Restricting Steel Imports Would Hurt Our Allies, Not China

The Trump administration’s investigation of steel imports as a possible national security concern is the latest in a line of aggressive actions designed to boost the economy. The target of the so-called Section 232 probe is, in large part, imports into the U.S. from China. In recent testimony before the House Ways and Means Committee, the U.S. trade representative, Robert Lighthizer, argued that “we have to take on China when they do things that are inconsistent with our values.” Rather than affecting China, however, imposing tariffs on steel imports is likely to hurt some of America’s closest allies. While it’s true that China is responsible for about half of global steel production, very little of that steel makes its way to the U.S. As it turns out, many of the top steel sources are … Read entire article »

Pro-Life Group Claims Twitter Has ‘Suppressed’ Its Message

A pro-life group is claiming Twitter has “suppressed” its ads. Live Action, a nonprofit organization founded by Lila Rose to promote the end of abortion, released a statement Tuesday about its clashes with the social media giant. Twitter censorship accusations have been growing increasingly frequent in recent years. “While Planned Parenthood is allowed to advertise on Twitter, the social media company has suppressed Live Action’s ads, calling our pro-life messages offensive and inflammatory,” Live Action wrote. Live Action claims Twitter asked the group to delete many of its tweets regarding Planned Parenthood, the No. 1 abortion provider in the United States. “While it won’t censor Live Action’s and Lila Rose’s tweets outright, Twitter has banned our ability to advertise our content until we delete all the tweets it deems offensive—or, in reality, all the tweets … Read entire article »

Doctor: Insurance Wouldn’t Pay for Patients’ Treatments, but Offered Assisted Suicide

Dr. Brian Callister, a physician in Reno, Nevada, says two recent patients both needed life-saving treatments. “Not palliative care, not hospice, these would have been curative procedures,” Callister recalls. One patient was from California and the other was from Oregon, both states that passed physician-assisted suicide laws. Instead of offering to pay for their treatments, Callister says, the insurance medical directors in both states offered to cover his patients’ assisted suicide. Watch the video to hear more about these cases, and why Callister, who says he’s taken care of “somewhere in four figures worth of terminally ill patients,” now opposes assisted suicide. The post Doctor: Insurance Wouldn’t Pay for Patients’ Treatments, but Offered Assisted Suicide appeared first on The Daily Signal. … Read entire article »

New Studies Show a Consistent Result: Private School Choice Works

Time heals all wounds—except, it seems, in the research world. Opponents of parental choice in education, like publicly funded K-12 scholarships and vouchers, are not satisfied by new research findings showing that private school choice is working. It’s not enough that students using a voucher to attend private school are catching up to their peers in public schools. Private school scholarship students are still “not posting amazing gains,” in the words of school choice opponent Diane Ravitch. Apparently, it’s not enough to catch up to your public school peers if you attend a private school. You have to be “amazing.” One would think that parents of children who posted failing grades at a public school would be thrilled to see any improvement in their child’s new setting. Fortunately, studies released this week from Indiana and … Read entire article »

Proposed Law Would Require Food Stamp Recipients to Show Proof of Job Search

A Louisiana congressman introduced legislation that would strengthen work requirements for recipients of food stamps. “By putting certain perimeters or requirements on the program where you have to actually do job searches and you have to go do interviews and you have to participate in certain job training activities, it is migrating people from dependence to the workforce and that is a win for everyone,” Rep. Garret Graves, R-La., told The Daily Signal in an interview. According to a press release from his office, Graves’ legislation: Creates additional opportunities to satisfy the work requirement through a supervised job search. Reduces the number of SNAP recipients exempt from the work requirement. Retains state flexibility for exempting certain individuals from the work   requirement. Graves, whose legislation is titled “Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Reform Act of … Read entire article »

EPA Poised to Undo Obama’s Federal Power Grab

A highly controversial rule from the Obama administration may finally be on its way out. On Tuesday, the Environmental Protection Agency announced that it is going to put an end to the Obama administration’s federal power grab known as the “Waters of the United States” (WOTUS) rule. Specifically, the EPA and Army Corps of Engineers are proposing to rescind the rule and, for the interim until a new rule is developed, recodify the regulations prior to the WOTUS rule. The Trump administration should be commended for taking this critical action. The EPA and Army Corps of Engineers, through the Clean Water Act, were seeking to regulate almost every water imaginable. For example, under the rule, federal agencies could have regulated certain man-made ditches and even dry land that may hold some water only a few … Read entire article »

How to Restore Optimism and Verve to the US Economy

America’s entrepreneurial dynamism has been falling, and the cost of inaction grows daily. According to a recent study by the Economic Innovation Group, America “suffers from a problem of too little creation—not too much destruction—perhaps for the first time in its history.” Over the past decade, our economic and job creation engine has run out of steam. One critical underlying factor for this declining economic dynamism has been the startling decline of America’s economic freedom during Barack Obama’s eight-year presidency. To give just one example, during the Obama years, tens of thousands of new regulations were enacted that cost businesses over $100 billion per year in compliance costs. While the financial costs are huge, the real losses are the jobs that would have been created had entrepreneurs not been stifled by the heavy hand of … Read entire article »

California Issues ‘Travel Ban’ on Some Red States

Single-party dominance has made California a little crazy. After a “Calexit” secession effort failed when its leader decided to move back to Russia, the deep-blue state has now turned to other methods to resist the change in political fortunes. On Friday, the California Assembly narrowly failed to pass a plan to bring single-payer health care to the state, which would have cost more than double the entire current California budget. But in the age of Trump, the Golden State hasn’t been content to focus on its own issues. It has now turned its agenda outward by crafting its own “travel ban,” aimed at punishing sister states for not going along with its views. California’s Attorney General Xavier Becerra announced on Friday that the state would no longer fund travel to states deemed “discriminatory” toward … Read entire article »

Sheila Jackson Lee: Impeachment could take too long so Trump should just resign right now

**Written by Doug Powers President Trump’s tweets this morning about Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski are approaching “high crimes and misdemeanor” status with Rep. Ukraine Was Hit by a Massive Cyberattack. Why the US Must Keep Up Support for This Key Ally.

Large-scale cyberattacks against Ukraine on Tuesday reportedly hit government ministries, including the Cabinet of Ministers, several banks, a state power distributor, the Ukrainian postal service, a state-run aircraft manufacturer, and Boryspil airport in Kyiv, among other targets. The cyberattacks have also affected companies outside of Ukraine, including an advertising firm in the United Kingdom; Maersk, the Danish shipping company; a French manufacturer; the U.S. pharmaceutical company Merck; a U.S. law firm; and a Russian oil producer, Rosneft. Some cyber experts have stated that the suspected culprit is “hitting systems via the same leaked [National Security Agency] vulnerabilities as WannaCry.” However, the virus may well be a new version of ransomware that has not been seen before. While the source of Tuesday’s cyberattacks has not yet been conclusively identified, the secretary of Ukraine’s security council is reported to … Read entire article »

Missouri Tried to Discriminate Against a Church for No Good Reason. How the Supreme Court Leveled the Playing Field.

In a 7-2 decision on Monday in Trinity Lutheran Church of Columbia, Inc. v. Comer, the Supreme Court overturned a Missouri policy that discriminated against a church simply because of its religious character. Citing a provision in its constitution that bars aid to religious organizations, Missouri had disqualified Trinity Lutheran Church’s preschool from a competition for recycled tires for playground resurfacing. Even though the church’s application ranked fifth out of 44 applications on the merits, the preschool was categorically denied the right to compete and did not receive one of the 14 grants that the state ultimately awarded. The Supreme Court held that Missouri’s policy violated the First Amendment. Writing for the majority, Chief Justice John Roberts announced that “the exclusion of Trinity Lutheran from a public benefit for which it is otherwise … Read entire article »

Supreme Court Lays Solid Foundation for School Choice Growth

This week, the nation’s highest court made two decisions that could profoundly affect the future of educational freedom in the United States. On Monday, the Supreme Court ruled in Trinity Lutheran Church of Columbia, Inc. v. Comer that the state of Missouri violated the Constitution when it excluded Trinity Lutheran’s preschool, because of its religious affiliation, from participating in a state-funded playground resurfacing program. The state of Missouri had used a provision in the state constitution known as a “Blaine Amendment” to deny a grant to the Lutheran preschool to resurface its playground. The state grant program provides grants to nonprofit institutions and schools for resurfacing materials that are made from recycled tires. Blaine amendments, found today in 37 state constitutions, are named after Sen. James G. Blaine, R-Maine, who in the late … Read entire article »

The European Commission Just Fined Google $2.7 Billion. Such Foreign Antitrust Attacks Threaten US Innovation and Prosperity.

On June 27, the European Commission—Europe’s antitrust enforcer—fined Google over $2.7 billion for a supposed violation of European antitrust law that bestowed benefits, not harm, on consumers. And that’s just for starters. The commission is vigorously pursuing other antitrust investigations of Google that could lead to the imposition of billions of dollars in additional fines by European bureaucrats. The legal outlook for Google is cloudy at best. Although the commission’s decisions can be appealed to European courts, European Commission bureaucrats have a generally good track record in winning before those tribunals. But the problem is even bigger than that. Recently, questionable antitrust probes have grown like topsy around the world, many of them aimed at America’s most creative high-tech firms. Beneficial innovations have become legal nightmares—good for defense lawyers, but bad for free market … Read entire article »

How the Supreme Court Trampled on Private Property Rights in a Recent Decision

In last week’s decision in Murr v. Wisconsin, the Supreme Court upheld the Wisconsin State Court of Appeals’ ruling that two waterfront lots should be treated as a single unit in a “regulatory takings” case. In a blow to constitutionally guaranteed property rights, the decision denied a family just compensation for having the value of their land eviscerated by local government action. (Justice Neil Gorsuch did not participate in the decision of this case.) The Murrs are siblings who inherited from their parents two adjacent waterfront properties, along the lower St. Croix River in Troy, Wisconsin. The Murrs wanted to sell one of the lots and develop the other. Unfortunately for the Murr family, the lots had been merged under local St. Croix County zoning regulations, and the County Board of Assessments denied … Read entire article »

Were Confederate Generals Traitors?

My “Rewriting American History” column of a fortnight ago, about the dismantling of Confederate monuments, generated considerable mail. Some argued there should not be statues honoring traitors such as Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, and Jefferson Davis, who fought against the Union. Victors of wars get to write the history, and the history they write often does not reflect the facts. Let’s look at some of the facts and ask: Did the South have a right to secede from the Union? If it did, we can’t label Confederate generals as traitors. Article 1 of the Treaty of Paris (1783), which ended the war between the Colonies and Great Britain, held “New Hampshire, Massachusetts Bay, Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and … Read entire article »

Open Borders and Missing Adjectives in the Liberal Media

The open-borders lobby long has sought to muddy the issue of immigration by deliberately—and dishonestly—omitting the word “illegal” whenever possible and conflating all immigrants, legal and otherwise. “Human beings can’t be illegal,” they insist. The liberal media all too often have been complicit in the effort to sidestep the distinction, but it’s a distinction with a very big difference. (Substituting the euphemism “undocumented” for “illegal,” as they often do when including an adjective at all, doesn’t change that.) The phenomenon was on dishonest display when a young Muslim woman, Nabra Hassanen, 17, was fatally beaten with a baseball bat in the wee hours of  Father’s Day morning in what police determined was a “road rage” incident. Police arrested and charged a suspect, Darwin Martinez Torres, 22, an illegal alien from El Salvador. But The … Read entire article »

Terrorism Evolving and on the Rise in Europe, Expert Tells House Panel

Europeans who are joining ISIS make up one big reason the rise of terrorism isn’t going to be thwarted anytime soon, an expert on the subject told a congressional panel. “At least 5,000 to 6,000 Europeans who have fought alongside ISIS and other Islamist groups in Syria and Iraq are now returning to their home countries,” Heritage Foundation scholar Robin Simcox testified Tuesday. Simcox, the Margaret Thatcher fellow at the conservative think tank, specializes in terrorism and national security. He said the terrorist threat is becoming more widespread across Europe, pointing to Germany as an example. “There was an eightfold increase in plots between 2015 and 2016, largely due to a surge in plots involving refugees,” Simcox said. “In fact, Germany faced more plots last year than it did in the entire 2000-2015 … Read entire article »
