Trump Well Behind in Winning Senate Confirmation of Appointees

The White House is turning up the heat on Senate Democrats for using delaying tactics to block President Donald Trump’s executive branch nominees, even as Trump trails recent presidents in the number of appointments so far. “These numbers show the Democrats’ true colors,” @SHSanders45 says. The president so far has nominated 197 persons for administration posts, of which 48 have won Senate confirmation. Trump blasted Democrats in a tweet Tuesday for procedural tactics in the Senate, which have included requiring cloture—a measure to end debate before a vote—and boycotting confirmation hearings to prevent a required quorum. The Senate Democrats have only confirmed 48 of 197 Presidential Nominees. They can’t win so all they do is slow things down & obstruct! — Donald J. Reinstating Work Requirements for Food Stamps Is the Right Path Forward

Most Americans believe able-bodied adults receiving welfare should be required to at least seriously look for work. A new piece of legislation in the House promises to advance that majority view in federal law. Rep. Garret Graves, R-La., recently introduced the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Reform Act of 2017 (H.R. 2996), which would provide a much-needed reform to the food stamp program (SNAP). The bill would strengthen work requirements for able-bodied adults without dependent children. H.R. 2996 would establish the principle that welfare assistance should not be a one-way handout. Assistance should definitely be given to those in need, but recipients should be required in exchange to take steps to support themselves. SNAP already has nominal work requirements for non-elderly, able-bodied adults without dependent children. However, under current law, states can request statewide or, more … Read entire article »

Brexit Means More Economic Freedom and International Prosperity. It Should Not Be Derailed.

The United Kingdom’s government triggered a two-year period of negotiations to exit the European Union in March. This “Brexit” process will offer the U.K. the opportunity to forge new trade relationships with nations around the world, including—importantly—the United States, as Heritage Foundation scholars have explained. Unfortunately, recent press reports indicate that the loss of Prime Minister Theresa May’s parliamentary majority in June 2017 elections may have led some British politicians to get cold feet and consider a partial Brexit or “soft Brexit.” This might leave the U.K. subject to certain EU regulations and still a party to the EU’s common external tariff arrangement with non-EU nations. Such a “half-baked” policy would be bad news for the British economy and for the cause of economic freedom. In short, it would be a terrible mistake—Brexit should … Read entire article »

The New Dominion: Virginia’s Ever-Changing Electoral Map By Geoffrey Skelley

In 2008 Barack Obama carried Virginia’s 13 electoral votes, becoming the first Democratic presidential nominee since Lyndon Johnson in 1964 to win the Old Dominion. Obama’s victory broke a run of 10 consecutive Republican victories in the commonwealth, and 13 of 14 going back to 1952. The 2008 presidential election started a new Democratic streak, which has now seen the party carry Virginia three consecutive times, with Hillary Clinton winning it by 5.3 percentage points in 2016. … Read entire article »

HuffPost embarking on dangerous mission to explore mysterious middle America

**Written by Doug Powers The fact that HuffPost is approaching this like they’re intellectual Eloi setting off to observe a bunch of cow-tipping Morlocks speaks volumes, but it’s sure to bring with it some fantastic moments of bewilderment and discovery: Having made its name as a home for liberals and the blog posts of coastal elites, the recently renamed HuffPost is seeking to reinforce its new, less partisan image with a seven-week bus tour through Middle America … Read entire article »
