Obamacare Insurer Lost $57.6 Million in First Half of 2017

Oscar Insurance Corp. is hemorrhaging money on the Obamacare state exchanges, posting a $57.6 million loss in the first half of 2017. Oscar is a health insurance startup that primarily sells Obamacare insurance plans, but the company has consistently had trouble making its business profitable. The company lost $57.6 million thus far in 2017 in Texas, New York, and California, down from an $83 million loss in the first half of 2016. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); To mitigate some of its 2016 losses, Oscar, like many other health insurance providers, reduced its exposure to the Obamacare state exchanges in 2017. The company raised premiums and lowered the number of doctors and hospitals within its network. Oscar does plan to expand offerings in more states in 2018, citing plans to enter the Ohio, New Jersey, … Read entire article »

Some Bad Ideas, Like Zombies, Never Seem to Die. A ‘No First Use’ Nuclear Policy Is One of Them.

Some argue that the United States should declare a “no first use” nuclear weapons policy. This would mean that the United States would only use a nuclear weapon in response to another country’s nuclear attack. Proponents of this idea generally argue that an adoption of this policy would get us closer to a world without nuclear weapons. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Such optimism couldn’t be further away from the truth. A no-first-use nuclear weapons policy would make the United States and allies less safe from devastating attacks. To assume that the only utility of nuclear weapons is to retaliate after a nuclear attack is to ignore historical experience. The United States used nuclear weapons in 1945 to bring an end to the most devastating conflict in the modern history of mankind. That conflict, World War II, … Read entire article »

Where Is the Corporate Disavowal of Black Lives Matter?

Liberal business executives are leaping like lemmings from President Donald Trump’s manufacturing advisory council. Good riddance. These silly string-spined CEOs have sided with social justice agitators, Beltway media enablers, and Democratic resistance knuckleheads who believe Trump was wrong to condemn violence and hatred on all sides of the political spectrum. Never mind that of the four people arrested after the violent outbreak in Charlottesville, Virginia, this weekend, two were identified with the white nationalist movement and the other two were left-wing “Antifa” counterprotesters. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); One of those radical leftists is the man identified as having reportedly punched a female reporter for the D.C.-based newspaper The Hill. But since that doesn’t fit the national media narrative of journalists allegedly being victimized by right-wing incitements to violence, mum’s the word from corporate media … Read entire article »

America Is Heading Straight Into Its Most Avoidable Crisis Ever

America Is Heading Straight Into Its Most Avoidable Crisis Ever

In the looming shadow of another debt limit debate, Congress should stand firm and demand spending controls before increasing the debt limit again. Most people are familiar with the tragic story of the Titanic. Like the iceberg that sank the grand ship, the United States is facing what is perhaps the largest and most avoidable crisis in its history—the U.S. federal debt. The crew of the Titanic chose to ignore warnings of the danger ahead. Congress must … Read entire article »

Secret Service might not buy spin for Missouri Dem’s Trump assassination ‘hope’

**Written by Doug Powers Democrat Missouri State Senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal caught the attention of the Secret Service this week: The US Secret Service is investigating comments made online by a Missouri state lawmaker who reportedly said she hoped President Donald Trump would be assassinated. Democratic State Sen. Maria Chappelle-Nadal’s comment has since been deleted — but it did not go unnoticed. “The St. Louis Field Office of the Secret Service is looking into the comments,” Secret Service spokesperson Cathy … Read entire article »

Obama Holdovers Still in Key National Security Council Jobs

Several Obama holdovers who led initiatives at odds with President Donald Trump’s foreign policy remain on the staff of national security adviser H.R. McMaster, The Daily Caller News Foundation Investigative Group has learned. About 40 of the National Security Council’s 250 officials—nearly 1 in 6—are Obama administration holdovers, according to The Daily Caller News Foundation’s analysis. The holdovers include council directors for Korea, China, Iran, Pakistan, Egypt, Eastern Europe, Israel-Palestine, South America, North Africa, and sub-Saharan Africa. Holdovers also advise on weapons of mass destruction, counterterrorism, nonproliferation, arms control, defense policy, immigration, and homeland preparedness. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); It’s been common practice in previous administrations to retain holdovers from an outgoing administration, and nearly all are on loan from other federal agencies. But current and former administration officials say they are concerned … Read entire article »

How Trump Can Avoid Getting Bogged Down While Draining the Swamp

Military veterans, trying to get medical care or other services, face a maze of subagencies in the Department of Veterans Affairs. And that’s just one of many reasons for making the federal government more efficient, policy experts say. “The VA has 42 different offices, including 14 specifically related to health,” said Rachel Greszler, research fellow in economics, budget, and entitlements with The Heritage Foundation. “These things just create a bureaucratic nightmare for veterans who are seeking integrated services, one stop to go to for all of their needs as opposed to 42 different offices, [and the veteran] responsible for taking documentation from one to another,” Greszler added Tuesday during a panel discussion at the think tank’s Capitol Hill headquarters. Al Gore’s Carbon Footprint Hypocrisy

Al Gore’s carbon footprint is the size of Godzilla’s, but to hear the liberal New Republic magazine’s Emily Atkin tell it, it really “doesn’t matter.” But it doesn’t really matter only if “do as I say, not as I do” has become the credo of Gore and his fellow climate change alarmists. The size of Gore’s carbon footprint has become an issue with the Aug. 4 theatrical release of “An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power,” the follow-up to “An Inconvenient Truth,” his 2006 global warming horror film. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Inconveniently for Gore, the sequel is bombing at the box office after receiving mixed reviews from film critics and moviegoers alike. The new film has grossed a meager $2.3 million domestically as of Aug. 13, according to Boxofficemojo.com. As the foremost Chicken Little … Read entire article »

Down Syndrome in Iceland Is ‘Disappearing’ Because of Abortion

The headline is shocking: Down syndrome is virtually disappearing in Iceland. More accurately, people with Down syndrome are being eliminated in Iceland through abortion. As prenatal testing becomes more and more widespread across the world, the number of babies born with Down syndrome and other conditions has decreased because when parents opt for screening that reveals an abnormality, many opt to end the pregnancy. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Down syndrome happens when a person has an extra chromosome, which alters development, physical traits, and increases the risk for medical conditions like heart defects and hearing problems. Life expectancy for a person with Down syndrome was only 25 years old in 1983. But now, just a few decades later, life expectancy has dramatically increased to 60 years old. The National Down Syndrome Society points out that … Read entire article »

The 3-Step Argument the Left Makes to Justify Violence Against Conservative Speakers

Ben Shapiro delivered the remarks below during a hearing July 27 on the issue of free speech on college campuses.  Free speech is under assault because of a three-step argument made by the advocates and justifiers of violence. The first step is they say that the validity or invalidity of an argument can be judged solely by the ethnic, sexual, racial, or cultural identity of the person making the argument. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); The second step is that they claim those who say otherwise are engaging in what they call “verbal violence,” and the final step is they conclude that physical violence is sometimes justified in order to stop such verbal violence. So let’s examine each of these three steps in turn. First, the philosophy of intersectionality. This philosophy now dominates college campuses … Read entire article »

Mob Rule Prevails in Toppling of Confederate Statue

Following the ugly incident that took place in Charlottesville, Virginia, this past weekend, an unruly mob took out its anger on a century-old statue in North Carolina. It is a perfect example of how tribal and identity politics are raging out of control in America, and how radicals will continue to ratchet up their tactics to match one another. While the media spent its time connecting riots to the political right, the hard left continued to step up its tactics to promote social discord, as it has been doing for years. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); On Monday afternoon, a crowd of people in an “Emergency Durham Protest” marched down Durham’s Main Street, then made its way to the Durham County Courthouse. Lib journos storm beaches of idiocy

**Written by Doug Powers Just seven months into the Trump presidency and the liberal media have already reached the summit of Mt. Lunacy: Journalists and major liberal news outlets have compared violent American flag-burning protesters to soldiers storming the beaches of Normandy — all while downplaying the leftists’ violence. The protesters, known as antifa (short for anti-fascist), often advocate for communism and have been deemed a domestic terrorist movement by New Jersey. Despite the Left’s Intolerance, I Will Conduct an Orchestra

I am writing this column to inform readers of some good news. The sustained efforts of individuals, organizations, and the media who oppose everything people like me stand for—America as an exceptional nation among the nations of the world; the unique contribution of the Judeo-Christian value system in shaping America and the best of Western civilization; sustaining Western civilization as a moral imperative; preserving the American Trinity of liberty, In God We Trust, and e pluribus unum; promulgating the American and Judeo-Christian belief that race is insignificant; and an openness to all points of view—to shut down my conducting appearance with the Santa Monica Symphony Orchestra at the Walt Disney Concert Hall Wednesday night have failed. As of this writing, besides two rows, the 2,265-seat hall is sold out. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || … Read entire article »

Farmer Faces Multimillion-Dollar Fine for Plowing Fields Without Government’s Permission

This week, a federal judge will determine whether to levy a multimillion-dollar fine against John Duarte, as requested by the Department of Justice. Duarte’s wrongdoing? Plowing fields without first asking the permission of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. In 2012, Duarte—a fourth-generation California farmer and owner of a large agricultural nursery—began plowing 450 acres of property in order to plant winter wheat. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); This typical farming practice soon caught the attention of a local Corps project manager, who was horrified to see that the plowed land contained a smattering of vernal pools. These generally dry, shallow land depressions temporarily collect excess rainwater, which quickly evaporates. Depending on weather variations, they may not fill with water at all. The Corps claimed the authority to regulate these pools as “wetlands” under the Clean … Read entire article »

James Damore: ‘Certain Dogmas You Can’t Dissent Against at Google’

Google officials did not tell him what was incorrect in his research-based observations about men and women before firing him, software engineer James Damore said in an interview Monday night on Fox News Channel. Instead, Damore told Tucker Carlson, colleagues tried to “shame” him amid “huge, emotional outrage” rather than discuss the 10-page memo he wrote about challenges to the information giant’s diversity goals. The reason for his termination last week, he was told, was his “perpetuating gender stereotypes.” “There’s certain dogmas that you really can’t dissent against at Google, and one of them being that there’s any difference between people,” the soft-spoken former Google employee said. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Watch the video to find out why Damore, 28, says he wasn’t completely surprised by the reaction to his “trying to actually … Read entire article »

Senate Democrats Are Trying to Undermine Trump’s Ability to Govern

Before leaving for its summer break, the U.S. Senate confirmed 67 of President Donald Trump’s nominees to positions in 12 different executive branch departments and agencies. These include deputy, under, and assistant secretaries, as well as administrators, commissioners, general counsels, and ambassadors. Unfortunately, this was merely a temporary respite in the confirmation war. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); The Constitution gives the president authority to nominate those he wants to lead the various components of the executive branch. The Constitution also gives the Senate the power of advice and consent as a check, or a condition, on the president’s power to appoint those leaders. This separation of powers once shaped the confirmation process. The Senate has, by either confirmation vote or filibuster, defeated only six of the thousands of executive branch nominees it has ever considered. … Read entire article »
