Maryland City Considers Sanctuary Status Amid Immigrant Rape Scandal

Rockville, Maryland, the city home to the recent immigrant high school rape scandal, is considering declaring itself a sanctuary city. Although Rockville police have had a longstanding policy neither to question suspected illegal immigrants about their immigration status, or to cooperate with federal immigration authorities, the city is now considering the process of formalizing that informal standard by becoming a sanctuary city. Julie Palakovich Carr, member of the Rockville City Council, introduced an ordinance in early March in response to President Donald Trump’s pledge to beat back illegal immigration. Carr forwarded the ordinance at a hearing March 6 overflowing with local residents, including those in favor of turning Rockville into an official sanctuary city, and those vehemently against. But the discussion has now become much more complicated, as recently, two immigrants, Henry E. Sanchez from Guatemala, and … Read entire article »

Gorsuch Faces Questions About Supreme Court and Guns

Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, Neil Gorsuch, faced questions about the Second Amendment during the second day of his confirmation hearings, to which he responded, “Heller is the law of the land.” In the Heller decision, a case formerly known as District of Columbia v. Heller, the Supreme Court overturned Chicago and Washington, D.C.’s, virtual bans on handguns, upholding the Second Amendment rights of Americans. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, a Democrat from California, pressed Gorsuch about whether he “agrees” with the late Justice Antonin Scalia’s opinion in the case, which upheld an individual’s right to bear arms. Feinstein said: In D.C. v. Heller, the majority opinion written by Justice Scalia recognized that, and I’m quoting, ‘Of course the Second Amendment was not unlimited,’ end quote. Justice Scalia wrote, for example, laws restricting access to guns … Read entire article »

This Harmful Housing Rule Deserves to Be Overturned by Congress

In the last few months of the Obama administration, the Federal Housing Finance Agency advanced a final rule for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac called “Enterprise Duty To Serve Underserved Markets.” This rule establishes a duty for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the two government-sponsored enterprises, to support a secondary market for certain mortgages—ones related to manufactured homes titled as real property or personal property, blanket loans for certain categories of manufactured housing communities, preserving the affordability of housing for renters and homebuyers, and housing in rural markets. Despite the fact that the agency has now published the final rule in the Federal Register, the Congressional Review Act, passed in 1996, gives Congress expedited and simplified procedures to repeal rules finalized by federal agencies—including this very rule. For example, the Congressional Review … Read entire article »

Voters See Gorsuch Opposition As Politics, Not Issue-Based

Voters remain confident that Judge Neil Gorsuch will be approved for the Supreme Court and think he deserves it more than President Obama’s nominees did at this stage of the process.  Opposition to Gorsuch is seen as driven more by politics than concerns about his judicial thinking. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 49% of Likely U.S. Voters believe opposition to President Trump’s first Supreme Court nominee is due mostly to partisan politics. Thirty-five percent (35%) disagree and say that opposition is based more on honest differences of opinion. Sixteen percent (16%) are undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.)
