrible job as our leader.” “Celebrity Apprentice” star Trump piled on the insults, saying he wished he’d canceled his appearance on Seinfeld’s “failed” NBC show, “The Marriage Ref.” “We don’t care that you broke your commitment,” he wrote, “even though the children of … Read entire article »

Huck vs. Beck

Mike Huckabee is not happy with Glenn Beck’s portrayal of him on his radio show. His response to Beck’s criticism is on the HuckPac website: This week Glenn Beck has taken to his radio show to attack me as a Progressive, which he has said is the same as a “cancer” and a “Nazi.” What did I do that apparently caused him to link me to a fatal disease and a form of government that murdered millions of innocent Jews? […] He seems to fancy himself a prophet of sorts for his linking so many people and events together to describe a massive global conspiracy for pretty much everything. Sadly, he seems equally inept at recognizing the obvious fact that children are increasingly obese and that we now see clinical evidence … Read entire article »
