The Myth That Climate Change Created Harvey, Irma

Flooding in homes and businesses across Houston was still on the rise when Politico ran a provocative article, titled “Harvey Is What Climate Change Looks Like.” Politico was not alone, as another news outlet called the one-two punch of Harvey and Irma the potential “new normal.” Brad Johnson, executive director of the advocacy group Climate Hawks Vote, says Harvey and Irma are reason to finally jail officials who “reject science.” Rather than focus on the victims and offer solutions for speedy recovery, pundits and politicians in the wake of Harvey focused on saying, “I told you so.” (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Climate disaster response rules 1) save lives 2) global warming is here 3) put officials who reject science in jail https://t.co/xLGt79yLOP — Brad Johnson (@climatebrad) September 7, 2017 Except they’re not telling the full story. Lawmaker Says Congress Will ‘Have to Be on Our Toes’ After Failing to Scrap $900 Million ‘Earmark’

After failing to stop what he called an “earmark,” one Republican lawmaker is preparing to fight the possible return of pork-barrel spending in Congress. Rep. Ted Budd worked to block $900 million in a transportation funding bill bound for an Amtrak project in New Jersey, saying the funding violated the House’s ban on earmarks. The North Carolina Republican’s amendment, which would have let other cities apply for the money, failed Wednesday in a House vote, 260-159.  (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); “I had a lot of my conservative colleagues say, ‘Thank you for being in the fight and being in the lead,’” Budd said. “And then I also had some from the New Jersey [and] New York delegation come up and slap me on the back and say, ‘I am going to get re-elected because I … Read entire article »

Freedom Imperiled in Hong Kong After Democracy Advocates Sent to Prison

Hong Kong’s freedom from Chinese meddling is quickly eroding. On Aug. 17, Joshua Wong, Nathan Law, and Alex Chow—the leaders of the “Umbrella Revolution” student movement, which demanded democracy in Hong Kong in 2014—were sentenced to six and eight months in prison by the Hong Kong Court of Appeal. Wong, Chow, and Law were involved in the Occupy movement that advocated democracy and sought the right for Hong Kong citizens to directly elect the chief executive—Hong Kong’s equivalent of a president. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Protests were mostly peaceful and predominately student-led. But as the face of democracy in Hong Kong, the Umbrella Movement was seen as a direct threat to Beijing. Just days prior to receiving their prison sentence, the Eastern Magistrates Court issued a sentence of community service and suspension for one … Read entire article »

Trump Is Right. ‘Our Tax Code Is a Giant, Self-Inflicted Economic Wound.’

In his second speech in two weeks on the need for tax reform, President Donald Trump again made a strong case, explaining that “our tax code is a giant, self-inflicted economic wound.” This time speaking in North Dakota, the president reiterated his four key goals for updating the broken U.S. tax system: a simplified tax code, a middle-class tax cut, a more competitive business environment, and the ability for business to bring home trillions of dollars of overseas profits. To this list of goals, I would also add full expensing as a critical reform. The president’s first goal is “a tax code that is simple, fair, and easy to understand.” (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); To meet this goal, tax reform must eliminate tax subsidies. The tax code should not be used to pick … Read entire article »

New Study Shows Political Unrest Often Starts With Lack of Upward Mobility

In countries with higher levels of economic freedom, individuals are free to move up (or down) the socio-economic ladder because of the decisions they make and the work that they do. They have what economists call social mobility. The freedom to earn income according to one’s talents and to own and control property are a big part of economic freedom and of social mobility. In more economically free societies, the socio-economic status a person has as a child need not determine that status as an adult. Not surprisingly, new research, published in the Journal of Conflict Resolution, affirms a relationship between social immobility and political unrest. Riots, strikes, anti-government demonstrations, political assassinations, guerrilla fighters, and revolutions and civil wars are more likely in countries lacking social mobility. Consumer Spending Update: Spending Stalls Despite Continued Confidence in Economy

CNN Documentary Gets Reagan’s Legacy Wrong

Is it possible to devote 90 minutes of prime TV time to Ronald Reagan as an actor who changed the presidency through his use of the mass media and still miss why he was a great communicator? CNN did it with its all too predictable documentary, “The Reagan Show.” The producers presented all the liberal clichés: Democratic Vice President Walter Mondale, declaring that Reagan was “out of touch, never in charge;” liberal arms controller Paul Warnke, dismissing SDI (the Strategic Defense Initiative) as “Star Wars;” ABC reporter Sam Donaldson, saying that Reagan lived in a “Norman Rockwell world;” TV anchors intoning in the wake of the Iran-Contra affair that Reagan “had a last chance to save his presidency.” (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); What the producers did not provide was even a minimum of … Read entire article »

Trump’s Budget Deal With Democrats Will Only Worsen Our Fiscal Situation

Late Wednesday night, the Senate released the text of legislation that would provide disaster relief funding and other federal aid for Hurricane Harvey and other 2017 disasters, suspend the debt limit, and extend the National Flood Insurance Program and government funding into December. The latest budget deal forged by President Donald Trump and key Senate Democrats is a failure on numerous levels. It takes advantage of a natural disaster to increase domestic spending and the federal debt limit—both of which are unrelated issues. It also fails to prioritize national defense spending and continues to spend money on inefficient and outdated domestic programs. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Congress should reject this deal and go back to the drawing board. One of the main reasons this package is being rushed through Congress is its promise of … Read entire article »

Trump Stumps for Simplifying Tax Code in North Dakota

President Donald Trump took his crusade for tax reform to North Dakota Wednesday. Though he said the tax reform plan will boost prosperity and make America more competitive during the remarks at the Andeavor Refinery in Mandan, North Dakota, Trump jokingly singled one industry that wouldn’t grow under a reformed and simpler tax code. “A staggering 94 percent of families need professional help to do their taxes, they have to get it, which is why the tax preparation industry generated $10 billion in revenues last year. That’s one business I want to drive down,” Trump said. “H&R Block will not be supporting Donald Trump.” (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); He said tax forms can run for 241 pages. But, under his plan, Trump claimed, 95 percent of taxpayers could file on a single page. “We’re … Read entire article »

President Deploys Ivanka as Emissary on Tax Reform

Congress should at least double the child tax credit, Ivanka Trump urged Tuesday, as the president’s daughter and key White House adviser stressed the administration’s commitment to tax reform this year. “We are keeping the administration’s working families agenda top of mind,” @IvankaTrump says. “This administration is determined to keep working families at the forefront of our agenda,” she said. “It is really important for the president and for the administration that this is really a tax cut for the middle class and for working families,” she told a morning gathering of pro-family groups at the Americans for Tax Reform headquarters in Washington. House Spending Bill Is Too Bloated. Congress Should Stick to the Budget Caps.

This week, the House of Representatives is expected to vote on the eight remaining annual appropriations bills. The House will combine the four-bill Make America Secure and Prosperous Appropriations Act (H.R. 3354), which was passed prior to August recess, with another “mini-bus” package. In total, the package would spend $1.132 trillion in fiscal year 2018, busting the Budget Control Act cap by $67 billion. Passing all 12 bills through the House is a positive step toward returning to … Read entire article »

Lawmaker Seeks to Derail $900M for Amtrak Project as Earmark

A North Carolina congressman is working to stop $900 million in a transportation funding bill bound for an Amtrak project in New Jersey that he says violates the House’s ban on earmarks. “We are in the era of no earmarks and we certainly see one, essentially a $900 million earmark … called the Gateway Project,” Rep. Ted Budd, R-N.C., told The Daily Signal in a phone interview. Black Leaders Should Focus on Lifting People Out of Poverty, Not Purging Statues

Many blacks and their white liberal allies demand the removal of statues of Confederate generals and the Confederate battle flag, and they are working up steam to destroy the images of Gens. Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee and President Jefferson Davis from Stone Mountain in Georgia. Allow me to speculate as to the whys of this statue removal craze, which we might call statucide. To understand it, we need a review of the promises black and white liberals have been making for decades. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); In 1940, the black poverty rate was 87 percent. By 1960, it had fallen to 47 percent. During that interval, blacks were politically impotent. There were no anti-poverty programs or affirmative action programs. Nonetheless, this poverty reduction exceeded that in any other 20-year interval. But the … Read entire article »

Trump Signals Willingness to Trade ‘Dreamers’ Amnesty for Merit-Based Immigration Reform

President Donald Trump signaled Tuesday that he may accept some sort of legal status for “Dreamers” enacted by Congress in return for lawmakers’ strengthening of immigration law, including merit-based reforms. “We will resolve the DACA issue with heart and compassion–but through the lawful Democratic process,” @POTUS says. In a statement issued after Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the gradual end of protections for so-called Dreamers, those brought illegally to the U.S. as children, Trump called for Congress to “advance responsible immigration reform that puts American jobs and American security first.” The president specifically mentioned a merit-based system for legal immigration and reforms to the issuing of green cards allowing immigrants to live and work here permanently. 3 Ways the US Tax Code Is Killing Our Economy’s Potential

President Donald Trump, Speaker Paul Ryan, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told the American people that if they gave Republicans the chance to govern, pro-growth tax reform would be their major legislative priority in 2017. Now that the voters have given Republicans control of the White House, House, and Senate, there is a real opportunity to achieve comprehensive, pro-growth tax reform. Today, America’s tax code is outdated, anti-growth, over-complicated, and full of corporate favoritism. We have an antiquated, Frankenstein’s monster of a tax code that doesn’t do any favors to the American taxpayer. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Its problems can be boiled down into the following three categories. Problem 1: Our Tax Code Is Not Pro-Growth Our current tax code suppresses business creation, expansion, and reinvestment thanks to high tax rates. The U.S. corporate … Read entire article »

This Ukrainian Regiment Began With Civilian Volunteers. Now It’s Going Pro.

URZUF, Ukraine—At the Azov Regiment’s base in this beach resort town on the Sea of Azov coast, you can sometimes hear the sounds of shelling from the front lines, which are about 42 miles east of here, toward the Russian border. Yet, on this blustery summer day in late August, tourists are out swimming on the public beach down below the military base—even though it’s a little cold out and there’s a war 45 minutes away by car. Even in war, after all, life goes on. Those intrepid tourists are enjoying the last few days of summer before students go back to school on Sept. 1. As summer fades to a close before the new school year, the war was also supposed to end on Sept. 1 as part of a “back … Read entire article »

Conservative Lawmakers: Hiking Debt Ceiling Is ‘Wasted Opportunity’ If Passed Without Reforms

With the Treasury set to be unable to continue borrowing more Sept. 29, due to the debt limit, conservative lawmakers are looking ahead to what they should do. “This is my third summer in Congress and it’s the same song and dance every year,” Rep. Mark Walker, chairman of the Republican Study Committee, a caucus of conservative lawmakers in the House of Representatives, told The Daily Signal in a phone interview. The debt limit, or debt ceiling, is how much the nation can borrow. Walker, a Republican from North Carolina, added: (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); We understand the ramifications of not raising the debt ceiling, but if we’re going to do that, then why not attach it to some long-term reforms? Iran Could Become Fiercer Adversary Than North Korea, Experts Say

In a decade, Iran could emerge as a major nuclear power—and an entirely legal one under the international nuclear agreement reached by the Obama administration, experts fear. “In about 10 years time, Iran will have, thanks to this deal, an industrial-sized nuclear program,” said Mark Dubowitz, CEO of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, during a Heritage Foundation forum Wednesday. “All they have to do is wait until the key restrictions on the deal sunset and they will emerge with a legal, internationally recognized, industrial-sized nuclear program.” (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Iran’s economy could also grow enough that it would be somewhat immunized from U.S. sanctions unless policy changes are made now. “If you like what North Korea is doing today, you’re going to love what Iran is going to be doing a few … Read entire article »

As Houston Reels From Harvey, Here’s Where Relief Funding Stands

As remnants of Hurricane Harvey move northeastward, the U.S. Gulf Coast continues to be drenched. Harvey, which made landfall last Friday night as a Category 4 storm, is the strongest hurricane to hit the U.S. in over a decade, with winds exceeding 130 mph in some areas. But beyond the extreme winds and storm surge, Harvey has crippled southeast Texas with widespread flooding. The storm stalled just south of Houston and is only now moving toward the northeast. Parts of Houston were hit with more than 40 inches of rain. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); As Harvey moves into Louisiana, more people will be displaced and will need rescuing. If you are in areas adjacent to those hardest hit, you may be in a unique position to help by providing shelter, offering your boat, or … Read entire article »
