France Is Once Again a Battleground for the Soul of Europe

President Donald Trump followed up a successful week in Europe with a visit to France for Bastille Day and the 100-year commemoration of America’s entrance into World War I. He also held a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron to talk about the Syrian civil war, the Middle East, terrorism, and other topics concerning both countries. While the two leaders have had a fairly rocky relationship so far, this is an important gesture for two countries that share so much history—whether they like it or not. In a sense, Trump is following up on his Poland speech, in which he appealed to the Polish people’s greatest national mores while calling for the country to embrace its role in Western civilization against forces that mean to destroy it. Despite serious differences in policy … Read entire article »

Congress Should Use Congressional Review Act to Strike Down Ill-Advised Arbitration Rule

On July 10, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau announced a new rule to ban financial service providers, such as banks or credit card companies, from using mandatory arbitration clauses to deny consumers the opportunity to participate in a class action (“arbitration rule”). The arbitration rule’s summary explains: First, the final rule prohibits covered providers of certain consumer financial products and services from using an agreement with a consumer that provides for arbitration of any future dispute between the parties to bar the consumer from filing or participating in a class action concerning the covered consumer financial product or service. Second, the final rule requires covered providers that are involved in an arbitration pursuant to a pre-dispute arbitration agreement to submit specified arbitral records to the Bureau and also to submit specified court records. … Read entire article »

6 Takeaways as Senators Question FBI Nominee Christopher Wray

President Donald Trump’s nominee to be the next FBI director said he wasn’t aware of Donald Trump Jr.’s email chain about a Russian lawyer that has consumed the media, but did stress the need for the FBI’s independence. “I do not consider Director Mueller to be on a witch hunt,” Chris Wray says. Christopher Wray also told senators Wednesday that he might “dig into” connections between Democrat Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign and the government of Ukraine. And Wray, under questioning, didn’t rule out voicing support for new gun control measures. Republicans and Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee alternately used the confirmation hearing to praise and press Wray, 50, a former Justice Department official who went into private law practice. Trump tapped him to replace James Comey, who he fired May 9. Here are six … Read entire article »

How Fossil Fuels Will Help Us Confront Climate Change

The debate over climate change policy pits two competing visions of the future against each other. On the one hand are the “true believers,” who see in global warming an existential threat to humanity. They want to slow the rise in temperature as soon as possible, and as much as possible. Their policy prescriptions focus on the curtailment, or even elimination, of the use of fossil fuels, no matter the costs in terms of slower economic growth and increased poverty. The “skeptics,” on the other hand, view global warming as a potentially serious issue. It might cause problems in the future, but the impacts cannot be determined now with any degree of certainty. Instead of attempting to forestall future warming, they focus on policies that will build societal wealth as well as scientific and … Read entire article »

America’s Energy Dominance Won’t Sacrifice Environmental Quality

President Donald Trump declared during energy week that the United States would “usher in a golden age of American energy dominance.” From rolling back egregious offshore drilling restrictions and power plant regulations to a policy review to revive nuclear energy, the Trump administration is making important headway to unleash America’s vast energy resources. But energy dominance need not mean disregarding our nation’s strong environmental record, as too many have assumed. Every announcement the Trump administration makes on energy and the environment has been met with vitriol and hyperbole from activist organizations and radical pundits. For example, when the Environmental Protection Agency and Army Corps of Engineers announced they were dismantling the Obama-era Waters of the United States (WOTUS) rule, Vice News wrote, “Trump takes steps to ensure more Americans have access to unsafe drinking … Read entire article »

House Conservatives Renew Calls to Cancel August Recess

Members of the House’s most conservative caucus again are calling for leadership to cancel the August recess so lawmakers can work longer on priorities such as health care and tax reform. “It just makes sense for our leadership to keep us here to focus on getting things done,” @RobWittman says. The latest pressure Wednesday from conservative lawmakers came after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced the day before that the Senate will delay the beginning of its own recess from July 31 until mid-August. “I applaud Leader McConnell for being willing to stay in, but more importantly than that it is all about getting the people’s business done,” Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, said at an early afternoon press conference, adding: And so whether it is … Read entire article »

Trump Must Stand Up for US Interests in Meeting With France’s Emmanuel Macron

President Donald Trump will be the guest of honor at the Bastille Day parade in Paris on Friday, marking the 100th anniversary of U.S. forces joining the fight against Germany in World War I. This will be his second visit to Europe in two weeks, following his successful trip to Poland and the G-20 summit last week. Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron will hold a bilateral meeting in Paris on Thursday and a working dinner at the Eiffel Tower that night. Discussion will focus on a number of issues, including counterterrorism cooperation between the United States and France, the U.S.-led fight against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, trade, climate change, and the future of the transatlantic alliance. Macron has been deeply critical of Trump over his decision to withdraw the United … Read entire article »

Sean Spicer’s Press Room Innovations Are Driving Elite Reporters Mad

“When Washington reporters ask hard questions, Sean Spicer turns to Skype.” That was the headline of a front-page article in USA Today last week, capping months of criticism of the White House press secretary. Spicer is being pilloried for the sin of including reporters outside the clubby White House press corps in daily press briefings—and not just reporters, but the inferior beings known as radio commentators and writers from public advocacy groups. The criticism has raged since the inauguration, and can be summed up by a Feb. 2 Daily Caller headline, “Journalists FREAK.” (Its caps.) Here’s a shoutout to Spicer and a personal thank you. As the director of media relations for the Reagan White House, I had the original mandate of expanding the administration’s outreach beyond Washington, D.C. We benefited from advances in technology—just … Read entire article »

Malpractice in America’s Crime Labs Is Putting Innocents in Jail, Letting Convicts Off the Hook

Junk science endangers lives. Forensic junk science in the hands of overzealous prosecutors, ignorant police detectives, and reckless experts threatens liberty. There is a crisis in America’s government-run crime labs—and it’s not just the result of a few rogue operators. The problem is long-festering and systemic. In April, Massachusetts state crime lab chemist Annie Dookhan made national headlines after investigations and lawsuits over her misconduct prompted the state’s Supreme Judicial Court to order the largest dismissal of criminal convictions in U.S. history. Prosecutors were forced to dismiss a stunning 21,000-plus drug cases after Dookhan admitted to forging signatures, misleading investigators, and purposely contaminating drug samples en masse over nearly a decade. Dookhan pleaded guilty to dozens of charges of obstruction of justice, perjury, and tampering with evidence. Hundreds of defendants have had their convictions … Read entire article »

For Congressman Behind Bill to Save Charlie Gard, It’s Personal

For Congressman Behind Bill to Save Charlie Gard, It’s Personal

One of two House Republicans who introduced a bill in hopes of saving the life of a terminally ill British infant has a personal reason to do so. More than 20 years ago, doctors diagnosed his younger sister as having leukemia, Rep. Brad Wenstrup, R-Ohio, told The Daily Signal. But the family’s insurance company wouldn’t cover a bone marrow transplant that was considered an experimental procedure. In the U.K., Charlie Gard, 11 months old, has a rare … Read entire article »

Trump Gives Important Military Backing to Taiwan

While much of the focus of President Donald Trump’s G-20 summit had to do with Europe, his trip could have big implications for Asia as well. The escalating tensions with North Korea, and the lack of demonstrable Chinese efforts in curbing North Korean efforts, are likely to be a continuing topic of conversations between Trump and President Xi Jinping of China. Any conversation between the leaders will also occur in the wake of the recently announced U.S. arms sale to Taiwan. The arms sale, the first by the Trump administration, is for $1.4 billion in assorted systems, including SM-2 Standard surface-to-air missiles, Mk 48 torpedoes, conversion and upgrade kits for Taiwan’s Mk 46 torpedoes, electronic warfare kits for its surface ships, and a variety of contractor support in areas such as logistics, maintenance, … Read entire article »

Al Gore undaunted by inconvenient truth about Antarctic iceberg

Al Gore undaunted by inconvenient truth about Antarctic iceberg

**Written by Doug Powers Another day, another natural occurrence for Al Gore to blame on your air conditioner, car and barbecue grill but definitely not his mansions and private jet flights to emergency summits about limiting emissions: It’s actually a jarring reminder that Gore’s an agenda-driven, greedy science hack. The same article Gore cites as more evidence of what’s being caused by global warming debunks Al’s “settled science”: There is no scientific consensus over whether global warming … Read entire article »
