4 Takeaways From Neil Gorsuch’s Second Day of Questioning

Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch addressed physician-assisted suicide, conservatism, and the Constitution in a second and final day of questioning in his Senate confirmation hearings. On Thursday, the Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to hear witnesses testifying for and against the federal appeals court judge before scheduling a confirmation vote for President Donald Trump’s nominee. Here are four takeaways from Gorsuch’s responses to questions from the committee’s nine Democrats and 11 Republicans: Physician-Assisted Suicide and the Right to Die Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., recounting an emotional and personal story, questioned Gorsuch on his views on physician-assisted suicide, which proponents call “death with dignity.” One of the most moving parts of the confirmation hearings followed. “You make the statement that there is no justification for having anything to do with the end of someone’s life, … Read entire article »

Conservative House Freedom Caucus Could Block Obamacare Plan From Passing

With 25 of its members prepared to oppose the House GOP’s plan to repeal and replace Obamacare on Thursday, the House Freedom Caucus says it has the votes needed to block the bill from advancing out of the House. But Republican leaders in the lower chamber have entered into 11th hour negotiations with conservatives and centrist Republicans in an effort to gain their support for the bill. The House is expected to vote on the health care plan Thursday, and efforts to sway Republicans to switch their votes in favor of the bill are coming down to the wire. But as the White House continued its charm offensive Wednesday, it didn’t appear the number of lawmakers opposed to the bill was moving at all, which put its future in jeopardy. According to Alyssa … Read entire article »

London Attack Shows Challenge of Stopping Terrorism in Age of ISIS

At least four people were killed, including a police officer and the suspected assailant, and 40 others wounded in a terrorist attack Wednesday in London. British Prime Minister Theresa May described the suspected attacker, whose name she did not release, as a British-born man “inspired by Islamist ideology” whom the country’s domestic intelligence agency had investigated for connections to extremism. The man drove a large vehicle into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge, which leads to the United Kingdom’s Parliament, authorities said. After the vehicle crashed, the man got out and approached Parliament, where he fatally stabbed a police officer as he tried to enter the building. Police then fatally shot the attacker, authorities said. The Islamic State, the terrorist group also known as ISIS, on Thursday claimed responsibility for the attack. Heritage Foundation terrorism expert Robin Simcox told The Daily Signal … Read entire article »

What Constituents Are Telling Conservative Lawmakers About GOP Health Care Bill

Constituents of several conservative lawmakers are speaking up because they view the Republican health care replacement as too similar to the Affordable Care Act. “A large majority of constituents contacting Congressman [Jim] Jordan about [the American Health Care Act] are opposed to it,” said Darin Miller, a spokesman for Jordan, R-Ohio. Jordan was formerly chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, a group of conservative lawmakers. “They want him to fulfill the promise of repealing Obamacare and replacing it with legislation that reduces premiums and is patient- and doctor-centered, not Washington-centered,” added Miller. Alexei Woltornist, the communications director for Rep. Warren Davidson, R-Ohio, told The Daily Signal the congressman has received almost no phone calls from constituents in favor of the American Health Care Act. “Last I checked the count, we received almost 300 calls … Read entire article »

President Donald Trump’s nominee for the Supreme Court, Neil Gorsuch, promised that he would remain faithful to the Constitution in his second day of questioning before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, asked Gorsuch if he would honor precedent and remain faithful to the Constitution if confirmed as an associate justice of the Supreme Court. “I will ask you this,” Cruz said. “As a judge today, and as I believe, a justice in short order, will you pledge to be faithful to the law and the Constitution and neither favor nor disfavor any litigant based on who they are?” Gorsuch promised that he could deliver on this request. “I guarantee you no more and I promise you no less,” Gorsuch said. “That is precisely what we should expect,” Cruz said. Cruz said he was … Read entire article »

Gorsuch Addresses Physician-Assisted Suicide in Emotional Exchange

Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch responded to questions about end-of-life issues Wednesday during his second day of questioning before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., questioned Gorsuch on his views on physician-assisted suicide. “You make the statement that there is no justification for having anything to do with the end of someone’s life, encouraging the end of life,” Feinstein said. “Well, California just passed an End of Life [Option] Act.” The End of Life Option Act, which “allows terminally ill patients to legally end their life with medical assistance,” went into effect on June 9, 2016, according to CNS News. “I, in my life, have seen people die horrible deaths, family, of cancer, when there was no hope,” the California Democrat said, “and my father begging me, ‘Stop this Dianne. I’m dying.’” Feinstein … Read entire article »

This Law Puts Homeowners at Risk of Property Rights Violations

The owner of the resort didn’t ask his guests why they were there. He offered plush accommodations to those seeking to get away. Sometimes, guests would come to play golf at the private and very exclusive country club. Other times, they used the fabulous spa services down the road. Still others wanted to simply enjoy the nearby beach. But people came and stayed at the resort, and it was profitable. Some would call it a huge success. But not all of the guests were good people. A few brought their drug habits with them. And in 30 instances (over a period of 17 years in which the owner and his wife rented out rooms to guests 125,000 times), law enforcement got involved. The local police knew that the owner wasn’t involved in drugs. He … Read entire article »
