We Hear You: ‘Relevant, Accurate, Honest News on Subjects That Matter’

Editor’s note: We heard from many of you about Editor-in-Chief Rob Bluey’s March 12 commentary on The Washington Post story questioning inclusion of The Daily Signal’s White House correspondent, Fred Lucas, in the press pool that covers President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence wherever they go. Here’s a hefty sampling. —Ken McIntyre Dear Daily Signal: I loved Rob Bluey’s article on The Daily Signal and its White House correspondent, Fred Lucas (“The Daily Signal Won’t Be Bullied by the Establishment Media”). Many years ago, being over 60 now, I started following politics on TV, which back then was our main source of information. It was before cell phones and computers, but I constantly saw the media’s bias—which really cemented my choosing the other side. I received The Washington Post’s e-newsletter as … Read entire article »

Before Trump Called for Cuts in This Government Program, Obama Did

The president’s budget called for slashing funding for a block grant program primarily because it was difficult to determine whether it was getting the desired results. That was President Barack Obama’s budget proposal for fiscal year 2012. It justified the $3.7 billion cut in the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Community Development Block Grant program by asserting: While flexibility may be one strong characteristic of the CDBG program, the use of funds and how states and communities distribute their funds lead to resources spread across many activities, diverse constituencies, and geographies without clear or focused impact. This makes the demonstration of outcomes difficult to measure and evaluate. The Trump administration budget blueprint, issued Wednesday, calls for eliminating funding for HUD’s $3 billion Community Development Block Grant program. “It isn’t just us who wanted … Read entire article »

Paul Ryan Stands by GOP Health Care Bill: ‘I Didn’t Come Here to Be Popular’

“I didn’t come here to be popular, I came here to get stuff done.” Those were the words of  House Speaker Paul Ryan at the National Review Institute’s 2017 Ideas Summit in Washington. Despite criticism from members of his own party, Ryan remains confident that the American Health Care Act (AHCA) is the bill to repeal and replace Obamacare, saying, “We actually, really, within our power as Republicans, have the once-in-a-lifetime chance of actually repealing and replacing Obamacare.” However, the House Freedom Caucus still opposes the bill “in its current form,” according to a tweet from the Caucus’ Twitter account. Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., a member of the Freedom Caucus, remains against the bill despite the promise of changes. The Hill reported that, “Meadows suggested he knew changes were coming, but indicated … Read entire article »

Here Are 4 Possible Outcomes for Gorsuch’s Confirmation Process

Confirmation hearings for Neil Gorsuch, President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court choice, will begin Monday, with the process culminating in one of four likely outcomes. Gorsuch, a 49-year-old federal appeals judge, could potentially see these outcomes as his confirmation process unfolds: He is confirmed with at least 51 votes after there are 60 votes to end debate, ending the threat of a filibuster. He is confirmed with at least 51 votes if Republicans choose to implement the nuclear option. He is confirmed with at least 51 votes after Republicans use the two-speech rule, a Senate rule that mandates the Senate stay in the same legislative day until filibustering senators give up on their efforts. His nomination is withdrawn by Trump. Rachel Bovard, director of policy services at The Heritage Foundation and a former Senate aide, told The Daily … Read entire article »

Why Trump’s Budget Proposal for the State Department Makes Sense

President Donald Trump has made some promising proposals to trim government spending in his recently released budget blueprint. Trump’s significant 2018 budget cut of 28 percent for the Department of State, the U.S. Agency for International Development, and other U.S. government foreign affairs agencies makes a lot of sense. The cut seems dramatic, but comes on the back of more than a decade of expansion during which the foreign operations budget nearly doubled. The Trump budget does many good things. For example, it eliminates the cronyist Overseas Private Investment Corporation, a move that Heritage Foundation senior trade policy analyst Bryan Riley and other Heritage scholars have long recommended. Also on the chopping block: USAID’s Global Climate Change Initiative and all payments to the United Nations’ climate change programs. In calling for the elimination of … Read entire article »

The Justice Department’s Latest Misbehavior

For the past decade, John Fund, J. Christian Adams, and I have been writing about the misbehavior, unethical conduct, and lack of professionalism exhibited by lawyers inside the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Justice Department, including the Voting Section. The situation apparently has not improved, given the serious accusations of unprofessional conduct made by 5th Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Jerry Smith in a recent redistricting opinion out of Texas, Perez v. Abbott. As we outlined in “Obama’s Enforcer: Eric Holder’s Justice Department,” the division has been involved in numerous cases like this. The cases range from a Louisiana federal judge accusing division lawyers of “grotesque prosecutorial misconduct” in 2013 as well as “skullduggery” and “perfidy,” to the abusive enforcement during the Obama administration of the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances … Read entire article »

Hopes Fade for a Political Solution to the War in Ukraine

Hopes Fade for a Political Solution to the War in Ukraine

KYIV, Ukraine—A Russian bank in the historic heart of Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, has become the epicenter of an escalating crisis that has Ukrainians doubting whether a political solution is still possible to end a three-year-old war against a combined force of pro-Russian separatists and Russian regulars. On March 13, protestors built a wall of cinder blocks, and laid sandbags and barbed wire to seal off a branch of the Russian state-owned Sberbank located just blocks from … Read entire article »

With Budget Plan, Trump Signals ‘Tough Love’ Approach to UN

With Budget Plan, Trump Signals ‘Tough Love’ Approach to UN

The Trump administration is promising to reconsider America’s relationship with the United Nations, with the White House aiming to limit U.S. financial contributions to the global body, and to enact reforms. In his first action suggesting a new approach to the international organization, President Donald Trump released a budget proposal Wednesday night that would reduce funding for U.N. peacekeeping operations and eliminate climate change programs. Trump, before he was inaugurated, signaled a harder-line approach when he sharply … Read entire article »

Fear not, because Dianne Feinstein will determine if Gorsuch is a ‘reasonable’ conservative judge or witch burning ‘originalist’

**Written by Doug Powers The Senate Judiciary Committee hearing for Neil Gorsuch began today, and Sen. Dianne Feinstein is troubled by the SCOTUS nominee’s reputation as an “originalist,” partly because of all the witch burning don’t-cha-know: Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) offered her interpretation of the Constitution at Monday’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearing for Trump’s nominee to the Supreme Court, Neil Gorsuch. In her opening remarks, the Democratic senator said she was deeply troubled by the nominee’s identifying himself as a constitutional “originalist.” Feinstein began by noting she was “deeply disappointed” that Obama’s choice for the Supreme Court, Merrick Garland, did not get the luxury of a hearing. Nevertheless, she said it is now the committee’s job to determine whether Gorsuch is a “reasonable mainstream conservative” fit for the highest court in the … Read entire article »
