Civil Forfeiture Laws Often Enable Theft. Why These State Reforms Are Good News for Property Owners.

Civil asset forfeiture is a nationwide problem, and states across the country are continuing to tackle it. Just last week, two states took significant steps to further enhance protections against unjustifiable and abusive seizures of cash and property via civil asset forfeiture laws. On Friday, Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper signed HB 1313 into effect, bringing greater transparency and accountability to the process. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Meanwhile, the Connecticut legislature sent HB 7146 to the desk of Gov. Daniel Malloy. The bill proposes to make Connecticut the 14th state to require a criminal conviction before seized assets can be forfeited. The developments in Denver and Hartford are proof that the nationwide effort to reform civil asset forfeiture laws is alive and well. Indeed, more than 20 states have reined in the practice in recent … Read entire article »

New Study Finds Americans Don’t Mind Lower Government Spending Due to Tax Cuts

America’s tax code is horribly out of date. Thankfully, Congress and the president have outlined plans for updating the tax code and cutting Americans’ taxes. The public strongly supports this agenda. A recent study by The Heritage Foundation’s American Perceptions Initiative into American attitudes toward tax reform found that almost two-thirds (64 percent) of Americans say that the federal tax system needs major changes and reform. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); In addition, nine in 10 Americans (91 percent) agree that the system needs at least some changes. The prospect of tax cuts have some worried that they would lead to reductions in revenue, and have called for the tax cuts to be offset by new taxes or tax increases in other areas. However, tax cuts should not be paid for by tax increases elsewhere, and … Read entire article »

Exposing the EPA’s Gold King Mine Cover-Up

Does the Environmental Protection Agency care more about its image than it does about the environment? Its behavior in response to the massive 2015 Gold King Mine disaster in Colorado would suggest a very clear “yes.” The Environmental Protection Agency is hiding its incredible recklessness in the affair by giving official accounts that are clearly contradicted by ample evidence in the government’s possession. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); As the new EPA administrator, Scott Pruitt has an opportunity to … Read entire article »

Results of Virginia’s Primary Hint at Future for Trump, Sanders Movements

Results of Virginia’s Primary Hint at Future for Trump, Sanders Movements

In one of the first major primary races after the 2016 presidential election, a Republican candidate for governor who campaigned on a pro-Trump platform nearly pulled off an upset, while a Democrat candidate who cast himself in Bernie Sanders’ progressive mold lost.  Candidates perceived by some as establishment won in both the Democratic and Republican primaries for Virginia governor Tuesday. But another takeaway is that the polls—which predicted a nail-biter for Democrats and a blowout on the … Read entire article »

Coach Kennedy, Who Lost His Job After Praying, Makes His Case to 9th Circuit Court

Coach Joe Kennedy took his fight to be allowed to pray silently on the football field to court this week, appealing to a bench with a liberal reputation. “My hope is that, at the end of the day, the court will let me get back to the sidelines and back with my team,” Kennedy said in a statement after his appearance in the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. In late October 2015, Kennedy lost his job with the Bremerton High School football program in Bremerton, Washington, after administrators repeatedly told the Marine veteran to stop praying on the 50-yard line. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Kennedy’s lawyers argued Monday before a three-judge panel of the 9th Circuit in Seattle, Washington, asking the judges to overturn a U.S. District Court ruling against him, also in Tacoma. His lawyers … Read entire article »

2 Cases Threaten to Shut Down Public Prayer. Why the Supreme Court May Need to Act.

Two federal appeals courts are considering whether elected leaders throughout the Midwest and mid-Atlantic regions must abandon the 200-year-old practice of opening local meetings with an invocation. Both cases could end up before the Supreme Court by Christmas time. In one case, a self-described pagan sued the board of commissioners of Jackson County, Michigan, arguing that its tradition of beginning monthly board meetings with an invocation violates the Constitution’s Establishment Clause, the First Amendment provision disallowing government from establishing an official religion. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); In 1983, the Supreme Court in Marsh v. Chambers examined Nebraska’s practice of employing a salaried Christian chaplain who offered the Legislature’s invocations for 16 years, and held that “legislative prayers” at policymaking-body meetings are constitutional. The court noted that the first Congress wrote the Establishment Clause in … Read entire article »

Mattis Is Punting the Military Buildup to 2019

Secretary of Defense James Mattis has news for Congress and for the nation: The military buildup will have to wait until next year. Mattis delivered that message in a back-to-back series of appearances before Congress, one of them taking place in a rare prime-time hearing on Monday night. During both testimonies—which were delivered before the House and Senate armed services committees, respectively—Mattis told the Congress that the military buildup promised by President Donald Trump will have to wait until next year. He stressed that while rebuilding the size and capabilities of the military is important, the 2018 defense budget request will focus primarily on addressing near-term readiness problems. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Mattis’ message to both the House and Senate contained two themes: that the 2018 budget is simply intended to fill holes … Read entire article »

Democrats’ Obsession With Russian Election Hacking Makes Them Look Dumb By Ted Rall

They got Al Capone for tax evasion — only tax evasion. It wasn’t very satisfying for his prosecutors. But they couldn’t prove murder or racketeering. So they got him where they wanted him: behind bars. It wasn’t elegant. But they got the job done.  … Read entire article »

Because of Trump, the nation is now LESS prepared for the Y2K threat

**Written by Doug Powers The headline above is how I’m imagining this story will be spun at select mainstream media outlets: The beauty of federal bureaucracy is its ability to stop on a dime. A really, really big dime: (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Seventeen years after the Year 2000 bug came and went, the federal government will finally stop preparing for it. The Trump administration announced Thursday that it would eliminate dozens of paperwork requirements for federal agencies, including an obscure rule that requires them to continue providing updates on their preparedness for a bug that many feared would afflict computers at the turn of the century. […] Seven of the more than 50 paperwork requirements the White House eliminated on Thursday dealt with the Y2K bug, according to a memo OMB released. Officials at the … Read entire article »
