Your Household Share of Federal Spending Keeps on Rising. Here’s the Solution.

It’s sometimes hard to fully visualize a massive sum of money. Take $3.854 trillion for instance—the amount the federal government spent in 2016. That’s a lot of money, but America is a large country. It may be easier to picture if we knew how much spending each household would be responsible for if households all put aside an equal amount each year to cover the government’s spendthrift ways. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); This can also tell us what the average household should be receiving back in goods and services from the government for their tax dollars. The following chart shows the estimated federal spending per household in the U.S. from 2006 to 2027. The years 2017-2027 are based on the Congressional Budget Office’s January 2017 baseline projections of federal outlays, and estimates from a Harvard … Read entire article »

Trump’s Tax Proposal is a Strong Starting Point for Reform

President Donald Trump’s tax plan announced on Wednesday shows that he is serious about his campaign promise to cut America’s taxes. For too long, the American economy has been held back by an outdated tax system. Trump’s promise to lower tax rates and update the tax code will benefit all Americans. Chief among the proposed reforms is lowering tax rates for businesses and individuals. Lowering the business income tax rate to 15 percent has rightly received the most attention. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Currently, Americans pay a federal corporate income tax rate of 35 percent—one of the highest in the world. Because businesses are made up of people, it is those Americans who work for and invest in American companies who actually pay the tax. In fact, most of the recent economic research shows … Read entire article »

The History of ‘Extreme Vetting’ of Immigrants

The United States began as a nation of immigrants, and it continues to be so today. The ability to absorb people from around the globe is a hallmark of American exceptionalism. America has succeeded mostly through what The Heritage Foundation’s Mike Gonzalez has called “patriotic assimilation,” in which immigrants have not just been taught how to adapt to the economy of the U.S., but also the customs and beliefs of larger American culture. It is this fading notion of assimilation that has been a great strength for America since its founding. But, the extraordinarily welcoming nature of this country can be turned against it; assimilation simply won’t work on those who are expressly opposed to the idea. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); U.S. immigration laws have varied over the country’s history, but they have … Read entire article »

Trump’s Gorsuch Success Paves Way for Nation Governed by Lawmakers, Not Judges

Long after Donald Trump has left the White House, Justice Neil Gorsuch will likely still be at the Supreme Court. Once it didn’t look like it would happen this way. And it’s to the enormous credit of the Trump White House—and the Trump campaign, which relentlessly focused on the Supreme Court—that it did happen. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Of course, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell did a stellar job in refusing to give President Barack Obama’s nominee, Merrick Garland, a vote—saying that voters deserved a chance to weigh in on this important appointment, given how Justice Antonin Scalia died less than a year before the presidential election. Trump regularly discussed the Supreme Court opening on the trail, and talked about picking from a list of qualified judges that his campaign developed with help from … Read entire article »

Congress Asked to Eliminate $270 Million a Year in Solar Subsidies

Conservative groups wrote a letter to Congress Tuesday asking lawmakers on the appropriations committee to eliminate a solar subsidy program worth $270 million. Conservatives want Congress to pull funding from the Energy Department’s SunShot Initiative, citing recent investigations that found the program provided subsidies for rooftop solar power. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); The letter calls SunShot the “ground zero of the solar subsidy machine,” arguing that it gives out millions of dollars in subsidies through net-metering programs. Such programs force utilities to buy the electricity from rooftop solar panels at up to six times the market price, effectively forcing non-solar residents to pay more to maintain the grid. “Net metering threatens the stability of electricity grids by depriving them of necessary investment,” William Yeatman, an energy and environmental policy researcher at the Competitive … Read entire article »

This Little-Known US Ally Could Be Pivotal on Russia, China Policy

As the U.S. grapples with many complex challenges to its interests in the vast region of Eurasia, one country should attract Washington’s particular attention. Kazakhstan, the world’s ninth-largest country by land mass, sits right in the heart of Eurasia on what is best described as a convergence of global challenges and strategic opportunities for the U.S. These key challenges include nuclear proliferation, a resurgent Russia and rising China, Islamic extremism, and competition for energy resources. Partnership with Kazakhstan on these issues is important for the U.S. moving forward. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); In addition to these challenges, there are many opportunities for the U.S., too—and these opportunities cannot be ignored. Kazakhstan is a major hydrocarbon player and has the potential to help Europe alleviate some of its hydrocarbon dependency on Russia. In addition, major … Read entire article »

Obama Appointees Still Running the Show at Trump’s VA

Obama-era appointees remain in top posts at the Department of Veterans Affairs three months into Donald Trump’s presidency. This includes Allison Hickey, disgraced former undersecretary for benefits, who is now helping choose her successor, The Daily Caller News Foundation’s Investigative Group has learned. Then-candidate Trump called the VA the “most corrupt” and “most incompetently run” agency and said the leadership was rife with political hacks. Yet the panel picked to select candidates for undersecretary positions is staffed with … Read entire article »

Perfect: Well-to-do anti-greed progressive who endorsed Hillary and socialist with 3 homes team up to slam Obama for Wall Street hypocrisy

**Written by Doug Powers There’s a three-ring circus of hypocrisy here that makes me want to do nothing but sit back, grab some popcorn, and laugh hysterically: Sen. Bernie Sanders believes former President Barack Obama’s plan to receive $400,000 for speaking at a September Wall Street health conference is “distasteful,” The Vermont Independent reported Friday. Speaking with CNN’s Suzanne Malveaux, Sanders labeled the transaction “not a good idea” and said he was “sorry President Obama made that choice.” “I just think it does not look good,” Sanders said. “I just think it is distasteful — not a good idea that he did that.” […] Sen. Elizabeth Warren — another influential progressive — has also expressed concern over Obama’s speech, saying Thursday that the former President’s decision “troubled” her. It’s certainly enough for a joke setup: “A … Read entire article »

Federal Land Grabs Have Gotten Out of Control. Why Trump’s Executive Order Is a Positive Sign.

Draining the swamp doesn’t just mean shrinking the size of federal bureaucracies. It means reducing the role of government throughout our society—including its ability to seize land. A good place to start is President Donald Trump’s executive order, which calls for a review of national monument designations—a tool long used by presidents to unilaterally restrict land use. The tradition of presidents designating national monuments began in 1906 when President Theodore Roosevelt signed the Antiquities Act. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); That law was intended to prevent the looting of archaeological and Native American structures and objects, and it gave the federal government an expeditious path to do so. Unsurprisingly, its use has evolved into a federal power tool for making land grabs that cater to special interests, rather than welcoming input from local affected parties, … Read entire article »

Why This Judge’s Ruling Won’t Block Federal Action on Sanctuary Cities

Media sources are all breathlessly reporting that the Trump administration’s proposed termination of federal funding to sanctuary cities has been enjoined by a federal judge. But that is misleading, and the media is misinterpreting the injunction order in the same way the federal judge misinterpreted President Donald Trump’s executive order. At issue in the lawsuit filed in San Francisco federal court by Santa Clara County and San Francisco was Section 9 of Executive Order 13768, “Enhancing Public Safety in the Interior of the United States.” (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); If you read all of the news accounts, as well as the order of Judge William Orrick (an Obama appointee), you would think that Trump ordered the cutoff of all federal funding to sanctuary cities, from basic federal entitlement payments like Medicaid to discretionary … Read entire article »

With Support From Conservatives, House Republicans Move Closer to Obamacare Repeal Deal

Republican leaders in the House received a boost to their attempts to repeal and replace Obamacare on Wednesday as the Freedom Caucus, an influential bloc of conservatives, announced its support for a revised plan. The group of more than 30 lawmakers said it would support a new version of the bill, called the American Health Care Act. The revision includes an amendment crafted by Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows, R-N.C., and Tuesday Group Co-chairman Tom MacArthur, R-N.J. “The MacArthur amendment will grant states the ability to repeal cost-driving aspects of Obamacare left in place under the original [American Health Care Act],” the Freedom Caucus said in a statement. “While the revised version still does not fully repeal Obamacare, we are prepared to support it to keep our promise to the American people … Read entire article »

House Health Care Bill Moving in the Right Direction

New developments on the American Health Care Act may finally break the legislative logjam on the bill and make progress toward repealing and replacing Obamacare. New Developments Rep. Tom MacArthur, R-N.J., is proposing an amendment that would allow states to apply to the secretary of health and human services for “waivers” from Obamacare’s contentious insurance rules for a period of 10 years. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Most significantly, states could secure waivers from Obamacare’s costly “essential health benefits” requirement (the mandatory 10 categories of health benefits). Under the language of the amendment, the waivers would be virtually automatic. Federal control over state health insurance markets has been a costly experiment. Obamacare rules have contributed in a major way to skyrocketing health insurance premiums. This is especially true for younger people saddled with much higher … Read entire article »

Trump’s Unconventionally Successful First 100 Days

No two campaigns for the presidency are the same, and few were as surprising or unconventional as President Donald Trump’s nomination and subsequent victory. It should come as no surprise then that Trump’s “first 100 days” in office—an archaic benchmark set during a different era—have been equally unconventional and in many important ways successful. Nowhere is that change more apparent than in foreign affairs. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Eight years ago, President Barack Obama began his infamous apology tour, confessing the sins of America and ceding moral authority to any nation or world body willing to listen. To Europe he apologized for the “times where America has shown arrogance and been dismissive, even derisive.” Obama told the G-20 of world leaders that “with my election and the early decisions that we’ve made, that you’re … Read entire article »

Remembering Kate O’Beirne

I first met Kate O’Beirne, my new colleague at the Department of Health and Human Services, in 1986. At the time she was the deputy assistant secretary for legislation, and what an impression she made. Kate, who died on Sunday at age 67, was physically striking: a tall brunette with large eyes, a big smile, and a strong New York accent. She was friendly and engaging, but within seconds, one realized that she was a fountain of information and politically shrewd. She was a no-nonsense gal from Manhattan, a veteran of the rough and tumble of New York’s urban and ethnic politics, able to read allies and opponents alike with uncanny accuracy. HHS was a bureaucratic empire with many powerful kingdoms, a vast complex of law, rules, and regulations built over decades … Read entire article »

Here’s How Wrong Past Environmental Predictions Have Been

Each year, Earth Day is accompanied by predictions of doom. Let’s take a look at past predictions to determine just how much confidence we can have in today’s environmentalists’ predictions. In 1970, when Earth Day was conceived, the late George Wald, a Nobel laureate biology professor at Harvard University, predicted, “Civilization will end within 15 or 30 years unless immediate action is taken against problems facing mankind.” (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Also in 1970, Paul Ehrlich, a Stanford University biologist and best-selling author of “The Population Bomb,” declared that the world’s population would soon outstrip food supplies. In an article for The Progressive, he predicted, “The death rate will increase until at least 100-200 million people per year will be starving to death during the next 10 years.” He gave this warning in 1969 to … Read entire article »

Mike Lee Warns Trump About Taxpayer Funding of Soros Groups Overseas

For eight years, U.S. foreign assistance was tied to a leftist political agenda rather than American interests, and it’s now up to President Donald Trump to correct that, Sen. Mike Lee said Tuesday. “President Trump and his team must change the culture of American diplomacy,” @SenMikeLee says. Lee took particular aim at U.S. support during the Obama administration for the overseas work of nonprofits bankrolled by liberal billionaire George Soros. “Whatever one’s views about abortion, energy regulation, alternative family structures, they are neither core international priorities of the American people, nor essential to American national security. They are domestic political controversies, pet causes of a sort of privileged, globalist elite,” Lee said in the speech at The Heritage Foundation. Voters Like Capitalism Best

A radio host recently claimed Senator Bernie Sanders is the most popular politician in America today and would have defeated Donald Trump by a landslide in the presidential election had he been the Democratic nominee. The independent Senator ran on a Democratic socialist platform, but despite his political popularity, voters don’t share his economic views. (To see survey question wording, click here.) GOP Voters Like Trump’s First 100 Days; Democrats Really Don’t

Voters tend to think President Trump has failed to deliver in his first 100 days in office, but that’s largely because Democrats are so unhappy. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that only 29% of Likely U.S. Voters believe Trump’s first 100 days have been a success. Forty-five percent (45%) view his first months in office as a failure, while 25% rate them as somewhere in between. (To see survey question wording, click here.) (Want a free daily e-mail update? Science! Weather Channel shows Trump how Mar-a-Lago would look after ‘extreme scenario’ climate catastrophe in 80 years

**Written by Doug Powers There are few outlets that do more to push the man-made climate change apocalypse panic button than the Weather Channel, and their latest offering is a stew of the words that are often present in these kinds of stories: Might, could, would, may, if, perhaps, possible, suggests, speculates, eventually, and of course “if this trend continues.” There’s also a little swipe at the U.S. thrown in for good measure: The beginning of … Read entire article »
