Another Bogus Score for Air Traffic Control Reform

While Congress has flown the coop for its August recess, the clock is ticking toward the end of the fiscal year on Sept. 30. Sept. 30 also marks the deadline for reauthorizing the Federal Aviation Administration, a task both chambers of Congress have yet to accomplish despite passing their respective FAA bills out of committee. A flawed Congressional Budget Office score is now making that task more difficult. The two chambers have taken starkly different approaches to the reauthorization. The Senate’s bill simply continues the status quo while exacerbating many of the FAA’s structural problems. The House bill, on the other hand, calls for long-needed reform to the nation’s air traffic control system by removing it from the federal bureaucracy and establishing it within a private, nonprofit entity. While the bill is not perfect, this … Read entire article »

In Misguided Response to Charlottesville, Apple Donates to Liberal Group That Endangers Conservatives

In trying to fight racism—a laudable goal—Apple CEO Tim Cook has made a huge mistake by choosing to donate $1 million to the Southern Poverty Law Center, an organization that smears some conservative groups as “hate groups.” “What occurred in Charlottesville has no place in our country. Hate is a cancer, and left unchecked it destroys everything in its path,” Cook wrote in an email to Apple employees Wednesday announcing the donation, according to BuzzFeed. Cook continued: Apple will be making contributions of $1 million each to the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defamation League. We will also match two-for-one our employees’ donations to these and several other human rights groups, between now and September 30. In the coming days, iTunes will offer users an easy way to join us in directly … Read entire article »

Poll: Most Voters Want Confederate Statues to Remain

Poll: Most Voters Want Confederate Statues to Remain

A new poll released Thursday shows a majority of U.S. voters want Confederate statues to remain where they are. The NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll asked voters if Confederate statues should remain or be removed. Sixty-two percent of the poll’s participants said the statues should remain. Only 27 percent of the participants said the statues should be removed. This poll comes as local leaders around the country are calling for the removal of Confederate monuments following violence surrounding a white nationalist rally … Read entire article »

How the Mainstream Media Gets Hate Wrong

We have a problem in the United States with hate. We saw this last week in Charlottesville, whether it be racism or anti-Semitism, whether it be the KKK or neo-Nazi. Those are hate groups, and they have no place in the United States and they should be condemned without mincing words without any equivocation. But we have a problem when organizations label good groups as hate groups. We see this with the Southern Poverty Law Center. It’s labeling good groups that it disagrees with as hate groups. So, it labeled the Alliance Defending Freedom, a public interest law firm that just this year won a Supreme Court case 7-2 defending religious liberty. It labeled that group as a hate group because it disagrees. It labeled the Family Research Council, a think tank here … Read entire article »

Put Parents in Charge of Education, Not Government

After three court battles, two legislative sessions, and an outside legal bill of over $500,000, we have yet to achieve what parents in Nevada want: the right, and financial ability, to oversee their children’s education. The lesson is one for the entire country. What went wrong? The Republican governor and Democratic-led legislature’s unwillingness to spend $80 million to fund education savings accounts, while being more than willing to spend $750 million on a new football stadium. Education savings accounts are a groundbreaking development that puts parents in charge of their child’s education. How it works: The state deposits public funds in a private bank account that parents use to buy educational products and services for their children. Notably, these accounts allow parents and students to choose multiple learning services at one time. Tasked with writing the … Read entire article »
