How to Make NASA Great Again

In two years, it will have been a half-century since American astronauts first set foot on the moon. Apollo 11 was followed by five more successful voyages to the moon and back, an accomplishment of which NASA is duly proud. During the Apollo program, the National Aeronautical and Space Agency was at the top of its game, employing some of the best scientists and engineers the world had to offer. In the ensuing decades, however, national priorities shifted, and NASA saw its fortunes wane. While unmanned probes such as the Hubble Space Telescope and the Mars Science Laboratory have enhanced our understanding of our solar system, NASA’s manned projects, the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station, pale in comparison with the agency’s earlier accomplishments. NASA is starting to think big again. But … Read entire article »

Returning Seized Compounds to Russia Would Be a Mistake

In May, media reports indicated the Trump administration was considering returning two compounds—one in Maryland and one in New York—to Russia. Those compounds were seized by the Obama administration last December in response to Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election. Last week, in an interview with CNN, a senior White House official again raised the possibility of returning the compounds to Russia, saying the administration may do so “because we want to give collaboration, cooperation a chance.” Doing so, however, would be a huge mistake. Giving back the espionage compounds today in the hopes of seeing improved behavior from Russia in the future is naïve, and it would only serve to embolden Moscow. The administration should avoid this error. When the Obama administration seized the compounds last year, it simultaneously expelled 35 Russian … Read entire article »

The Hypocrisy of Linda Sarsour and Her Use of ‘Jihad’

Linda Sarsour is fighting back after being criticized for calling for “jihad” against President Donald Trump and his administration. During a speech at the Islamic Society of North America Convention, she said: I hope, that when we stand up to those who oppress our communities, that Allah accepts from us that as a form of jihad, that we are struggling against tyrants and rulers not only abroad in the Middle East or the other side of the world, but here in these United States of America where you have fascists and white supremacists and Islamophobes reigning in the White House. Although Sarsour clearly called for a nonviolent form of jihad—and anyone who suggests otherwise is being intellectually dishonest—hearing the co-chair of the Women’s March on Washington call for “jihad” against the Trump administration … Read entire article »

We Hear You: The Minimum Wage, Welfare, Medicaid … and Walling Off the Eiffel Tower

Editor’s note: Jarrett Stepman’s commentaries for The Daily Signal ring bells with readers. See for yourself in this selection of responses.—Ken McIntyre Dear Daily Signal: Jarrett Stepman writes in opposition to Seattle’s having raised the minimum wage: “Lincoln saw the ‘opportunity society’ and reaping the fruits of one’s labor as fundamental to the growth and underlying goodness of America. It was one of the many reasons he so fiercely opposed slavery.” Yikes, this commentary sounds profoundly trite, … Read entire article »

From Cactus Theater to the Met, US Government Pours Hundreds of Millions Into Well-Heeled Arts

U.S. taxpayers have paid $90,000 for a theater “performance” in which people commune with a tall cactus for an hour in the middle of an Arizona desert, “to discover what it can teach them.” On a posher scale, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York netted $1.2 million in taxpayer-funded grants from the U.S. government since 2009, nearly half of it last year. These are just two perhaps unexpected findings in a new report from Open the Books that reveals hundreds of millions of dollars in taxpayer money granted to thousands of nonprofits and other organizations by the National Foundation on the Arts and the Humanities. The report says the government foundation distributed $441 million to 3,163 entities in fiscal year 2016, which ended Sept. 30. Of these, 71 are “asset-rich” nonprofits, the report … Read entire article »

Most of Obama’s Green Policies Persist at Department of Defense

As Congress considers green projects in a military spending bill, the Trump administration hasn’t staked out a strong case on whether to roll back the Obama administration’s aggressive push for biofuels, wind, solar, and other renewables in the military. “The Pentagon has bought into climate change because it makes it politically more acceptable,” @myronebell says. During his confirmation hearing Tuesday, Trump nominee for Navy secretary, Richard V. Spencer, told the Senate Armed Services Committee that he was watchful of climate change. The committee unanimously approved Spencer. “The Navy, from my briefings to date, is totally aware of rising water issues, storm issues, etc.,” Spencer said. “We must protect our infrastructure, and I will work hard to make sure we are keeping an eye on that because without the infrastructure, we lose readiness.” This week, … Read entire article »

Voters Don’t See Pence As A Trump Replacement

Voters don’t think Vice President Mike Pence would do a better job than Donald Trump and say even if he did become chief executive, the media would be nearly as biased against him as they are against Trump. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that just 26% of Likely U.S. Voters believe Pence would make a better president than Trump. A plurality (45%) disagrees and says the former Indiana governor and congressman would not make a better chief executive. Slightly more (29%) are not sure. O-care remains, but just wait until the GOP takes control of Congr… oh, wait

**Written by Doug Powers Michelle summed it up nicely earlier: Whelp. If it’s a day that ends in “-day,” it’s another mortifying McConnell head-banging-against-the-wall day for the GOP…#oldiebutgoodie pic.twitter.com/dbfzt4n0Gs — Michelle Malkin (@michellemalkin) July 18, 2017 It’s official: Obamacare’s most likely going to be around for quite a while: Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell pulled the plug late Monday on the Republican effort to overhaul the U.S. health insurance system and pledged the chamber will now focus on only dismantling the 2010 health care law. “Regretfully, it is now apparent that the effort to repeal and immediately replace the failure of Obamacare will not be successful,” the Kentucky Republican said. His statement came after GOP Sens. Mike Lee of Utah and Jerry Moran of Kansas said they did not support the latest Senate health care draft and … Read entire article »
