In Positive Turn, Justice Department Prosecuting Bureaucrats Rather Than Entire Agency

Federal prosecutors have accused a group of U.S. postal workers servicing the Atlanta area of taking bribes in exchange for delivering shipments of illegal drugs. U.S. Attorney John Horn said, “For cash in their pockets they were willing to endanger themselves and the residents on their routes and bring harmful drugs into the community.” Contrast this approach—prosecuting individual deliverymen who violated the law—to how the Justice Department has handled similar cases in recent years. In 2013, Justice Department officials alleged that employees of UPS were violating federal law by shipping illegal drugs on behalf of online pharmacies. But instead of investigating and prosecuting any individual wrongdoers, the Justice Department intimidated UPS into paying a $40 million penalty in order to avoid criminal charges. Then in 2014, the Justice Department accused FedEx Corp. of 15 … Read entire article »

Betsy DeVos Stands Up for Due Process Rights in Campus Sexual Assault Cases

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos announced in a speech Thursday that she will roll back an Obama-era “guidance” document that drove colleges to implement Star Chamber-like tribunals to mishandle sexual assault cases. The guidance forced colleges to weaken already minimal due process protections for those accused of rape and sexual assault, and threatened schools that refused to do so with losing federal funding. The Education Department will seek “public feedback and combine institutional knowledge, professional expertise, and the experiences of students to replace the current approach with a workable, effective, and fair system.” DeVos highlighted a proposal by two former prosecutors for states to set up specialized centers with trained professionals for investigation and adjudication of sexual assaults. Another proposal is mandatory reporting of sex crimes to law enforcement as a condition of federal or … Read entire article »

Lawmaker Says Congress Will ‘Have to Be on Our Toes’ After Failing to Scrap $900 Million ‘Earmark’

After failing to stop what he called an “earmark,” one Republican lawmaker is preparing to fight the possible return of pork-barrel spending in Congress. Rep. Ted Budd worked to block $900 million in a transportation funding bill bound for an Amtrak project in New Jersey, saying the funding violated the House’s ban on earmarks. The North Carolina Republican’s amendment, which would have let other cities apply for the money, failed Wednesday in a House vote, 260-159.  “I had a lot of my conservative colleagues say, ‘Thank you for being in the fight and being in the lead,’” Budd said. “And then I also had some from the New Jersey [and] New York delegation come up and slap me on the back and say, ‘I am going to get re-elected because I fought your amendment,’” he … Read entire article »

Russia Will Not Win a Diplomatic Tit-for-Tat With the US

Russia Will Not Win a Diplomatic Tit-for-Tat With the US

The recent U.S.-Russian tit-for-tat—the expulsion of diplomats and the closing of consulates—appears to be resulting in more parity of representation between the two global powers. That is no bad thing. According to the White House, the United States and Russia now have three diplomatic facilities in each other’s countries and a like number of diplomats of about 455. It is easy for countries like Russia, China, or Iran to exploit the openness of American society and the … Read entire article »

Network newscasts are all over Dem senator’s corruption trial (JUST KIDDING)

**Written by Doug Powers You’d think a sitting U.S. senator on trial for corruption would be big news for the networks, and it probably would be if the sitting U.S. senator in question didn’t have that “D” after his name, which apparently stands for “Don’t go there: Wednesday was the first day of Democratic Senator Bob Menendez’s federal trial for bribery, but you would barely know it was occurring if you were only getting your news from the liberal Big Three Networks (ABC, CBS, and NBC). CBS News did briefly mention the trial in the morning, but they failed to follow up on the heated courtroom exchanges during CBS Evening News later in the day. Meanwhile, both ABC and NBC continued their complete and utter blackout of the story. Fox News Correspondent David … Read entire article »
