A Republican Senator’s Warning to Trump: Forget About Replacing Jeff Sessions

In the fall of 2015, when I first spoke on the Senate floor, I gave Nebraskans and every member of this body my word that I would speak up when a Republican president exceeded his or her powers. At that moment, the Democratic president had taken to himself powers that the Constitution had not given him. My opposition was not that President Barack Obama was a Democrat, but rather that our brilliant Constitution intentionally separates executive and legislative powers. I gave my promise then because, despite the lazy partisan rhetoric of the city, not everything is actually a blood feud between Republicans and Democrats. That’s because American politicians at our best are acutely aware of the difference between justice and strength. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); That’s because when our body is working well … Read entire article »

10 States Ready Legal Action to Undo Obama Amnesty for ‘Dreamers’

A lawsuit by states seeking to end protected status for children whose parents brought them to the U.S. illegally could spare President Donald Trump from personally halting the Obama administration program. “DACA is an unlawful program that must be phased out,” @AGRutledge says. Or, immigration experts say, such litigation could force Democrats in Congress to bargain on stricter enforcement of immigration law. Last month, 10 state attorneys general, led by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, wrote U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions calling for the Trump administration to end a program called Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); The program shields from deportation those who were minors when their parents brought them to the country illegally, a population their advocates call “dreamers.” According to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, 1.4 million … Read entire article »

How Republicans in Nevada Caved to Crony Capitalism, and Lost

The story of Faraday Future and its $1 billion electric automobile plant in the Nevada desert is a cautionary tale about a governor who didn’t pay attention to the details. It’s a story about a Legislature that was so eager to create jobs that it failed in its responsibilities to the citizens of Nevada—and it’s about a rogue Chinese billionaire who is now over his head in trouble back home. The story began when the state of Nevada wooed and won the Tesla gigafactory in Reno. The jury is still out, but northern Nevada is booming and Tesla is one of the reasons why. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Nevada, like many other states, has a north-south divide, and the governor was eager to throw a bone to the southern city of Las Vegas. Then, … Read entire article »

How the CBO Can Begin to Earn Back the Public’s Confidence

With the ongoing debate over health care reform, the Congressional Budget Office has drawn increased attention from across the political spectrum. in particular, many have begun to voice frustrations about the CBO’s practices to the point that eight past directors of the CBO penned a letter defending the institution. More recently, legislation has even been introduced to dismantle, or diminish, the CBO’s role. A lot of this frustration is likely to be painted as partisan, angry, or vengeful, but it is quite apparent the CBO could ease some of these frustrations by engaging in more open and transparent communication. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); The CBO has especially been a target of frustration due to its refusal to openly score health care legislation. In fact, current CBO Director Keith Hall acknowledged this was a problem … Read entire article »

What Comes After ‘Skinny Repeal’ of Obamacare?

Republican senators are reportedly working on a so-called “skinny repeal” of Obamacare. While details remain sparse, no one should mistake this last-minute effort for being the culmination of Republicans’ seven-year promise to repeal and ultimately replace Obamacare. The inconclusive nature of the process stems from a fundamental divide within the Republican Party over how much of Obamacare to repeal and what, if anything, should take its place. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); This process was always going to be difficult—no consensus was built over the past seven years—but this week’s gamesmanship on the Senate floor highlights why conservatives are justifiably frustrated with the obstinacy of their more moderate colleagues. To quote Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., “There was a lot of show voting going on here 15 months ago.” As Heritage Action for America wrote previously, No one … Read entire article »

Freedom Fest Shows the Liberty Movement Is Alive and Well

While Hollywood actor William Shatner, TV commentator John Stossel, documentary movie maker Dinesh D’Souza, economist Steve Moore, political philosopher George Gilder, and entrepreneur John Mackey, among others, were all well-received at the 10th anniversary of Freedom Fest in Las Vegas last week, the favorite of the 2,100 libertarians assembled was Steve Forbes—magazine publisher, best-selling author, two-time presidential candidate, Heritage Foundation trustee, and homely philosopher. Following the off-key but spirited rendition of “Happy Birthday, Dear Steve,” Forbes thanked the crowd for their best wishes on his 70th birthday and proceeded to extoll the many virtues of capitalism. He praised capitalism for being entrepreneurial, creative, innovative, and “a force for good.” (He is no Randian apostle of radical egoism.) Firmly pro-life as well as being a libertarian, Forbes remarked: “Our founders understood well: First … Read entire article »

The Key to Making Local Communities Strong Again

How strong are America’s communities? Sadly, we know from decades of research, including work by the Social Capital Project, that they are growing weaker. Men and women are having fewer children in total, and they are also having fewer children within wedlock. Between 1970 and 2015, births to single mothers rose from 11 percent of all births to 40 percent. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Americans are spending less time in religious communities. Church attendance and trust in organized religion have dropped sharply since the early 1970s. Americans also participate less in secular voluntary associations such as the Boy Scouts and Rotary International—groups that historically have brought together people from different walks of life. The destruction of community life is a spiritual crisis for millions. They have been severed from local institutions that give meaning to … Read entire article »

Trump Wants to Shut Down OPIC. Will His Nominee Do It?

In its fiscal year 2018 budget, the Trump administration “proposes ceasing new business operations and initiating the wind-down of the Overseas Private Investment Corporation starting in 2018 to reduce unnecessary federal interventions that distort the free market.” A report this month by Heritage Foundation analysts explains in detail why this is an excellent idea. And yet in his opening statement at his July 11 Senate confirmation hearing, Ray Washburne—the man President Donald Trump has nominated to be the next (and presumably, last) CEO of the corporation—made little mention of it. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); When pressed by senators specifically about whether he would carry out the president’s order to close down the corporation, Washburne said he did not intend to “sit there and look at an organization and wind down,” and that he … Read entire article »

Why We Can’t Leave Afghanistan Now

The mission in Afghanistan has entered one of its most crucial periods. Now is not the time to pull back. The United States and its allies must finish the job. The U.S. has been involved in combat operations in Afghanistan for almost 16 years. To put that in perspective, consider that an 18-year-old soldier serving in Afghanistan today was only 2 years old on 9/11. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Yes, we have been there a long time. And as the Trump administration considers the way forward, it’s important to remember the goal of our mission. Unfortunately, too many political and military leaders over the years have wrongly defined success in Afghanistan, leading many Americans to question why we’re still there. Lofty “nation-building” goals—ensuring every road is paved, every girl goes to school, and everyone gets … Read entire article »

Republicans Welcome Military Transgender Ban; Democrats Don’t

Voters are evenly divided over President Trump’s decision to prohibit from military service those who want to live openly as the opposite sex. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 44% of Likely U.S. Voters agree with the president’s statement Wednesday in announcing his decision that “our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail.” Forty-five percent (45%) disagree, while 11% are undecided. Schumer, Pelosi praise GOP trio for helping put Dems back in the majority

**Written by Doug Powers Well, the Democrats got more of the one-way “bipartisanship” they love from Republicans. Nancy Pelosi thanked three GOP senators in particular: House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) thanked the three GOP senators who broke with their party to kill the Senate’s bill to repeal ObamaCare during a vote early Friday morning. In a press conference Friday, Pelosi thanked Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and Susan Collins (R-Maine) for breaking with their party … Read entire article »
