hey welcome to Crossroads there’s a new trade War Brewing over green energy of all things and despite the United States financing subsidizing and pushing the new green energy markets the Biden Administration is now going after the Chinese Communist party with tariffs and other tr types of trade punishments on things related to for example electric vehicle batteries and on solar panels now at the surface a lot of this may seem counter in intuitive but it’s actually related to something else the Chinese Communist party is trying to dominate the global energy Market using green energy and this is becoming an increasing concern among the United States and among the B Administration here to talk to us about this is Victoria coat she’s the former deputy National Security adviser to president Trump and vice president of National Security and foreign policy at the Heritage Foundation hey Victoria coat thanks for being here thank you for having me so Heritage Foundation just did a big report pointing to the Chinese Communist Party building a system of control over the green energy market and you know this is interesting timing because Biden is going after the Chinese Communist party on electric vehicles he’s going after them on solar panels and you know on the surface this seems counterintuitive because he’s pushing so hard with the green agenda you’d think that other count countries building you know Green Energy Products you’d think they’d like it so like what’s really going on here what’s really happening with all this well it’s it’s fascinating to see this shift in that uh the Biden Administration came in with the most Progressive the most radical green agenda in history and a sense of mandate from the American people uh to impose a a remarkable so-called energy transition which would Mark the first time in human history we would go from more dense more plentiful more reasonably priced energy to less dense less plentiful more much more expensive energy by choice this has never happened before and this is what they proposed and they have over the first three and a half years uh called climate change the existential threat facing the United States and the premise of Chinese handcuffs of the of the report is that what that has permitted is the uh so the United States falling into the communist China uh Chinese trap of dependency on China for cheap uh green energy infrastructure and so so that’s really what the the report details is the campaign basically the 5G Playbook uh that China got out and dusted off and applied to Green infrastructure to try to make the United States dependent on them for energy well and this ties into something important that I want to go into it at a couple different angles one is the Strategic importance of energy because you know when we think of war and we think of diplomacy normally countries dominating other countries maybe they can do it through narratives or diplomatic means maybe they can do it through military power but they can also do it through the control of energy or the control of essential Goods uh I know with Russia for example that was one of Trump’s big warnings to Europe was telling you know Germany and such hey if you guys don’t start some kind of domestic energy production your energy infrastructure is going to be controlled by Russia and they literally laughed at Trump and you know lo and behold here we are but as we’ve kind of gone towards the green energy Market it seems that the CCP is starting to take over that does that mean the CCP is going to control Global energy if you know the whole world tries to transition to it I mean can can you explain this kind of power Dynamic when comes to energy yeah it’s it’s really it’s a new phenomenon in many ways uh really for the last 150 years we’ve seen an exponential growth in humans need for energy and that is only going to increase in coming years I mean the sum of the estimates I’ve seen is that the AI the data processing centers even Bitcoin are going to place so many more demands on our energy infrastructure it could go up by 25% in five years which is just a huge increase uh in the United States so the need for energy to fuel Modern Life is something that touches each and every American and what we have also witnessed over the last 15 years is the uh establishment of American Energy dominance we have historically been an energy vulnerable consuming Nation uh but that has changed with the fracking uh Revolution with the uh exploitation of us natural gas uh resources this is something that’s become a great strength rather than a weakness for the United States and I think right around that 15-year time frame was when China who’s the world’s largest importing Nation took a look at that and said Gee we really don’t like the United States being one of the three big producers uh that we would be dependent upon for the uh supplies that we need how do we change this and I think at that point they really focused in on what was the Obama era green agenda which looks tame by comparison to what the Biden Administration has done and tried figure out how they could use their wealth their state-owned entities uh to create heavily subsidized uh infrastructure everything from EV batteries to solar PL panels to wind turbines that would flood the international market put American and European Allied companies out of business and create a dependency on them it’s really quite genius if you think about it well and this is an important point with how the CCP does business is because a lot of their business business are statun they don’t need to make a profit at least not initially and so what they often do is they go into countries they under bid on every project uh sometimes even below cost they put the domestic companies out of business and then they basically control the market do you see them doing that with energy right now 100% that’s absolutely what they’re doing we’ve saw them do it with telecommunications they tried to do it during the pandemic with uh PPE so they they control these vital resources and for them that that is an investment in their projection of power it’s not a free free capitalist Society by or system rather by any stretch of the imagination but that’s that’s how they are they are trying to ex exert control really globally and I think as you know as the report reveals you know the the amazing part of this is that up until now the West has largely been doing this voluntarily uh if you think about the end of World War II for example I mean Wars are lost over dependency on energy supplies you can have all the best tanks and planes in the world but if you can’t move them around you’re you’re going to lose and that’s what both Germany and and Imperial Japan discovered and our second pillar our second chapter of Chinese handcuffs is on that specifically is on the military dimension of this and you know what it is stunning uh vulnerability the United States would impose upon itself if we were to adopt uh the kinds of radical policies the Biden Administration is imposing on our Department of Defense for example you know trying to run an Army on electric vehicles it’s just not going to work uh and it would mean we will be militarily enormously vulnerable to China well I I remember seeing reports they they even want like electric tanks aside from whether that’s even possible a big question was brought up was like well what happens if our milit becomes dependent on China you know is is that where we’re heading with this what do you say yeah I mean God forbid if you know the The Dodd discovers they can’t manufacture enough electric vehicle batteries at at scale and at cost that they have to buy them from China you could wind up in the crazy situation where China has a kill switch on the American Military so if they want to shut all those batteries down simultaneously we have that technology everybody who is OnStar knows it that that if your car is stolen OnStar has the cap capability to shut it down so that’s not you know radical secret technology and China could be building that into each and every EV battery uh which is why you know we at Heritage are looking at supporting legislation for the Chinese handcuffs report uh it to ban components of EV batteries from China because that’s the sort of Insidious back door for all of this is if you don’t want to buy a Chinese uh electric vehicle maybe you buy buy one from Mexico but maybe all of the components for that battery have been imported from China so China actually does have that back door uh that backdoor access to us vehicles and you know it’s it’s just it’s a terrible terrible idea well that actually gets into something really important that I think gets overlooked in a lot of the surface discussions is the possibility of having having back doors within systems you know I I actually worked uh on the cyber security beat for several years at The Epic Times and one thing we learned you know of course just reporting the news a lot of Chinese manufactured Electronics you know smartphones laptops everything even like USB drives they have sometimes vulnerabilities built into the firmware and so it’s not on the surface level but it’s at the chip level and one of the things is allows for is backdoor access to systems and one of the concerns was that aside even from that uh some security analysists some security analysts were saying it looks like the CCP sometimes will intentionally leave vulnerabilities in the system and sometimes the kill switch can look like that um imagine for example if you had you know as you were mentioning EV batteries electric vehicle batteries and there’s a loophole in the back end maybe a cyber security vulnerability that’s intentionally there and they can hack it to overload the system and like you know destroy the battery uh and this is not far-fetched even at cyber security conferences there have been hackers who’ve demonstrated the ability to hack laptops and actually explode the batteries um you know I know this gets into kind of the National Security level of this which I think you talk about in the report you know how serious is the national security threat then if we become dependent one on Chinese energy and two even if our military and key infrastructure become dependent on the CCP no it’s it’s it’s a massive vulnerability and I think you’ve really put your finger on it with the uh the Cyber Dimension to this which the Chinese have exploited to literally weaponize everything and I don’t I don’t want to be alarmist in all of this but they’re turning everything into into a an attack on the United States and so the apps that people are downloading on their phones uh Tik Tock being the most famous now at least in the Chinese language applications of them seem to have that kind of as you say builtin vulnerability that they can’t be encrypted so what that allows them to do is Hoover up all the data on your phone uh they can tell you know the websites you go to there’s enormous uh Financial vulnerability to it and they can even track your keystrokes so they’re collecting information then on each and every user uh of these of these apps and so for Tik Tok it’s terrifying because it’s hundreds of millions of people Americans uh who are are using that app and are are having their data collected you know and and so so I think we have to look at this holistically and while you know a solar panel might seem like a benign thing uh that everybody wants solar energy people like the idea of Renewables you know that’s nice but not if it’s being controlled by Beijing
