Several Iranian military leaders were killed today in an Israeli airstrike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria. Reuters reported that Revolutionary Guards Corps Commander Mohammad Reza Zahedi was killed in the strike, and Iran International reported that Generals Muhammad Haji-Rahimi and Hossein Amirollah were also confirmed dead.

Several diplomats were also allegedly killed. Iran’s Tasnim News agency reported, “Some sources say that between 5 and 7 people were martyred in the attack. However, no official statistics on the damage and casualties of the attack have yet been released.”

According to SANA, the Syrian Arab News Agency, Syrian diplomat Faisal Mekdad stated, “Mikdad: We strongly condemn this heinous terrorist aggression that targeted the Iranian consulate building in Damascus and caused the martyrdom of several innocent people.”

The Jerusalem Post reported the response of the Iranian embassy in Lebanon to the strike: “This barbaric Israeli aggression is a flagrant violation of international laws, diplomatic norms, and the requirements of the Vienna Convention.”
