New York City Mayor Eric Adams has thrown in the towel and lost hope, as his “sanctuary city” can no longer endure the effects of the massive influx of illegal aliens that he declares will destroy the city.
Adams made his dire prediction at a town hall meeting on Wednesday, according to Fox News, stating:
“Let me tell you something, New Yorkers. Never in my life have I had a problem that I did not see an ending to. I don’t see an ending to this. I don’t see an ending to this. This issue will destroy New York City. Destroy New York City. We’re getting 10,000 migrants a month.”
“We had a $12 billion deficit that we’re going to have to cut. Every service in this city is going to be impacted. All of us,” Adams said. “It’s going to come to your neighborhoods. All of us are going to be impacted by this. I said it last year when we had 15,000. I’m telling you now with 110,000. The city we knew we’re about to lose. And we’re all in this together.”
Apparently, the reality of the Biden administration’s failed border policies can no longer be denied by Democrat-run sanctuary cities. Nearly two million encounters have been recorded at the southern border this year, with Texas Governor Greg Abbott busing 35,000 illegals to so-called sanctuary cities, including over 12,000 to New York City since August 2022.
Adams has been quite critical of President Biden for several months over the growing illegal immigrant crisis. He called out the President last April, as reported by The New York Times:
“The president and the White House have failed New York City on this issue. This is one of the largest humanitarian crises that this city has ever experienced. It will impact every service in the city,” Mr. Adams said. “Why isn’t every elected official in Washington, D.C., asking the national government, ‘why are you doing this to New York?’”
Last week Adams sought help from New York Governor Kathy Hochul to handle the so-called asylum seekers. According to CBS News, Adams stated, “Any plan that states that all migrants must stay in New York City, that’s a failed plan. Any plan that does not include stopping the flow at the border is a failed plan.”
Hochul apparently doesn’t want asylum seekers outside of New York City. “We cannot and will not force other parts of our state to shelter migrants,” she said.
Adams pointed his finger elsewhere on Wednesday. “What happened? It started with a madman down in Texas, decided he wanted to bus people up to New York City.”
In a statement to Fox News Digital on Thursday, Gov. Abbott’s press secretary, Andrew Mahaleris, reacted to Adams’ criticism:
“The hypocrisy of Mayor Adams is astounding. Mayor Adams was proud to tout his self-described sanctuary city status until Texas began busing migrants to New York City to provide relief to our overrun and overwhelmed border communities,” Mahaleris said by email Thursday. “With millions of residents, New York is only dealing with a fraction of what our small border communities deal with on a day-to-day basis. Instead of complaining about 13,000 migrants sent from Texas, Mayor Adams should be calling out his party leader, President Biden, who has been flying planeloads of migrants all around the country and oftentimes in the cover of night, straining state and local resources across the country. Until President Biden steps up and does his job, Texas will continue busing migrants to sanctuary cities to provide relief to our overwhelmed border towns.
The illegal migrants in New York City haven’t gone unnoticed by residents, who are done with the government-caused crisis. The New York Post reported that a “Siena College survey found that 82% of voters said the surge of migrants to the Big Apple and the rest of the Empire State is a serious problem — with 54% of respondents saying it’s a ‘very serious’ problem.”
Even House Speaker Kevin McCarthy took notice of Adams’ frustration this week, noting that “liberal Democrats are finally coming to terms with the reality that the Biden Border Crisis is hurting the country.”
He continued:
While New York Democrats complain that it’s unfair for Biden’s open-border crisis to be New York’s problem, they’ve taken no action to actually solve the crisis. Every single congressional Democrat voted against H.R. 2, the Secure the Border Act. If enacted into law, this border security bill would immediately restart construction on the wall and hire more border patrol agents to stop the flow that has created the crisis throughout the country….
Mayor Adams is right: “New York City deserves better.” It’s time for New York’s very own Senator [Charles] Schumer and his Senate Democrats to pass the Secure the Border Act to end this Biden-created crisis.
