Venezuela’s Socialist Leader Asks for UN Meeting With Trump as His Nation Crumbles

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro says he is ready to meet with President Donald Trump, just days after Washington hit the ruling socialist regime with sanctions. Speaking Thursday to the newly installed National Constituent Assembly, an all-powerful legislative body packed with Maduro loyalists, the socialist leader called on Venezuela’s foreign minister to arrange a phone call or face-to-face or meeting with Trump at the United Nations General Assembly in September. Maduro’s request comes after the U.S. levied sanctions on eight top Venezuelan officials for violating human rights and democratic norms. The Trump administration also targeted Maduro himself, branding the Venezuelan president a “dictator” and freezing all of his assets subject to U.S. jurisdiction. Under the threat of further sanctions against Venezuela’s oil industry, Maduro suggested he would consider making a deal with Trump. “If [Trump] is so … Read entire article »

McCain-Reed Proposal Would Help Reform the Military’s Infrastructure. Here’s Where It Still Needs Improvement.

For the past 12 years, Congress has resisted calls from the Department of Defense to authorize another round of base realignment and closures. A new round is needed and is the best way for the Pentagon to objectively evaluate its infrastructure and shed capacity it no longer needs. Base realignment and closures have emerged as a sensitive topic for lawmakers in Congress in discussions about the 2018 National Defense Authorization Act. Closing unneeded military infrastructure is a politically unattractive position for many politicians, since it would involve displacement of jobs associated with military installations in their districts. But in reality, the net loss of displaced jobs is small. Instead, members of Congress should focus on the savings and opportunities that can be realized with a future round of base realignment and closures. Other members of … Read entire article »

Why FEMA Must Be Reformed Before Disaster Strikes

As Tropical Storm Franklin prepares to make landfall in Mexico, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is preparing to respond to similar situations that impact the United States. FEMA is tasked with leading the response to these devastating disasters, but since the 1980s, its involvement in small, local disasters has been on the increase. This trend of excessive involvement in small-scale disasters needs to change, as it ultimately makes FEMA and the United States less prepared for bigger, catastrophic disasters. Under President George H.W. Bush, FEMA declared 174 disasters, amounting to an average of 43.5 per year. Under Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, declarations rose substantially to 716 and 1,037, respectively, averaging 89.5 and 129.6 per year. Under President Barack Obama, declarations remained high with 854 total alerts being issued, or 106.8 … Read entire article »

Woman Tangles With State Government Over Airbnb Licensing Rules

Pennsylvania has shut down a small-business owner for helping others post on Airbnb, the website for renting short-term guest rooms in private residences. Sally Ladd filed suit against the state after receiving notification that she would need a real estate license to continue helping others manage Pocono Mountains properties online. The licensing necessary requires more than 300 hours of training, a physical office location, and three years of working under a broker, according to the Institute for Justice, a nonprofit legal foundation. “Sally spent years providing good service to happy customers, who loved and trusted her,” said Joshua Windham, a lawyer for the institute, which represents Ladd. “What you have here is Pennsylvania deciding that it knows better and forcing Sally to terminate those agreements or risk criminal penalties.” ICYMI: @IJ‘s taking on the real … Read entire article »

Not Too Late to Prevent ‘Death of Europe,’ British Author Says

Europe’s migration crisis is a lesson in historical and philosophical degeneration, a best-selling British author argues. “Almost everything in this book is also a warning, in my view, to America,” said Douglas Murray, author of “The Strange Death of Europe: Immigration, Identity, Islam,” in remarks earlier this summer at The Heritage Foundation. “All the things I described in my book are processes, which are the same ones that I think [are] happening in this country,” he said. Murray is the founder of the British think tank Centre for Social Cohesion, now part of another think tank, the Henry Jackson Society. A journalist and commentator who is an associate editor of the conservative British magazine The Spectator, he argued in his speech that Europe has become resigned to a broken immigration system, which ultimately … Read entire article »

House Conservatives Move to Revive Obamacare Repeal

House Conservatives Move to Revive Obamacare Repeal

The House’s most conservative caucus hopes to force a vote on a clean Obamacare repeal bill in coming weeks through a rare congressional procedure. The House Freedom Caucus, chaired by Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., will encourage members to sign a “discharge petition” allowing a bill similar to the December 2015 repeal of Obamacare—which passed both the House and Senate but was vetoed by then-President Barack Obama—to proceed to a floor vote. If the petition receives 218 signatures, it will … Read entire article »

Is the Conservative-Libertarian Alliance Worth Preserving?

That conservatives and libertarians could set aside their profound philosophical differences to join forces is a testimony to the seriousness of the communist threat in the post-war era. That they remain allied nearly three decades after the fall of the Soviet Union is a testimony to communism’s continuing grip on the conservative imagination—and to the immense influence that libertarianism has had on American conservatism. Indeed, it is only a slight exaggeration to say that mainstream American conservatism today looks at politics primarily through a libertarian lens. There is a pronounced tendency on the right to reduce politics to a zero-sum contest for liberty between the individual and the state. Conservatives may still live like Tocquevillians, but they tend to speak like Randians. American conservatism has not, however, been wholly subsumed by libertarianism. Marked differences … Read entire article »

These Obama Regulations Make a Strong Case for Tax Reform

Congress is pivoting to tax reform, which if done correctly, should replace a list of draconian Obama-era regulations that went to extraordinary lengths to keep American companies from leaving the U.S. Ironically, the Obama administration ignored the key incentives that pushed companies to try and leave, chief among them being a sky-high corporate tax rate. Last year, drug manufacturer Pfizer’s proposed merger with foreign-based Allergan was thwarted after new regulations were issued by President Barack Obama’s Treasury Department, forcing Pfizer, for the second time, to abandon its attempted restructuring. Why might U.S. companies like Pfizer want to move abroad? One major reason is that U.S. corporate income tax rates are significantly higher than those of our major trading partners. Each year other countries lower their rates while the U.S. corporate tax rate remains stubbornly … Read entire article »

Interest Groups Threaten Arizona Children’s Access to Educational Options

After their lawsuit failed to block Arizona families from choosing how and where their children learn, district school interest groups are trying again to stop parental choices in education. The Arizona teacher’s union and school board association filed a suit in 2011 trying to keep children in their government-assigned schools, even if the child was struggling in that school. But the Arizona Supreme Court upheld a ruling that said the state’s education savings accounts are constitutional, a decision that has allowed families to customize their children’s education according to their needs. Now, the union and other special interest groups are supporting efforts to repeal an expansion of the accounts. Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey signed legislation this year making education savings accounts available to all Arizona students. With an account, the state deposits a portion of … Read entire article »

Trump Hasn’t ‘Given Any Thought’ to Firing Special Counsel in Russia Probe

President Donald Trump said he doesn’t intend to fire special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating Russia’s interference in the 2016 election and possible ties between the Kremlin and the Trump campaign “I haven’t given it any thought. Well, I’ve been reading about it from you people,” Trump said Thursday during an impromptu press conference that followed a national security briefing with his team at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey. “You say, ‘Oh, I’m going to dismiss him.’ No, I’m not dismissing anybody,” Trump told reporters, referring to Mueller, a former FBI director. “I mean, I want them to get on with the task. But I also want the Senate and the House to come out with their findings. Now, judging from the people leaving the meetings, they leave the … Read entire article »

Trump: Maybe Warning to North Korea ‘Wasn’t Tough Enough’

President Donald Trump said Thursday that his “fire and fury” warning to North Korea’s dictator may not have been strong enough. He also turned up the heat on Kim Jong Un’s threats toward the U.S. territory of Guam. “Let’s see what he does with Guam. He does something in Guam, it will be an event the likes of which nobody’s seen before, what will happen in North Korea,” Trump said, adding: It’s not a dare. It’s a statement. It has nothing to do with dare. That’s a statement. He’s not going to go around threatening Guam and he’s not going to threaten the United States and he’s not going to threaten Japan and he’s not going to threaten South Korea. During two press conferences at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey—one … Read entire article »
