No, America Is Not an Oligarchy Run by the Ultra-Rich

The recent electoral race between Republican Karen Handel and Democrat Jon Ossoff in Georgia’s 6th Congressional District was the most expensive ever for a seat in the House of Representatives. In all, $57 million were spent, approximately $27 million more than the next most expensive race. The sheer cost of the race has brought a favorite theme of the left back to the fore: the purportedly corrosive role of money in politics. For decades, left-leaning pundits and Democratic politicians have warned of the compound effect of Supreme Court rulings like Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, which loosened legal restrictions on campaign contributions, and rising income inequality, which allows a few very wealthy citizens to make very large donations. As The New York Times’ Paul Krugman puts it, “[We live in a] society in … Read entire article »

Some States Resisting Trump Voter Fraud Commission Probe

An odd assortment of states are taking varying positions on whether to cooperate with the Trump administration’s investigation into potential voter fraud. Some red states—whose voters solidly backed the president—are declining to collaborate and some solidly blue states are participating in the investigation. As of early Thursday, at least 20 states have agreed to provide publicly available voter information to the Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity, according to the National Association of Secretaries of State. Up to 19 states and the District of Columbia have declined to provide voter information, while another nine states are reviewing the decision, according to information from the National Association of Secretaries of State. Blues state that went to Democrat Hillary Clinton in 2016 such as Rhode Island, Nevada, and Colorado are providing requested information, whereas red … Read entire article »

Pro-Life Leaders Rally to Support Charlie Gard

U.S. pro-life leaders are asking the British government to honor parental rights and allow the parents of a terminally ill infant to seek medical care abroad. “In the tragic case of Charlie Gard, the British government has unjustly decided that his life doesn’t have the value of others,” said Tina Whittington, executive vice president of Students for Life of America, at a press conference Thursday. Charlie is an 11-month-old baby with an uncommon genetic condition that keeps him from breathing without help. He is also deaf and blind, according to USA Today. The European Court of Human Rights decided June 27 that the hospital could remove life support from Charlie. Great Ormond Street Hospital, the facility that has been keeping Charlie since October, is planning to remove his life support, The Atlantic reported. “One of the … Read entire article »

Trump Says West Must ‘Fight Like the Poles.’ Meet the Polish Soldier Who Fought for Our Freedom.

“Together, let us all fight like the Poles—for family, for freedom, for country, and for God.” Those were the words of President Donald Trump as he delivered a speech at Warsaw’s Krasinski Square in central Poland. Trump highlighted both the longstanding connection between the United States and Poland, as well as the enduring need for the West to stand strong in the face of tyranny. In a clear reference to the menace of Islamist terrorism, Trump said: “Our own fight for the West does not begin on the battlefield—it begins with our minds, our wills, and our souls.” Poland knows what it means to encounter a threat. It faced the twin evils of Nazism and communism during the 20th century, starting when Germany and the USSR invaded in 1939 and ending with the … Read entire article »

Congress Should Protect Taxpayers, Not Cave to Agricultural Special Interests, in Next Budget

The House and Senate agriculture committees, as evidenced by their recent farm bill hearings and complaints about wanting more handouts, seem to be focused on funneling money to agricultural special interests—even at the expense of taxpayers and consumers. There needs to be a check on these committees so that the interests of taxpayers and consumers are at least taken into account. The House budget is one way to provide this necessary check on the agriculture committees, especially since the next farm bill is expected in 2018. Unfortunately, recent reports suggest that such a check may not exist in the current House budget, with the House Agriculture Committee directed to cut as little as $8 billion over 10 years (fiscal years 2018-2027). If this turns out to be the case, this would be half of … Read entire article »

New Details on the Plot to Kill Pope John Paul II

New Details on the Plot to Kill Pope John Paul II

On May 16, 1985, President Ronald Reagan met with CIA Director William J. Casey in the Oval Office. What did Reagan and Casey talk about? The official record doesn’t tell us. I dug into all available materials at the Reagan Library and filed Freedom of Information Act requests for the release of records for April and May 1985—phone call transcripts, logs of phone calls made and received, letters, correspondence, memos between Reagan and Casey, and memos between Casey and … Read entire article »

**Written by Doug Powers Another Sunday is upon us, so here’s our weekly cavalcade of odds & ends. Leading off, remember not long ago when an MSNBC-loving Bernie Sanders-supporter went unhinged and tried to assassinate Republicans at a congressional baseball game? If you’re the Washington Post, how do you frame that? Easy! Journalism! ***** In the week leading up to the Trump/Putin meeting at the G20, CNN was chock full of reports about “sources” who told them Trump wouldn’t bring … Read entire article »
