As Russia Uses Cyberattacks, Ukraine Bans Some Social Media Sites

KYIV, Ukraine—Citing Russian cyberattacks as a national security threat, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko signed a decree on Tuesday banning several popular Russian social media sites, as well as other Russian websites and news outlets, for three years. The move was part of a comprehensive cyber sanctions package against Moscow, which included a ban on VKontakte, or VK, a popular Russian-language social media site in Ukraine that is, in effect, an Eastern European version of Facebook. “I urge all compatriots to immediately get out of Russian servers for reasons of security,” Poroshenko wrote in a farewell statement on his own VK page on Tuesday. “Massive cyberattacks of the Russian Federation around the world, in particular, the recent intervention in the election campaign in France, indicate that it is time to act differently and more … Read entire article »

FCC’s Pai Defiant After Liberal Intimidation: ‘Folks Are Just Going to Oppose Whatever I Do’

The new Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai is not very popular with the left these days. His crime? He believes the free market, not the government, should determine the future of the internet. So aggrieved are the proponents of government-knows-best policies that they have taken to lambasting him on late-night talk shows, mean tweets, and even staged a “vigil to save the internet” outside his home on Mother’s Day. But Pai tells The Daily Signal he’s committed to rolling back Obama-era regulations and restoring a “light touch” at the FCC. As World Reels From Cyberattack, Trump Executive Order Could Help Counter Threats

A new executive order from the White House could help the U.S. defend against future cyberattacks, much like the one currently affecting 150 countries. President Donald Trump signed the order Thursday after a series of delays, but it was ultimately overshadowed by the worldwide ransomware attack that hit thousands of computers across the globe. The order is just 10 pages long, but covers a lot of ground. Specifically, it looks at cybersecurity policy in three areas: the government, critical infrastructure, and the nation as a whole. Government The executive order starts by squarely stating that the head of every agency “will be held accountable” for managing cyber risks. Each agency is to develop a risk management report that lays out how it is managing cyber risks, what risks the agency is willing to accept, and how it … Read entire article »

4 Questions About Declassifying and Disclosing Government Secrets

4 Questions About Declassifying and Disclosing Government Secrets

President Donald Trump did not violate the law when he reportedly revealed classified information about an Islamic State terrorist plot during a meeting last week with Russian officials, intelligence and legal experts say. But the news that Trump shared intelligence with the Russians that was provided to the U.S. by a partner country in the Middle East—a nation that had not given the Americans permission to share the information with Russia—raised questions about the legal issues … Read entire article »

A Massive Cyberattack Has Hit Over 150 Countries. Here’s How to Protect Your Computer.

A cyberattack is currently hitting countries from Great Britain to Russia, affecting hospitals, businesses, and home computers. The attack, also known as WannaCry, has reportedly affected over 200,000 businesses across 150 countries since initially being reported on Friday. In Great Britain alone, 16 National Health Service hospitals were hit. The number of those affected is likely to grow as more victims come forward and similar mutations to WannaCry begin to find their way into networked systems. As of the morning of May 16, upwards of 275 victims of WannaCry had paid a combined total of over $78,000 in ransom. WannaCry is being described as a “ransomware” attack—a cyberattack that locks out computer users until a ransom is paid. More Voters View Cyberattack As Act of War

In the wake of the international WannaCry cyberattack, voters say cyberattacks from other countries do greater economic damage than military attacks do and believe more strongly than ever that such attacks should be seen as an act of war. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 62% of Likely U.S. Voters believe a major cyberattack on the United States by another country should be viewed as an act of war. Planned Parenthood manages to shatter their previous self-unawareness record

**Written by Doug Powers Planned Parenthood obviously starts each morning with one goal in mind: To completely eclipse the previous day’s levels of shamelessness and self-unawareness. They succeeded wildly on Thursday. This is on a web page at the Planned Parenthood Action Fund website — I kid you not: Now this is how to invite a lightning strike: If there’s anything we’ve learned from Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, The Avengers) over the years, it’s this … Read entire article »

Journalism 2017: Time Mag’s cover is a DNC talking points memo in one illustration

**Written by Doug Powers Democrat Party talking points memos and MSM anonymous sources now pass as enough “journalism” to give us this kind of thing in 2017: I can recall no such cover after Obama’s “more flexibility after my re-election” hot mic comment to Medvedev or Hillary’s giddiness while handing Russia a relationship “reset” button, and those things actually happened. Time’s new business model must be to try and exist on a subscriber base consisting totally of … Read entire article »
