New Analysis: Obamacare Regulations Drove Up Premium Costs by Up to 68%

Until recently, the House was scheduled to vote on the American Health Care Act, the GOP leadership’s proposal to repeal and replace parts of Obamacare. That vote has been called off. While the American Health Care Act would have repealed some Obamacare regulations, the bill does not go far enough. Obamacare caused premiums to rise for various reasons, chief among them being the vast new regulations the law imposed on insurance markets. A new analysis from Milliman backs this up. The study provided estimates of the average impact that various Obamacare regulations had on premiums. These estimates are reflected in the chart below. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Most of these averages vary state by state, depending on demographic differences. Take the example of Oregon. While reinsurance may have driven up rates nationally, in Oregon … Read entire article »

Vote on GOP Health Care Plan Delayed, as Some Freedom Caucus Members Remain Opposed

The House was initially expected to vote on the American Health Care Act tonight. But according to the Associated Press, Republican leaders delayed the vote. The change came as Freedom Caucus members huddled for several hours following their meeting with President Donald Trump. It’s unclear when the vote for the bill will take place, but procedural votes will take place tonight, according to Politico. But the change is a setback for House Speaker Paul Ryan and Trump, who are struggling to drum up support for their health care plan from both conservative and centrist Republicans. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); House Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows, R-N.C., told reporters after a White House meeting that no deal had been reached on the House GOP’s health care bill. Meadows and members of the conservative House … Read entire article »

35% Want to Live in a Sanctuary Community

The rape of a 14-year-old girl in a Maryland suburban high school by two older students who were in this country illegally has moved the sanctuary city debate back on the front burner. Most voters don’t want to live in a community that shields illegal immigrants from the government, and many question the safety of such communities. Elected officials in many communities have declared themselves sanctuaries for illegal immigrants, refusing to cooperate with federal immigration authorities, and 35% of Likely U.S. Voters favor the community they live in declaring itself a sanctuary community. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 52% oppose their community declaring itself a sanctuary for illegal immigrants. Fourteen percent (14%) are undecided. Paul Ryan on scrapped AHCA: Americans ‘living with Obamacare for the foreseeable future’

**Written by Doug Powers Here’s a little bit of Friday news that would have been called “breaking” if I’d been able to break on it earlier, but the American Health Care Act will not be happening: House Speaker Paul Ryan sensationally pulled his Obamacare repeal bill from the floor Friday, a day after President Donald Trump had threatened to walk away from health care reform if he didn’t get a vote. After a dramatic day on Capitol Hill, … Read entire article »

Chris Matthews hardest hit? Effort to make Obama’s birthday an Illinois holiday falls short

**Written by Doug Powers Uh oh, Southside Not With You: Barack Obama’s name is revered in his home state. But the Illinois House has rejected making his birthday a state holiday. Legislation to make the 44th president’s Aug. 4th birthday a state holiday fell six votes short Tuesday. Chicago Democratic Rep. Sonya Harper says it would honor a man who adopted Chicago as his home and served in the Illinois State Senate. But Rep. Steven Andersson of Geneva suggested it be honorary. The Republican floor leader says even Obama wouldn’t want the cash-strapped state to give state workers another paid day off. I highly doubt that last part, unless Obama feared it might have caused his presidential library to be closed on his birthday.
