Key Vote NO on the Meng Amendment to the Student Success Act

As one of our over 6.9 million FreedomWorks activists nationwide, I urge you to contact your representative and ask him or her to vote NO on the Meng amendment to the Student Success Act, H.R. 5. This amendment would add a new title to bill authorizing federal funding for early childhood education.

Federal funding for education has increased steadily for decades with no perceptible impact on student outcomes. Analyses of federal early education programs, such as Head Start, have repeatedly found that such programs do not work, and the administrators of Head Start have even admitted in a report that the program shows no long-term benefits to students.

Early childhood education is not a proper function of the federal government, and this amendment, offered by Rep. Grace Meng, dangerously expands the Department of Education’s authority over the states. It’s bad enough that the Secretary of Education is indirectly controlling state K-12 education through the use of conditional grants. This amendment will allow him to do the same for preschools across the country, while at the same time authorizing still more wasteful government spending.

Please contact your representative and ask that he or she vote NO on the Meng amendment to the Student Success Act, H.R. 5. FreedomWorks will count the vote on this amendment as a Key Vote when calculating our Congressional Scorecard for 2015. The scorecard is used to determine eligibility for the FreedomFighter Award, which recognizes Members of Congress who consistently vote to support economic freedom and individual liberty.

Sincerely,
