Hunter Biden did not attend a closed-door deposition at 9:30 this morning that he was subpoenaed for last month. He offered to instead testify publicly, but that request was denied by GOP lawmakers.

Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.) responded to the request, saying, “Hunter Biden is trying to play by his own rules instead of following the rules required of everyone else. That won’t stand with House Republicans.” Other lawmakers cited concerns of Biden turning the hearing into a spectacle.

Last week Comer and Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) threatened contempt proceedings if Biden refused to appear for the deposition, saying, “Contrary to the assertions in your letter, there is no ‘choice’ for Mr. Biden to make.”

Outside the Capitol, after he was scheduled to appear for the deposition, Biden read a statement to reporters, saying, “Let me state as clearly as I can. My father was not financially involved in my business, not as a practicing lawyer, not as a board member of Burisma, not my partnership with a Chinese private businessman, not in my investments at home nor abroad, and certainly not as an artist.”
