House Passes Kate’s Law, No Sanctuary for Criminals Act

The House of Representatives passed two bills Thursday focused on illegal immigration. One bill, Kate’s Law “enhances the current maximum sentences for illegal reentry into the United States, serving as a strong deterrent for deported felons seeking to come back to the United States,” according to its sponsor, Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va. It passed 257-167. The other bill, the No Sanctuary for Criminals Act, deems sanctuary jurisdictions, cities, and states that do not cooperate with immigration officials or enforce immigration laws, ineligible for certain types of federal funding. That passed 228-195. “Let’s pass this legislation for Kate. … Let’s pass it to stop more people from becoming victims of senseless, preventable tragedies,” said House Speaker Paul Ryan’s press office. 4 Goals for Trump’s European Trip Next Week

At the top of President Donald Trump’s agenda in Europe next week will be confronting Russia, delivering a major address on America’s vision for the continent going forward, and what constitutes “fair trade,” top White House officials said Thursday. “He’ll do what is necessary to confront Russia’s destabilizing behavior,” H.R. McMaster says. Trump will first go to Warsaw, Poland, for a major speech before traveling to Hamburg, Germany, for the G-20 Summit. The trip will include a meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin amid investigations at home about Russian interference in the 2016 election. 1.) Trump’s Action on Energy Empowers Local Leaders, Lays Groundwork for Prosperity

“One step forward, two steps back.” That’s how we summed up the situation the last time an offshore oil and gas exploration and drilling proposal was announced. That was in January 2015, when the Obama administration included several areas off the coast of Alaska and parts of the Atlantic coast in the 2017-2022 federal leasing plan. The proposed plan kept most coastal areas off limits. Unsurprisingly, President Barack Obama’s final plan took three steps back by withdrawing lease sales from the draft proposal, closing up areas off the Pacific, Atlantic, and Alaskan coasts, and restricting opportunities in the Gulf of Mexico and the Cook Inlet off South-central Alaska. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); In contrast, the Trump administration on Thursday announced the first step in a complete review of the federal offshore leasing plan … Read entire article »

GOP Senator Proposes Transferring Sanctuary Cities’ Federal Funds to Border Wall Budget

One Republican senator is proposing a new solution for sanctuary cities that do not follow the law: take some of their federal funding and transfer it to a budget for President Donald Trump’s proposed border wall. “How many innocent American lives must be lost before security becomes the first priority of immigration?” Sen. Luther Strange, R-Ala., asked the audience at an event Thursday at The Heritage Foundation titled “Securing the Border and Protecting Our Communities.”   “How many criminal aliens have to be released shy of justice being served for the rule of law to be affirmed as the first priority of a functioning society?” (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Strange’s legislation, introduced in May, would keep federal funds from being given to areas with sanctuary cities that fail to comply with the Department … Read entire article »

Fannie Mae Should Rethink Its Plans to Expand Role in Housing Finance Sector

Fannie Mae Should Rethink Its Plans to Expand Role in Housing Finance Sector

According to recent reports, Fannie Mae, the government-sponsored enterprise backed by federal taxpayers, plans to expand its role in the housing finance system by further relaxing general underwriting standards for allowable loans held in its financial portfolio. Under the expected policy change, Fannie Mae would broadly cover mortgages with high borrower debt-to-income ratios by increasing the maximum debt-to-income threshold from 45 percent to 50 percent, beyond the special exceptions set in its current underwriting structure. It is … Read entire article »

Trump Is Taking Steps to Help the Nuclear Power Industry. Here’s What Can Be Done.

President Donald Trump spoke on Thursday about what can be done to help the commercial nuclear power industry as part of Energy Week. “A complete review of U.S. nuclear energy policy will help us find new ways to revitalize this crucial energy resource,” the president said in remarks at the Department of Energy. The timing is apt, as the nuclear industry has hit rough times. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Bloomberg New Energy Finance reported earlier this month that over half of nuclear power operators are losing money for a collective loss of roughly $2.9 billion per year. In the past five years, a series of plants have closed or announced closure years before their operating licenses expired. And yet, the 99 reactors in America offer the reliable and efficient electricity available. Nuclear power provides roughly … Read entire article »

Meet the Socialist Leader Who’s Driving Bolivia Into the Ground

Socialist Evo Morales has been president of Bolivia for over a decade. Although he claims to be working for the people, his populist policies have been a major roadblock on Bolivia’s path to economic growth and development. During the Morales years, Bolivia has plunged in The Heritage Foundation’s annual Index of Economic Freedom. It remains the poorest country on the South American continent. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); At a June 13 presentation at the National Endowment for Democracy, Bolivian journalist Raul Peñaranda and Ronald MacLean-Abaroa—the first democratically elected mayor of La Paz—had little good to say about Morales. Since assuming office, they report, Morales has squandered roughly $2 billion on pet projects—for example, a world-class museum dedicated to himself (complete with his soccer jersey collection) in the isolated village of Orinoca, his hometown. He … Read entire article »

Here Are 3 Reasons the Senate Health Care Bill Should Expand Individual Health Accounts

As Congress works to undo the damage caused by Obamacare, members are looking for ways to maximize their opportunity to address Obamacare’s problems that drove up premium costs for insurance and reduced access to plans. One innovative idea currently under consideration: expanding the use of health savings accounts. These are tax-advantaged accounts that let individuals save for routine health expenses. Created in the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003, the use of these accounts has been successful, though limited, due to restrictions placed on them by Congress. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); The good news: Provisions for expanding these individualized health savings accounts have been included in both the House and Senate Obamacare repeal bills. Additionally, reports suggest senators are looking for additional ways to expand the accounts. More needs to be done to promote this … Read entire article »

More than 2 dozen Dems hatch ingenious plan to make Mike Pence president

**Written by Doug Powers You’d think Democrats would want to retreat and figure out how to prevent further self-immolation of their own party in upcoming elections, but instead some are opting for measures that would at best make Mike Pence the president while Hillary would continue to wander around in the woods: Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin (Md.) has introduced a bill that would create a congressional oversight commission that could declare the president incapacitated, leading to his removal from office under the Constitution’s 25th Amendment. Twenty-four House Democrats are now backing the bill, including the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, Rep. John Conyers (D., Mich.), Yahoo News reported Friday. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D., Fla.), the former chair of the Democratic National Committee, is also co-sponsoring the legislation. The support from top … Read entire article »
