A lot! A casual check through the Old and New Testaments will reveal that nearly every major biblical figure, whether prophet, king, or apostle of God—and including Jesus Himself—was involved in either criticizing or counseling one or more political rulers.
So, why do so many churches shy away from bringing up political or social issues, whether in the pulpit or at small group studies, even though the Scriptures don’t support such positions? Why are those congregants who dare to question these policies ignored, silenced, or shunned? And what effect is this having in our fractured culture today?
As Breck Wheelock wrote in his new book, Be Strong in the Lord—a Tactical Guide to Spiritual Warfare, “Always remember, never forget that you are in a war. Every generation of Christians will be tested to see whether they will take care to walk in the way of the Lord, … to be diligent to obey all that HE commands.”
In Judges 3:1-2, we’re told that God left evil nations in the Promised Land… “to test Israel by them, that is, all in Israel who had no experience of any war in Canaan.” Why? “It was so that the generations of the people of Israel might know war, that HE might teach war to those who had not known it before.
Breck continues, “It is a fatal mistake to forget that we are in a war, for our enemy never forgets. And there are too many oblivious Christians walking about on the battlefield completely unaware of what is going on around them. Do not be one of them.”
“This war shall rage until the very last moment of the very last day when Christ returns on his War Horse… To slay his remaining enemies with the sword that comes from HIS mouth [the Word of God, the Word of Truth].”
(Revelation 19:11-12)
When God’s People Are Silent
Politics is simply “the religion of a nation in action.” In this nation “of, by, and for the people,” we are responsible to choose those who will govern us by the “Law of the Land”—our Constitution. We have no king or supreme council of men, which means we are not to allow evil men to do evil things without consequence. Our country was founded on the principle of Lex Rex—the “Law is King”—not on the so-called “Divine Right of Kings” of nations in the past.
If evil reigns in our three branches of government, it will surely flow downstream into all areas of our culture. And this will be the result of lukewarm Christians—who have been entrusted to be the stewards of the Word of God—neglecting our duty to hold society accountable to His standards. At this nation’s founding, it was a fundamental principle that the Christians were to battle evil ideas “that come against the knowledge of God” (2 Cor. 10:4-5). This precept is one of the main reasons for America’s very existence. We led the nation in education, commerce, politics, innovation and arts, because we set such a high bar of righteousness that has held up for over three centuries.
We’re collapsing today because several decades ago the churches stopped doing our duty to speak up against evil while promoting virtue. All because our pastors allowed an invisible, unscriptural dividing line to be placed between God’s Law-Word and “politics.”
Freedom Isn’t Free!
Prior to America, there was never a country in all of history where the rulers were made to be governed by the people of that country, and the result had been 5,000 years of tyranny, oppression, and slavery. This liberty was purchased and has been preserved at the cost of hundreds of thousands of the lives of everyday people who believed that freedom was worth living – and dying – for.
But in today’s culture, these ideas have been erased from history. Our pulpits and universities – which were once the epicenters for teaching Biblical applications of Scripture to all of life – rarely mention the words duty or responsibility in the context of our privileged role to protect and preserve the precious values our nation was founded upon.
It is the high calling of Christians to be Salt and Light in a dark and decaying world, to warn and to influence the world for good. When the truth is withheld or suppressed, though, all of society suffers. Christians have in our hands the Word of Truth. It is meant to be applied everywhere and when it is, all society prospers. That’s a fact.
We can turn this sinking ship around by simply stepping onto the battlefield armed with the Truth of Scripture, teaching one another to discern good ideas from the bad, placing the Bible as our inerrant standard of righteousness.
GTImin.com has produced a short 50-page booklet on The Christian Worldview of Politics which can give you a head start in this war we’re in. The booklet answers many of the questions Christians have been increasingly concerned with over the last decade—questions that can only be answered by the Scriptures themselves, not by the opinions or traditions of “experts” who are unquestioningly following what they have been taught by others—passing on as doctrine the commandments of men (Matt. 15:9). If you would like to provide multiple copies of this timely and impactful resource for your church or friends, check the special prices below.
