Misleading Rhetoric Can’t Mask Failings of GOP Health Care Bill

“When you look at where we are, there’s over 85 percent of this bill that has universal agreement among Republicans.” That was the message from House Majority Whip Steve Scalise on Sunday. There is just one problem with that assertion: It ignores what is not in the bill. For the past 10 days, Heritage Action for America has repeatedly made the case that the American Health Care Act allows the core regulatory architecture of Obamacare to remain intact. Yet, proponents of the American Health Care Act continue to ignore this fundamental fact. The problem isn’t what’s in the bill; it is what is left out: repealing Obamacare. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Writing in The Wall Street Journal Thursday, Rep. Robert Pittenger states the obvious: he has “never voted for a perfect bill.” The North … Read entire article »

Trump’s Responsible Decision to End an After-School Program That Harms Children

President Donald Trump has clear justification for his recommendation to eliminate a $1.2 billion after-school program administered by the Department of Education. Rigorous scientific evidence shows that the program, called 21st Century Community Learning Centers, harms children. Advocates of evidence-based policy should applaud the president’s fiscally responsible decision, part of his fiscal year 2018 budget request. The role of the federal government in funding after-school programs increased substantially after Congress passed the Improving America’s School Act of 1994, which created 21st Century Community Learning Centers. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Congress wanted to open up local schools so that communities could use the space more extensively beyond normal hours. The after-school program was intended to “support continuing education and lifelong learning opportunities to children and adults to help keep the country’s workforce competitive for … Read entire article »

Long Before Neil Gorsuch, Judges Had to Be Liberal Enough for Chuck Schumer

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer arguably telegraphed his opposition to Neil Gorsuch as the next Supreme Court justice almost 16 years ago when, as a freshman Democrat from New York, he broke what he called a taboo to say the Senate publicly should make ideology a factor in confirming judges. “Schumer deserves credit or blame—depending on your perspective—for escalating the judicial confirmation wars,” @EdWhelanEPPC says. Today, Schumer is the Senate’s top Democrat and is leading the charge against President Donald Trump’s first high court nomination. Schumer not only is the Senate minority leader but a senior Democrat on the Judiciary Committee that will begin hearings Monday on Gorsuch and decide whether to send his nomination to the Senate floor for a confirmation vote. How Local Citizens Can Take Up the Fight Against Public Corruption

We hear it all the time from politicians: They are finally going to stop the “waste, fraud, and abuse” in government. In states with more corruption, like Pennsylvania, New York, or Illinois, calls to clean up government are frequent as well. The problem is that these promises rarely come to fruition. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); This week—Sunshine Week—is a perfect time to stop waiting for someone else to fix these problems. Let’s look to citizens, and a push for more open government, to get the job done. As the saying goes, sunlight is the best disinfectant of all. New York might be the epitome of a state where corruption and abuse have run wild. Politicians here have long failed to live up to their promises to fix things. The New York Legislature and governor have … Read entire article »

After Paul Ryan Admits Obamacare Plan Needs Changes, Conservatives Hope to Strike Deal Uniting Party

Conservatives in the House are proceeding with cautious optimism as they continue negotiating the bill that repeals and replaces Obamacare following an admission from House Speaker Paul Ryan that the legislation needs to undergo necessary “improvements and refinements.” The concession from Ryan comes just a week after the Wisconsin Republican told his fellow Republicans the bill, called the American Health Care Act, was the “closest we’ll ever get to repealing and replacing Obamacare.” But following the release of a report from the Congressional Budget Office that predicted premiums would initially rise under the proposal and 14 more million people would be without insurance next year, conservatives say they believe the door is now open for them to unite the conservative and moderate wings of the conference. What 2 Obama Judges Got Wrong in Striking Down Travel Executive Order

Two federal judges, both nominated by President Barack Obama, have issued injunctions against President Donald Trump’s revised executive order temporarily restricting travel from six terrorist safe havens in the Middle East and Africa. The decisions by Derrick Kahala Watson in Hawaii and Theodore David Chuang in Maryland should shock no one—not because the judges are correct, but because their decisions follow the same pattern as prior decisions in Washington state and the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals over the first order. These rulings ignore or misinterpret federal immigration law that gives the president the clear authority to act and prior Supreme Court precedents that support the legality of the president’s actions. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Watson issued a nationwide injunction against enforcement of Section 2 and Section 6 of Executive Order 13,780, … Read entire article »

Latest Projections Show Farm ‘Safety Net’ Is Going to Cost More Than Originally Projected

Farm subsidy apologists try to make the claim that Congress shouldn’t look to farm subsidies for savings because farmers already did their part to save money in the 2014 farm bill. In fact, they claim the latest projected savings are even greater than the small savings expected at the time of the bill’s passage. So, what’s the truth? The taxpayer-funded farm safety net (commodities/disaster assistance and crop insurance) is projected to cost $3 billion more than was originally projected for the five years of the farm bill. The commodity programs and disaster assistance are projected to cost $14 billion more than was projected; although the federal crop insurance program is expected to cost $11 billion less. It should be noted these reductions in crop insurance costs are due to lower commodity prices, not … Read entire article »

The Splitting Up Of The Democratic Party by Ted Rall

Before the election, some pundits were predicting that a Trump defeat would cause the Republican Party to split into at least two discrete new parties — one representing the old GOP’s business establishment, the other for the populist firebrands of the Tea Party. As the fight over gutting Obamacare reveals, those factions are in an uncomfortable marriage. But a full-fledged rupture doesn’t appear imminent. … Read entire article »

Americans Don’t Want to Get Rid of Valedictorians

More and more schools around the country are eliminating long-standing systems that rank high school students on the level of their academic achievement including the designation of senior class valedictorians and salutatorians. But Americans aren’t eager to embrace the change. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that just 24% of American Adults favor the elimination of systems that rank students on their level of academic achievement. Sixty-one percent (61%) are opposed, while 16% are undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.) (Want a free daily e-mail update? If it’s in the news, it’s in our polls). Perceptions Are That Trump's Policies Are Working By Michael Barone

Perceptions matter. People make decisions, even life-altering decisions, based on what they perceive as likely to happen. To the extent that public policy affects such decisions, the perception of likely policy change can affect behavior even before the change happens — even if it ends up never happening.    … Read entire article »

Debt Queen Nancy Pelosi concerned Trump budget proposal would result in ‘disaster’ across America

Debt Queen Nancy Pelosi concerned Trump budget proposal would result in ‘disaster’ across America

**Written by Doug Powers The wind-up: And the pitch: Nancy should know all about “disaster”: Pelosi was the 52nd speaker of the House. During her tenure, she amassed more debt than the first 49 speakers combined. The fact that Pelosi wants everybody to think a $1.1 trillion budget proposal is a draconian austerity proposal speaks volumes about what’s actually been a “disaster” for the U.S. the last several years. **Written by Doug Powers Twitter @ThePowersThatBe … Read entire article »
