Alec Baldwin was indicted by a grand jury in New Mexico today for a fatal shooting on a movie set in 2021. Halyna Hutchins, a cinematographer, was shot and killed by Alec Baldwin when he allegedly negligently discharged a firearm being used in the film. Baldwin allegedly pulled the hammer back on a revolver and pulled the trigger, discharging the firearm while pointed at Hutchins’ chest, killing her and injuring Director Joel Souza.

The firearm used in the shooting was a Pietta revolver chambered in .45 Long Colt and was loaded with live ammunition. In lieu of a non-firing replica or a inert prop firearm, movie productions will use firearms loaded with blank cartridges for use on sets. However, in this incident, live ammunition was in use on the set.

First assistant director David Halls handed Baldwin the loaded firearm, and was charged with negligent use of a deadly weapon. Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer sentenced Halls to six months of unsupervised probation after he pleaded no contest. During the sentencing Halls was ordered to testify in all hearings involving the shooting, attend a firearms safety course, perform 24 hours of community service, and pay a $500 fine.

Key assistant and armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter and one charge of tampering with evidence after transferring cocaine to another person on set during the police investigation.
