How Trump’s ‘Buy America’ Push Could Harm This US Steel Mill

FARRELL, Pa.– Halfway between Cleveland and Pittsburgh, in a piece of middle America collectively known as Shenango Valley, stands a steel mill that dates back to the late 1800s. Ed McMurray, 44, has spent nine years at the mill, NLMK USA, where he says he has worked “here, there, and everywhere,” spanning various components of steelmaking. “Somebody has to do it,” says McMurray, covered head to toe in a hardhat, protective jacket, and workboots as he walks through the scalding hot rolling section of the mill, where flashes of fire transform massive slabs of steel into a thinner, more usable form. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); The steelmaking operation during McMurray’s time at NLMK does not look like it used to. Almost two decades ago, as the American steel industry evolved through competition, innovation, and … Read entire article »

Congress Has Ceded Too Much Authority to Agencies. This Bill Would Restore a Healthy Balance.

Congress’ power of the purse is one of its bedrock responsibilities listed in Article 1 of the Constitution. The Supreme Court has reaffirmed this power on several occasions, including in a 1976 case when the Court declared, “The established rule is that the expenditure of public funds is proper only when authorized by Congress, not that public funds may be expended unless prohibited by Congress.” By allowing federal agencies widening authority to collect fines and fees and to repurpose those revenues, Congress has diluted its power over public funds and minimized its oversight ability. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Steps must be taken to restore this key constitutional power and bring accountability back to the appropriations process. Earlier this year, Rep. Gary Palmer, R-Ala., and Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, introduced the Agency Accountability Act of … Read entire article »

Uninspired French Voters Choose a ‘Centrist’ President Rather Than a Far-Right One

Uninspired French Voters Choose a ‘Centrist’ President Rather Than a Far-Right One

PARIS—As is the case most Sundays, Rue de Bac in central Paris was quiet this morning. The shops were closed, as were most cafes on this day when self-styled centrist Emmanuel Macron would defeat the far-right candidate, Marine Le Pen, to become France’s next president. Except for Le Saint Germain cafe, at the corner of Rue du Bac and Boulevard Saint-Germain. On the outdoor terrace, patrons sipped on coffee and munched leisurely on croissants, as is the … Read entire article »

Voters See Higher Costs, Lower Quality Care With Single-Payer System

Voters are split on whether they favor or oppose a single-payer health care system, but they do believe it will lead to higher costs and a lower quality of care. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 45% of Likely U.S. Voters believe if the government controls the health care system, the cost of care will go up. Twenty-eight percent (28%) think a single-payer system will drive down the cost of care, while 17% say it will stay about the same. (To see survey question wording, click here.) Colbert gets audience to completely change opinion about Comey firing in a mere 60 seconds

**Written by Doug Powers Just watch the first minute or so, because it’s a lesson in how to herd a confused audience that’s been exposed to Dems slamming the FBI director for quite some and now doesn’t quite know what to think at this point. Colbert started off by breaking the news of President Trump’s firing of James Comey — The audience roared in approval. A surprised Colbert then said the crowd must be loaded with “HUGE Donald Trump fans.” After that, Colbert mentioned Jeff Sessions (who recommended that Trump fire Comey) and the audience booed wildly. A complete 180-degree change in audience opinion, all within the span of 60 seconds. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); You might have heard of the movie “How to Train Your Dragon,” and this is “How … Read entire article »
