How States Could Restrict Use of Food Stamps in Trump Era

Officials in at least two states are preparing to ask the new Trump administration for approval to prohibit use of food stamps to buy junk food and candy—a restriction the Obama administration has opposed. At least 25 states already prohibit welfare recipients from using Electronic Benefit Transfer cards to pay for alcohol, tobacco, gambling, lottery tickets, guns, or adult venues. But heading into 2017, states such as Maine and Arkansas are looking to go further. The Maine Department of Health and Human Services plans to submit a waiver request to the U.S. Department of Agriculture as soon as Donald Trump is sworn in as president Jan. 20. If approved, it would allow the state to prohibit food stamp recipients from using their benefits to buy sugary items such as candy and soda. (adsbygoogle = … Read entire article »

Religious Freedom in Pakistan Takes 1 Step Forward, 2 Steps Back

The Pakistani government took a positive step forward earlier this month in renaming the National Center for Physics after the Nobel Prize-winning physicist Abdus Salam—a member of the Ahmadi community, a minority sect of Islam. Even though Salam received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, his achievement was largely ignored in Pakistan because of the stigma attached to the Ahmadi faith in Pakistan. Ahmadis believe that the last prophet was not Mohammed but rather Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, the founder of the Ahmadiyya religion who claims he is the Muslim messiah. In what is likely a reaction to the government’s move to acknowledge Salam’s achievement, there have been at least two major incidents of religious persecution against the Ahmadis. On Dec. 9, it was reported that an armed police contingent of the Counter Terrorism … Read entire article »

The Enormous Opportunity of Trump’s Presidency

In 2016, the American people voted to change the direction of our country. They elected a new president and vice president. They returned Republican majorities to Congress with a two-year probation period to show we can deliver results. This election cycle and its outcome were a loud message to the Washington establishment. In 2017, it’s my resolution to continue working to ensure that message translates into real results. That means keeping our promises and making tough decisions. For the last seven years, Georgians and Americans across the country struggled to cope with the worst economic recovery since the Great Depression. It’s time for bold changes that will get our economy growing again, and get Americans working again. The policy prescriptions of the Obama years failed. Live From Washington, It’s The Daily Signal

You may have noticed that when we describe The Daily Signal, we refer to it as a “multimedia” news organization. That’s because there’s not just one way to tell a story or cover an issue. Sometimes, the best way is via the written word and photos. Other times, it is through a series of information graphics or a produced video. You see, we strive to take advantage of any platform that allows us to reach and … Read entire article »

John Kerry Takes a Parting Shot at Israel in Middle East Speech

Secretary of State John Kerry delivered a detailed speech Wednesday defending the Obama administration’s recent abstention on a U.N. Security Council vote condemning Israeli settlements. Kerry claimed that the decision to permit the passage of the one-sided resolution was aimed at “preserving the two-state solution” to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which “is now in serious jeopardy.” The 70-minute long lamentation amounted to a passionate defense of his own failed diplomatic efforts to renew Israeli-Palestinian negotiations. Kerry proposed six principles that should guide future negotiations, including secure borders for both Israeli and a Palestinian state, a “fair and realistic” solution to the question of Palestinian refugees, and designating Jerusalem as an “internationally recognized capital of the two states.” (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Billed as a “comprehensive vision” of Arab-Israeli peace, Kerry’s speech boiled down to a … Read entire article »

What better way to ring out the old year than with a compilation of MSNBC’s 2016 insanity? (New Years Eve/Day open thread)

**Written by Doug Powers Among the people most traumatized by 2016 were various members of the liberal media who were carrying Hillary Clinton on their shoulders, excitedly rushing her toward the inevitable coronation at the White House, when suddenly they slammed at high speed into a brick wall of reality. Among 2016’s psychological crash test dummies bruised and demoralized were a number of MSNBC hosts, who overall had a really bad year. Try not to laugh at this: Aside from a traumatic Trump-triggering that left some of MSNBC’s most vulnerable breathing into paper bags and popping antidepressants from “Stronger Together” Pez dispensers, for my money, Tamron Hall calling Bill Clinton’s affairs “alleged” should get a nomination for 2016’s funniest media moment.
