Hollywood Wants to Force This Profanity-Filtering Service Out of Business, and May Succeed

The ideological and philosophical divide between Republicans and Democrats has seldom, if ever, been broader and deeper, and the divide between partisans in the degree of their aversion to swearing in feature films is just the latest manifestation of that. A new Harris poll—commissioned by the makers of a forthcoming faith-based film, “Generational Sins,” that itself reportedly contains 32 profanities—found that Republicans are offended by swearing more than Democrats are, by a margin of nearly 2-to-1. Nearly half (45 percent) of Republicans surveyed, compared with just 1 in 4 (25 percent) Democrats, find the “F-bomb” objectionable, for example, the poll found. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Among all respondents, however, the poll found the use of “Jesus Christ” as a profanity and “G.D.” both narrowly edged out the four-letter F-word as vulgar dialogue that … Read entire article »

Trump Justice Department Ends Operation Choke Point

Republican House members announced Friday that the Justice Department has ended the controversial Obama-era program targeting payday lenders, gun shops, and other legal businesses, in response to several House Republicans who requested Operation Choke Point be shut down. “This is no way for law enforcement to operate,” House Republicans say. “We share your view that law-abiding businesses should not be targeted simply for operating in an industry that a particular administration might disfavor,” Assistant Attorney General Stephen Boyd wrote the GOP lawmakers in a letter dated Aug. 16. The letter continued, saying the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation “subsequently rescinded its list of purportedly ‘high risk’ merchants. The Department of Justice (Department) strongly agrees with that withdrawal. All of the Department’s bank investigations conducted as part of Operation Choke Point are now over, the … Read entire article »

2 Former Wasserman Schultz IT Aides Indicted for Conspiracy Against US

A federal grand jury Thursday indicted two former information technology aides of Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla.—Pakistani-born Imran Awan and his wife Hina Alv—on four counts of conspiracy in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. The FBI arrested Awan at Dulles International Airport July 24 as he was preparing to board a flight to Pakistan. When his wife Alvi left the U.S. for Pakistan in March, federal authorities found more than $12,000 in cash hidden in a suitcase. She had withdrawn the couple’s three children from local schools and does not intend to return to the U.S., according to the FBI. Far-Left Antifa Agitators on the Rise in the Age of Trump

When self-described anti-fascists showed up in force Saturday to oppose a rally of white supremacists in Charlottesville, Virginia, some of them turned violent, according to media reports and eyewitness accounts. President Donald Trump did not specify radicals who operate under the banner of Antifa, an abbreviation for anti-fascist or anti-fascist action, when he said Tuesday that “both sides” bore responsibility for the violence and bloodshed that left three dead and dozens injured. “They are not legitimate actors … Read entire article »

Hate Crime or Domestic Terrorism? How Charlottesville Federal Legal Case Could Proceed

The federal civil rights investigation into the weekend violence that occurred in Charlottesville, Virginia, could involve domestic terrorism and hate crime charges and isn’t limited to the driver who plowed his vehicle into a crowd of people, according to the Trump administration. Speaking on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Monday, “It does meet the definition of domestic terrorism in our statute.” In a fact sheet, the administration mentioned both possibilities. But a hate crimes case would be easier to bring because domestic terrorism cases involve a much higher burden for prosecutors, said Horace Cooper, a former constitutional law professor at George Mason University. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); A hate crime is an act of violence targeted at someone because of their identity—and it must be a legally protected … Read entire article »

Justice Department Opens Civil Rights Probe of Violence in Charlottesville

The Justice Department has launched a civil rights investigation into the violence surrounding an aborted white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. Hours after a young man said to have white supremacist sympathies drove a car through a group of counterprotesters Saturday in the city’s downtown, killing a woman, Attorney General Jeff Sessions issued a late-night statement announcing that his department would open a federal investigation. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Police identified the woman killed by the car as Heather Heyer, 32, a paralegal in Charlottesville. Of 19 people injured in the incident, 10 are in good condition and nine were discharged,  a spokeswoman for UVA Health Systems said Sunday afternoon, ABC News reported. Two Virginia State Police pilots killed in a helicopter crash just outside the city as events unfolded were identified Saturday night … Read entire article »

GOP Lawmakers Ask Jeff Sessions to End Operation Choke Point

Five high-ranking House Republicans have asked formally that the Trump administration end Operation Choke Point, an Obama administration program that critics say unfairly targets politically unpopular industries such as firearms sellers and payday lenders. In a letter sent Thursday to Attorney General Jeff Sessions, the four lawmakers request that the Justice Department “repudiate” the program by the end of the month. “Operation Choke Point was an Obama administration initiative that destroyed legitimate businesses,” their letter says, adding: (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); We request that your respective departments and agencies issue clear and public formal policy statements repudiating Operation Choke Point and the abuses by financial regulators of the ‘reputation risk’ guidance they developed and promulgated under Operation Choke Point’s auspices. Yale Covers Up Gun in Stone Carving of Puritan, Indian

Yale University has covered up a musket on a stone carving depicting a hostile interaction between a Puritan settler and an American Indian, leaving the latter’s bow and arrow uncovered. Yale’s head librarian, Susan Gibbons, and the school’s Committee on Art in Public Spaces decided the carving’s presence at a reopened entrance to the school’s library was “not appropriate,” according to Yale Alumni Magazine. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Yale announced the decision Wednesday. Gibbons said the stone covering the musket could be removed without defacing the carving. Communistic Venezuela, Where Barack Obama and the Deep State Are Still Moving America!

Socialism in America Barack Obama and his Socialistic agenda are still active even after the defeat of Hillary Clinton. He has used the Socialistic arm of the American media in outlets like MSNBC and CNN to bring about change. The Obama administration spied on America citizens and unmasked American citizens just like any other Socialistic / Communistic leader would do. I never understood as the Obama administration would enact laws or executive orders that never made sense. This … Read entire article »

Sen. James Lankford Chides ABC News for Careless Use of ‘Hate Group’ Label

In a letter to the head of ABC News, a U.S. senator criticizes the news organization for carelessly editorializing by using the term “hate group” in a report about a prominent Christian legal organization. Sen. James Lankford, R-Okla., suggests to ABC News President James Goldston that an account by two of his reporters in fact unfairly maligned a “peaceful group,” whose recent conference was the venue for a speech on religious freedom by Attorney General Jeff Sessions. In his letter, dated Monday, Lankford asks Goldston: “Why would ABC News label a peaceful group as a ‘hate group’ simply because of a difference of opinion?” (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); The July 12 report by ABC News’ Pete Madden and Erin Galloway was about Sessions’ speech to Alliance Defending Freedom at its gathering in Orange County, … Read entire article »

We Hear You: Facing the Opioid Crisis and Defending the Marriage Views of Farmers

Editor’s note: We were pretty jazzed to publish a commentary on the opioid crisis by William Bennett and Robert DuPont. We’ve been meaning to run some of your reactions, so let’s begin with them, followed by more on the farmers banned from a farmers market . Be sure to write us at letters@dailysignal.com—Ken McIntyre Dear Daily Signal: The current panic over opioid drug abuse is just the latest hyped-up cause for the media (“Getting the Opioid Epidemic Right”). The only result is that people who legitimately need opioids for chronic, intractable pain have an increasingly difficult time getting doctors to prescribe those desperately needed medications. Doctors are told that their licenses may be in jeopardy if they prescribe opiates, so they are reluctant to do so. “Pain doctors” are being designated and onerous … Read entire article »

How Obamacare Is Eroding Private Insurance

The Senate has now failed to pass legislation to repeal and replace Obamacare. The longer Congress delays or avoids action, the more the problems are likely to grow and compound. The most common and publicized problems with the law have been the skyrocketing premiums and withdrawal of insurers from Obamacare exchanges—consequences that have flown in the face of Obamacare’s backers who said the reform would increase choice and lower costs. But the increasing cost of premiums has had additional repercussions. Larger numbers of middle-income Americans who aren’t eligible for subsidies are now struggling to pay for coverage or, as more insurers leave the market, unable to get coverage at all. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); So while programs for the poor, like Medicaid, continue to grow, the private market for middle-income Americans shrinks. ‘I Wouldn’t Pick on America’: The War on ISIS Gets Personal for the US Navy

USS GEORGE H.W. BUSH, Mediterranean Sea—The sound of aircraft launching off the flight deck rumble deep within the bowels of the aircraft carrier. Conversations in the officers’ mess room, where I’m having chicken cacciatore for lunch, dutifully pause while the jet engines above decks run up to full afterburner. Then, the walls and floor shudder when the steam-powered catapults launch the F/A-18 Hornet and Super Hornet strike fighters and the EA-18G Growler electronic warfare jets off the flight deck at an acceleration of zero to 184 miles per hour in just two seconds. Just by the sound of it, there’s no way of knowing if each successive launch is for combat or for training. But there’s a good chance the jet you hear is headed to war. ‘Dunkirk’ Shows Why Nationhood Really Matters

They were practically kids, and they were sitting ducks. In the summer of 1940, roughly 400,000 British troops stood stranded on a beach in Dunkirk, France, besieged by an advancing German army and targeted by a swarming German air force. They had been Western Europe’s best hope for liberation. Now, pushed to the edge of the continent, they stood awaiting their fate: a miraculous rescue, or death. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Few Americans are likely to have heard of Dunkirk in the year 2017. This early episode of World War II history had fallen into relative obscurity, overshadowed by the more celebrated Allied feats at Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge, the liberation of Paris, etc. But film director Christopher Nolan has now brought it roaring back to life in a vivid recreation on … Read entire article »

How the CBO Can Begin to Earn Back the Public’s Confidence

With the ongoing debate over health care reform, the Congressional Budget Office has drawn increased attention from across the political spectrum. in particular, many have begun to voice frustrations about the CBO’s practices to the point that eight past directors of the CBO penned a letter defending the institution. More recently, legislation has even been introduced to dismantle, or diminish, the CBO’s role. A lot of this frustration is likely to be painted as partisan, angry, or vengeful, but it is quite apparent the CBO could ease some of these frustrations by engaging in more open and transparent communication. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); The CBO has especially been a target of frustration due to its refusal to openly score health care legislation. In fact, current CBO Director Keith Hall acknowledged this was a problem … Read entire article »

Dodd-Frank Has Held Down the US Economy for Too Long

Carefree, Arizona—population 3,363—is 2,400 miles from Wall Street. But that’s still not far enough away to escape the harm caused by Democrats’ supposed “Wall Street reform” known as the Dodd-Frank Act, which was signed into law seven years ago this month. According to a local news report, a proposed housing project in Carefree was terminated because “the Dodd-Frank Act and its overreaching federal regulations” prevented the developer from obtaining financing. In truth, citizens of every American community are losing economic opportunities due to Dodd-Frank. According to the Mercatus Center, Dodd-Frank places greater burdens on our business enterprises than all other Obama-era regulations combined. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Arguably, it is the prime contributor to our economy’s halting growth since the last recession ended. It has been particularly harmful to small businesses. Even the former … Read entire article »

The Left Is a Greater Threat to America Than Putin

Last week, I tweeted, “The news media in the West pose a far greater danger to Western civilization than Russia does.” To my surprise, the tweet went viral. And while there were more likes than dislikes, 99 percent of the written reactions were negative. Typical reactions were: (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); –“F— you.” –“Move to Russia.” –“Your very full diapers pose a very great danger, please change them.” That received 1,880 likes. –“I’ve wiped s— off my shoes more trustworthy and patriotic than your sorry a–.” That received 606 likes. You get the idea. But it wasn’t the ad hominem insults that I found troubling. What was troubling was the low state of logical thinking that so many responses reflected. This was exemplified by their reminding me how important a free press is to democracy (as if attacking the … Read entire article »

How Character and Statecraft Shaped the Post-World War Order

Seventy-two years after the end of World War II, Prime Minister Winston Churchill’s leadership remains a shining example of statecraft for leaders in our own day. It is this great British figure that historian and public intellectual Lewis E. Lehrman writes about in his latest book, “Churchill, Roosevelt & Company: Studies in Character and Statecraft.” The book provides Lehrman’s readers with the fruit of a lifetime of deep scholarship. Many assume that American entry into World War II was inevitable. But in fact the U.S. only declared war on the Axis powers after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, which was well into the war. American entry into World War II was by no means a given. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); In his book, Lehrman reveals how Churchill skillfully and restlessly pursued American … Read entire article »

Harvard’s Proposed Policy Would Punish Students for Having Normal Social Lives

For the second time in less than two years, Harvard College Dean Rakesh Khurana is expanding paternalistic restrictions and sanctions on the student body based on whom they choose to be friends with. In an email to the student body on July 12, the dean reported that the “USGSO Committee”—which handles policy on “unrecognized single-gender social organizations,” and which the dean co-chairs—released preliminary recommendations to be reviewed by the faculty and then approved by Harvard University’s president, Drew Faust. These recommendations outline a new policy that exceeds the bounds of a prior, already overreaching policy, which will remain in place unless Faust approves the new policy. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); The first policy, begun in 2016, targeted all-male and all-female organizations, including fraternities, sororities, and final clubs, all of which are off-campus, self-funded, … Read entire article »
