Anthony Edwards of the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves has been the subject of online criticism since Monday, when Instagram model Paige Jordae shared screenshots of text messages revealing that Edwards told her to abort their child and said she felt “lied to and manipulated.”
According to the messages, Edwards told Jordae to “get a[n] abortion lol.” In response, Jordae shared, “Honestly I had an abortion with my son around 2 years ago and I regret it everyday.”
Edwards, however, continued insisting that she abort their child. “Man you can’t force a kid in da world,” he said. “I don’t want a kid.”
When his appeals didn’t work, Edwards tried a new strategy: He offered the mother of his child $100,000 to take the abortion pill, as long as she sent a video recording of her taking it as proof. Jordae gave in and chose to have the abortion.
Many condemned Edwards while others criticized Jordae for exposing him, including ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith. “She put him on blast,” Smith ranted. “She took text messages and revealed them to the public…. If [Edwards] wanted to have an abortion, respectfully, that’s his business.”

In response to the criticism, Edwards posted an apology to X:
I made comments in the heat of a moment that are not me, and that are not aligned with what I believe and who I want to be as a man. All women should be supported and empowered to make their own decisions about their bodies and what is best for them. I am handling my personal matters privately and will not be commenting on them any further at this time.
Edwards claims to have made the decision in the “heat of a moment,” but he fails to acknowledge that he repeatedly attempted to get Jordae to have an abortion over the course of multiple days — and ignores that Jordae is now dealing with the painful regret of two abortions.
Her regret is not uncommon. Neither is her coerced abortion. As one study showed, “Close to 70 percent of women who acknowledged having had abortions described them as coerced, pressured, or inconsistent with their own values and preferences.”
Just a week before Jordae’s reveal, Edward’s longtime girlfriend, Jeanine Robel, shared a pregnancy announcement on Instagram. Assuming Edwards is the father, he now has two children: one for whom he and Robel are happily preparing, and one whose death Edwards helped ensure.
