United Way Affiliates Give $3 Million a Year to Planned Parenthood

United Way affiliates provide almost $3 million a year to Planned Parenthood, according to a money-tracking website that examines consumer and political causes. 2nd Vote, a conservative, nonprofit watchdog that tracks corporate spending, conducted what it calls “exhaustive” research of United Way affiliates and their giving to Planned Parenthood.  “Last year, 2nd Vote compiled an exhaustive list of United Way affiliates that helped fund the world’s largest abortion provider, Planned Parenthood,” 2nd Vote spokesman Robert Kuykendall said in a formal statement. “The latest available financial documentation for each of these affiliates indicates that United Way funnels almost $3 million to Planned Parenthood every year.” United Way Worldwide, based in Alexandria, Virginia, is a nonprofit that focuses on community-based charity.  2nd Vote said it conducted research on Internal Revenue Service Form 990 filings for United Way affiliates in … Read entire article »

Court Says BLM Can’t ‘Bootstrap’ Itself to Regulating Fracking

In a win for good environmental policy, the federal district court in Wyoming struck down the Bureau of Land Management’s controversial hydraulic fracking rule. The rule would have set federal water, chemical disclosure, and construction requirements for fracking operations on federal and Indian lands in addition to already existing state regulations. The Case At issue in the case was whether Congress had ever given the BLM (a Department of Interior agency) the duty or authority to regulate fracking. Quoting from a 1973 case, the court said of the BLM: “An agency may not bootstrap itself into an area where it has no jurisdiction.” Contrary to its claims, the BLM has neither a history of regulating fracking on federal lands nor congressional authority to do so. Congress clearly gave that authority (through the Safe Drinking … Read entire article »

Iran’s Unfriendly Skies

With the blessing of the Obama administration, Boeing Co. has negotiated the sale of a fleet of new jets to the world’s foremost state sponsor of terrorism. The $17.6 billion deal between the aviation giant and the Islamic Republic of Iran was made possible by the lifting of economic sanctions against Tehran in January. It is a reckless piece of business that Congress must address. Under terms of the memorandum of agreement, Boeing reportedly will supply 80 planes—including intercontinental jumbo jets—to state-owned Iran Air. The carrier, according to the U.S. Department of Treasury, has been routinely commandeered by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Iran’s Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics to transport rockets, missiles, and other military equipment, including materials and technologies with ballistic missile applications. Iran Air flights have also transported … Read entire article »

House Republicans’ Blueprint Bodes Well for Pro-Growth Tax Reform

House Republicans released a blueprint for tax reform on Friday. If Congress follows the architecture the blueprint lays out, it will create a strongly pro-growth tax system that will create jobs, raise wages, and increase opportunity for American families at all income levels. On the individual side, the blueprint calls for lower tax rates for all families and consolidates the current seven tax brackets to three. The brackets in the blueprint are 12 percent, 25 percent, and 33 percent. The blueprint does not specify what income levels they kick in at. The standard deduction is substantially increased to $12,000 for single filers and $24,000 for families. This will greatly simplify filing for many taxpayers. There are no personal exemptions, but the blueprint increases the Child Tax Credit to $1,500 per child. It also keeps the … Read entire article »

5 Reasons We Don’t Need Federally Mandated GMO Labeling

Senate Agriculture Committee leaders have released a new federal mandatory labeling bill for genetically engineered food. These Senators are trading a state mandatory labeling law for a federal mandatory labeling law. If passed, the federal government will make it national policy to mislead consumers and legitimize bad science. (Rather than just the small state of Vermont, which will be doing so soon.) Senate Agriculture Democrats on their Twitter page are touting how the bill will cover all 50 states and 25,000 more products than Vermont. However, the bill would allow the use of alternative disclosure methods, such as bar codes, as opposed to just on-package labels, as in Vermont. This entire move is in response to Vermont’s mandatory labeling law that goes into effect on July 1, 2016. The food industry argues that Vermont’s … Read entire article »

For Britain, June 23 Is Independence Day

In a historic referendum, by a margin of a million votes, the British people have decided to leave the European Union. Brexit is no longer a dream. It is a fact. It is a triumph for the simple idea that Britain should be governed by the British people. This is a momentous event in British history, and a dark day for the European Project. It is a victory for all Britons who voted. It is a triumph for the simple idea that Britain should be governed by the British people. And it is a tremendous, crushing rebuke for the European Union, and its desire to override the sovereignty of the nations of Europe. Brexit’s victory is a remarkable triumph. Virtually every major international organization opposed it, as did President Barack Obama and many other … Read entire article »

Why Americans Should Celebrate the Brexit Vote

The momentous victory for the Brexit campaign signals a new era of freedom for the British people. Britain outside the EU will be a stronger ally for the United States. After more than four decades of being shackled to the European Union (previously the European Economic Community), Great Britain has declared its independence. The vote for Brexit (52 percent of Britons cast ballots to leave the EU) is a vote for sovereignty and self-determination. Britain will no longer be subject to European legislation, with Britain’s Parliament retaking control. British judges will no longer be overruled by the European Court of Justice, and British businesses will be liberated from mountains of EU regulations, which have undermined economic liberty. Indeed, Brexit will result in a bonfire of red tape, freeing the city of London and enterprises … Read entire article »

How Immigration Fueled the Brexit Result

The vote by Britons on Thursday to leave the European Union doubled as a referendum on how the country views the issue of immigration. With immigration at an all-time high in Britain, voters concerned about related issues such as economic uncertainty and sovereignty decided to shed their national identity by voting to upend 43 years of life inside the European Union. The tension over immigration is similar to what’s playing out in the United States, but different in an important way, in that Britain, as a European Union member, has no control of its borders. That’s because as long as Britain is in the European Union, it has to allow anyone from the 28-member bloc to live and work there. According to experts, Britain has experienced the changing face of immigration over the years. Stephen … Read entire article »

The next way Republicans are trying to block the White House from getting around Congress

Joel Gehrke Rep. Gary Palmer, R-Ala., has a straightforward proposal to weaken the power of federal agencies: require them to hand over to Congress the money that they collect in fines, fees and penalties. To that end, Palmer introduced the Agency Accountability Act, which would require all money collected by the agencies to be transferred to the U.S. Treasury, at which point the agencies could get it back only if Congress gave it to them through the appropriations process. examinerpolitics.com … Read entire article »

Trump: Cruz, Kasich must endorse or no convention slot

Third-party candidates appear to sap more votes from Clinton

Joseph Lawler Hillary Clinton appears to lose more support in the latest general election polling when third-party candidates are considered. Two major new polls released Sunday both show the presumptive Democratic nominee losing more declared support than her rival Donald Trump when the Libertarian Gary Johnson and Green Party candidate Jill Stein are included in the polls. A new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll has Clinton beating Trump 46-41 percent in a head-to-head matchup. With the other candidates included, however, her lead drops to 1 percentage point: 39-38 percent. Similarly, a Washington Post/ABC News poll finds Clinton… examinerpolitics.com … Read entire article »

Border sheriff: It's like Afghanistan

Paul Bedard Mexican drug lords have stayed ahead of snooping cops thanks to a $2 phone app that allows them to hear police radio traffic, according to a top Arizona sheriff leading the war on drugs and illegal immigration. Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu told Secrets that scouts assigned to look out for police as drug shipments head north have been arrested with the apps open. Babeu said that the scouts, illegally in the U.S., are also equipped with militarized binoculars, encrypted radios and solar panels to keep their electronics powered for 20-30 days at a time. “My deputies don’t even have encrypted radios,” said Babeu, running for… examinerpolitics.com … Read entire article »

Auxit next? Right-wing Austrian politician threatens EU referendum

Joseph Lawler Britain’s vote to leave the European Union may inspire a copycat effort in Austria, the first move in a potential chain reaction that many opponents of Brexit feared may result from the vote. Norbert Hofer, the right-wing Freedom Party candidate who narrowly lost the presidential election in May, warned in an interview published Sunday that Austrians might seek a referendum of their own on leaving the EU if the European Parliament does not change course. If within the next year the EU does not reverse centralization, “then we must ask Austrians whether they want to be members,” Hofer told the newspaper Oesterreich,… examinerpolitics.com … Read entire article »

Clinton IT aide repeatedly pleads the Fifth

Sarah Westwood A transcript from a deposition with Hillary Clinton’s former information technology specialist made public Thursday shows the IT aide responded to more than 100 questions with the same answer. “On the advice of counsel, I will decline to answer your question in reliance on my rights under the Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution,” Bryan Pagliano, the staffer who set up and maintained Clinton’s private server, said after each question he was asked. Fact-checking the June 26 Sunday shows

Given that “What is the EU?” was a trending Google search after the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union, Americans rightly still had many questions about the Brexit vote Sunday. Why did a majority of voters from the United Kingdom vote to leave? What does it mean for Europe, the world, the United States? Could it affect the U.S. presidential election? PolitiFact can’t answer all of those questions, but we did hear a few specific claims worth fact-checking from the Sunday new shows. Who was behind the vote to leave One of the claims we heard was that … >>More … Read entire article »
