Don’t Withdraw From the US-Korea Free Trade Agreement

During his confirmation hearing in March, then-United States trade representative nominee Bob Lighthizer made the case that bi-lateral trade deficits are an issue in that they may point to protection embedded in the trading regimes of America’s partners. The U.S. and South Korea are currently at an impasse over the Trump administration’s demand to renegotiate in the U.S.-Korea Free Trade Agreement (KORUS) essentially because South Korea is asking the trade representative to identify exactly how KORUS is contributing to problems with market access. Korea is not prepared to renegotiate simply on the basis that the U.S. side is unhappy with the trade balance. It is skeptical and wants an investigation done to substantiate the links. The Koreans make a reasonable suggestion. Yet, it has been met with a threat from the … Read entire article »

The Role Pence Plays in the Trump White House

Vice President Mike Pence traveled through Latin America in August at a time when Venezuela was erupting with unrest. In April, Pence visited ally South Korea and stood on its border with its menacing neighbor to warn North Korea after a recent missile test that “the era of strategic patience is over.” And, in February, it was Pence who, at the Munich Security Conference, reassured America’s NATO allies. “Pence can talk to Trump and Capitol Hill. He speaks both languages,” @CraigSBPA says. But on the domestic front, and often behind the scenes, Pence’s role in the Trump administration is even more significant, say White House officials and policy advocates who work with the White House. Though very different in temperament and personality, Pence and President Donald Trump are genuinely close, observers say. The … Read entire article »

Union Bosses Have Too Much Control. It’s Time to Protect the Rights of American Workers.

For the past eight years, union bosses have held the upper hand over East Tennessee workers, as the previous administration tried to stack the deck in favor of unionization. The National Labor Relations Board and the Department of Labor combined to pursue an agenda that put union bosses and special interests ahead of the rights of individual workers and job creation. If there was any doubt the Department of Labor was pushing a partisan agenda, just look at former Labor Secretary Tom Perez’s new job: head of the Democrat Party. It is time to restore employee rights and create a pro-growth, pro-employee environment within the workplace, and I am pleased to already see the new administration working aggressively to create jobs by undoing job-killing regulations. I’ve said time and time again that promoting fair … Read entire article »

Congress Has About 60 Days Left. Here’s What Conservative Groups Think of the Progress It Has Made.

Congress has roughly 60 legislative days left in 2017, and conservatives want lawmakers to follow through on their promises. “The congressional agenda would be daunting even if lawmakers were content to just keep the trains running on time,” Dan Holler, spokesman for Heritage Action for America, the lobbying affiliate of The Heritage Foundation, told The Daily Signal in an email. “The reality is that given the failures of the last eight months, securing major conservative policy wins is essential.” In 2017, the House has about 50 scheduled days left in session, while the Senate has 60. During the GOP’s January retreat in Philadelphia, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., laid out goals for the GOP’s 200-day agenda. Those included repealing and replacing Obamacare, reforming the tax code, funding the border wall, confirming a justice to … Read entire article »

Mainstream Media: Trump’s Reaction to Hurricane Harvey Lacks ‘Empathy’

Every week, The Daily Signal’s Facebook show “Problematic Women” highlights strong conservative women, current events, and the hypocrisy of the “feminist” left. This week we’re highlighting some of the more outrageous reactions to Hurricane Harvey, including this idea that President Donald Trump lacked “empathy.” Instead of focusing on Hurricane Harvey victims, the mainstream media viciously attacked first lady Melania Trump for wearing heels on Air Force One en route to Texas. So we’re crowning her “Problematic Women of the Week.” The post Mainstream Media: Trump’s Reaction to Hurricane Harvey Lacks ‘Empathy’ appeared first on The Daily Signal. … Read entire article »

As GOP Senators, Governors Pitch Plan to Save Obamacare, White House ‘Can’t Imagine’ Backing Bailout

The White House says it “can’t imagine” supporting an Obamacare bailout, even as some Republican senators and governors are urging boosting federal subsidies to insurance companies to stabilize the endangered Obamacare exchanges. “I can’t imagine that would be something we would want to be involved in,” @PressSec says. The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee will be holding hearings starting next week on ways to maintain the health insurance markets and is expected to consider an increase in subsidies for insurers. Meanwhile, a bipartisan group of governors, led by Ohio’s John Kasich, a Republican, and Colorado’s John Hickenlooper, a Democrat, unveiled a plan calling for Congress to create a temporary fund for states to reimburse insurance companies for major losses. The Daily Signal asked White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders about … Read entire article »

Trump to Make Dreamers Decision in Coming Days

President Donald Trump will have an announcement in the coming days on the Obama-era program shielding illegal immigrants from deportation if they entered the country as children. “We love the dreamers. We love everybody,” @POTUS says. If Trump ends the program, as he reportedly plans to, the question could be how it will unravel. “We’ll issue it sometime over the weekend. Sometime today or over the weekend, we’ll have a decision. We’ll issue it sometime over the weekend, maybe this afternoon,” Trump told reporters on Friday. “We love the dreamers. We love everybody … We think the dreamers are terrific,” Trump said. The term “dreamers” is commonly used to describe illegal immigrants brought into the country by their parents as children. However, after that, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said at the daily … Read entire article »

Illinois Lawmakers Give Students More Opportunities in Education

In the throes of a debate about how much taxpayer money would go to Illinois public schools, state lawmakers have agreed to provide students more educational options. On Thursday, Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner’s signature created a program that allows for up to $75 million in tax credit-eligible contributions to K-12 private school scholarship organizations. Under the law, individuals and businesses can make charitable contributions to nonprofit organizations that award scholarships to eligible students. Donors will receive a credit on their state taxes worth 75 percent of their contributions. To be eligible for a scholarship, students must be from families with household incomes not greater than approximately $74,000. Commonly known as “tax credit scholarships,” this school choice opportunity helps thousands of students in 17 states access a quality education when their assigned district school … Read entire article »

Middle America, here she comes: If Warren throws her headdress into the 2020 ring, brace for a bitter clinger outreach like no other: Warren is well known for her acrid take on Wall Street money power, on the Trump presidency, and on all the forces in American life that, in her view, deny equal … Read entire article »
