Weak March Jobs Report Shows Need for More Reforms in Washington

Friday’s jobs report announced that businesses created 98,000 jobs, underperforming expert predictions, and showing the weakest gains in almost a year. It appears that the “Trump bump,” based on confidence from President Donald Trump’s election, has subsided as job creators await Washington’s next concrete steps on taxes or trade. On the positive side, the jobs report shows that the unemployment rate dropped to 4.5 percent (the lowest since 2007) from 4.7 percent last month, the number of people who were working part time but preferred full-time jobs fell by 151,000 to 5.6 million, and wages rose 2.7 percent from last year. Of more concern is the labor force participation rate, which factors in people who have given up looking for work, and which remained unchanged at a low 63 percent. As House Republicans try to negotiate an agreement on the design of Obamacare repeal and replace legislation, specific elements are often referenced using shorthand terminology. While understandable, this can result in confusion if the same (or similar) term is applied to different concepts. An example is the term “high-risk pool,” which has recently been used as a shorthand reference for what are really three different concepts, depending on who is using the term. Traditionally, the term “high-risk pool” refers to a separate arrangement under which insurance companies operating in a given market collectively subsidize (that is, pool) the extra costs for providing coverage to individuals who, because they are poor risks, have been refused coverage under standard policies. In this construct, those individuals are given coverage that is separate and different from that obtained … Read entire article »

Senate Confirms Neil Gorsuch for Supreme Court

The Senate voted 54-45 on Friday to confirm Judge Neil M. Gorsuch as the 113th person to serve on the Supreme Court. Gorsuch, a federal appeals court judge who was nominated Jan. 31 by President Donald Trump, will be sworn into office in two ceremonies Monday, the White House said. “As a deep believer in the rule of law, Judge Gorsuch will serve the American people with distinction as he continues to faithfully and vigorously defend our Constitution,” Trump said in a formal statement released by the White House. Gorsuch, 49, a favorite of conservative legal scholars, will take the seat of Justice Antonin Scalia, a conservative icon who died unexpectedly on Feb. 13, 2016. >>> Facing Democrat Filibuster on Gorsuch, McConnell Invokes Nuclear Option The vote, mostly along party lines, occurred after Senate Majority Leader … Read entire article »
