[Music] welcome to Crossroads China has become one of the main sources for the world’s solar panels and wind turbines but as the CCP pushes this whole green image as it’s you know new international brand internally the regime has actually been moving towards coal and nuclear power so why is the Chinese Communist Party pushing one agenda outside of China yet a very different one internally well let’s first have a look at the surface picture you know what you’d see if you’re just looking at the global market and what the news headlines are saying here’s what Chinese State influenced media South China Morning Post had to say about this they said that China’s solar and wind energy sector will continue to grow at break neck speed this year providing the momentum the country needs to meet its 2030 renewable targets 6 years ahead of schedule a according to a state-owned re researchers forecast now briefly the data does not align with this but I’ll get into that in a minute let me show you first what New York Times is saying they say for decades China has moved methodically to dominate ever more industries from toys and clothing in the 1980s to semiconductors and renewable energy today and they say that China now produces a third of the world’s manufactured goods more than the United States Germany Japan South Korea and Britain combined and they add that its Trade Surplus in these Goods is equal to a tenth of the entire Chinese economy and those exports keep increasing causing alarm about China’s manufacturing overcapacity a big buzzword going around among its biggest trading partners and they know the top leaders in the United States and Europe have begun calling on China to dial back how much it sells to the world and to increase its import and further in the note that Keel Institute for the world economy in in Keel Germany calculated in a study that more than 99% of Chinese companies whose stock traded publicly received direct government subsidies in 2022 and that’s going to be something important now look a big part of the industry in China comes from a program they had called China 2025 and before that the CCP had another project called project 863 now aside from the vague sounding names these were basically CCP economic programs meant to surpass you at the Turning Point as they said meaning rather than trying to compete with an existing markets you’re not trying to build the competing iPhone for example you’re not trying to be build a competing MacBook Pro you’re instead looking at the trend of world where the world is heading in terms of the Next Generation products and so the CCP aimed to take on those things at the Turning Point green energy semiconductors new materials Medical Products the area they they believed the world was heading into artificial intelligence and so on right they were basically getting plans to get the CCP out of cheap manufacturing they don’t want to be the cheap manufacturing Hub of the entire world and to instead get into the high-tech Industries and make the rest of the world the cheap manufacturing hubs well look the big problem with both of those programs China 2025 and project 863 is that they were supported heavily with government subsidies again even New York Times mentioned about 99% of the publicly traded companies rely heavily on government subsidies and the CCP also used this you know economic theft and so on to feed into these they were using cyber attacks to steal plans from public companies in the US and Europe and elsewhere and then basically copy them in China sell them at a cheaper price the CCP stealing the knowhow from other countries and now the CCP has products to compete in these industries well it has other unfair trading practices that are driving other countries to put tariffs on these Goods other countries are concerned about it the CCB is trying to undercut them in the markets using slave labor using ridiculous working hours using low wages in some areas using economic theft using government subsidies and no free country can compete with that and because of this of course you’re getting to the tariffs you’re getting into the trade Wars you’re getting into some of the issues like bans on Key Parts to Chinese high-tech manufacturing like semiconductor banss for example now with that said the Chinese Communist part is making a huge push for renewable energy because again that was one of the turning points that they for saw in the future that the World Market at least was going to head towards renewable energy the CCP got ahead of the curve and they had everything in place to take over that market but a lot of this is abroad they’re looking to Corner the market globally but since the Chinese Communist party again is using unfair trading practices again things like State subsidized products that other countries cannot compete with you know when it comes to pricing and since the Chinese Communist Party controls much of the global market for things like Rare Earth minerals needed to build these things well other countries are starting to take a stand they’re realizing the United States Germany the EU itself these countries are realizing that if the Chinese Communist Party continues doing this while the domestic companies the US manufacturers and others they will very likely go out of business and not only will that give the Chinese Communist Party a monopoly like on things like you know electric vehicles and solar panels and wind farms but it will also give the Chinese Communist Party Global control of the energy market and remember how important that is you know control the energy of a Nation you can have a strong amount of control over the whole country if you control the light switch remember a few years ago that was one of the concerns with Russia gaining energy dominance over Europe once a monopoly gets formed they can use it for other things it’s hard for countes to get out of it and if you become dependent on another country to keep your electricity running well they can use that as something to hang over your head for diplomacy and other types of things to make sure you stay in line with what they want now it was in this context the Europe put tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles here’s what France 24 had to say about this just recently they said that the EU the European Union has long talked about unfair trade competition from China after a 9month probe they investigated it Brussels the capital of the European Union announced additional tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles as establishing that those cars have benefited heavily from get it here unfair subsidies which they say pose a threat to electric vehicle producers in Europe the local companies cannot compete with it because the CCP doesn’t even need to make a profit it’s subsidized by the state they can bid below cost so they note that Beijing has accused the EU of naked protectionism which it said will harm relations and undermine Global efforts to on climate change it says and they know that seeking to drisk from China the new buzzword going around drisk meaning you’re pulling business out of China they say the EU is focused on boosting its own Auto Industries as it transitions to Greener energies now just a couple months ago in May President Joe Biden in the US took similar moves against the Chinese Communist party so it’s not just the EU it’s also the US and he did it for similar reasons as the European Union this is what CNBC had to say at the time they said the bid Administration announced stiff new tariff uh tariff rates Tuesday on $18 billion dollar worth of Chinese Imports the White House said the Tariff hikes were necessary to protect American Industries from what unfair competition they know that starting this year President Joe Biden will quadruple tariffs on imported Chinese electric vehicles from 25% to 100% 100% tariffs folks they not that the import tax on Chinese solar cells will double from 25% to 50% and tariffs on some of the Chinese steel and aluminum Imports will increase more than threefold from 7.5 today to up to 25% they note as well that the President also directed us trade representative Katherine Tai uh to more than triple the Tariff rates on lithium ion batteries for EVS electric vehicles and lithium batteries meant for other uses they know that starting in 2025 tariffs on imported Chinese semiconductors will Dr will jump from 25% to 50% so in other words the CCP is using unfair Trade Practices you can’t compete with them because they’re State subsidized they’re built through economic theft often times there are other things like again slave labor and just you know low wages that nobody can compete with and so in order to even the playing field they’re putting tariffs additional costs on the products that make it so that local companies can actually compete now where things get really interesting though is the real deeper reasons for this CNBC said this they said White House officials across a variety of agencies have raised concern concerns in recent weeks about China’s domestic subsidies for clean energy manufacturing it says they believe Beijing subsidies are helping companies overproduce cheap Clean Energy Products like solar panels and electric vehicles that outpace domestic demand in other words they can’t even sell enough in China and there the demand in China has already been met and they have much more than they possibly even need they know that if companies cannot sell that Surplus domestically within China us officials warned they could end up dumping them on global markets making it harder for nent clean energy Industries in other countries to compete they possibly go out of business frankly now look the Chinese Communist party is building solar farms and things like this but interestingly they also seem to be finding the limits of this type of Technology remember they’re saying domestic demand is basically been met and they have extra products because people don’t want them anymore now you’d think in China that if they have all the solar panels they could possibly need that you know they’d be 100% green energy by this point well that’s not really happening Reuters says this they say China’s break neck build out a solar power fueled by Rock Bottom equipment prices and policy support is slowing as grid bottlenecks pile up they can’t handle they know that it’s Market reforms increased uncertainty for generators and the best rooftop space is running short they note further in the main factors slowing the expansion of distributed solar installations built near the point of uh near the point of use mostly on rooftops is that there is not enough storage or transmission capacity to soak up the Excess power generated when the sun is shining in other words if you have a solar panel you know when the sun is out and it’s hitting the solar panels it charges them when the Sun goes away every day every night well it stops charging them so you have to have ways of storing The energy they just don’t have it other countries Germany and others have dealt with the same problem one of the problems of solar panels uh which other countries have found is of course you know has its benefits but if you can’t store the energy if you can’t use it properly if you can’t offload it when you need to it starts causing problems s and the CCP is running into this they’ve hit the limit they note in this article that in turn is leading Regulators to take away some of the price support that led to the rapid growth of distributed solar they have reached the dead end in other words the CCP built so many solar panels and such that it can’t even use them domestically it’s not even demand it’s the limits of the system itself they found the limit of solar they’re being blocked to an extent on exporting these because other countries don’t want the Chinese Communist Party dumping all that excess Supply on their countries which would in turn damage their markets but with that said look we’d imagine that maxing out the possible use of solar panels again you’d think you’d be 100% green you think you you solved climate change at that point right that all energy problems would just be solved overnight if that were to happen but in China interestingly we’re seeing what happens when you max it out we’re seeing what happens when you have all the solar panels you could possibly want because what happens well not what you’d imagine let’s put it that way what’s really interesting is that while the CCP has all these solar panels solar Farms wind farms and basically you know can’t even fit anymore on the grid domestically these products don’t seem to be reeni reliable enough for the CCP to actually depend on them they’re moving towards other things I’ll be talking about this more after we come back from a quick break experts agree Chinese Communist party has been pushing a green image for the international stage and is you know one of the world’s primary sources of solar panels and wind turbines they’ve been building more and more of this kind of Green Technology but domestically these products actually don’t seem to be reliable enough for the CCP to actually depend on what may be even more interesting is that there’s some funny business going on with China’s num numbers when it comes to renewable energy you know the viability of these products and what the validity of their reporting in the state media Reuters says that China’s latest monthly Power report excluded data on usage rates by generation Source after recent data showed declining utilization at Renewable Power Plants a trend that was expected to continue the numbers don’t line up in other words they know that in a monthly data release on Friday China’s energy Administration published only the average operating hours of all types of power plants for January to may they note as well that previous data released had broken down the statistics by generation Source including hydro thermal nuclear wind and solar generation it notes that usage rates for wind and solar had been expected to drop further after the government relaxed rules on Renewable Power utilization in May and they add that the report did not give a reason for China’s for the change in China’s energy Administration did not immediately respond to a request for comment now look remember those reports we mentioned earlier like South China Morning Post saying that China was ahead of the game right they’re on track to hit their climate goals and even before schedule that may just be Chinese Communist Party propaganda the data does not support it in fact the data contradicts it The Epic Times not this as the debate over dirty energy a term for energy production that is against climate efforts and hurts communities rages China continues to unveil new coal projects defying its government plans and the global climate effort concerns experts say a new report from the US Think Tank Global energy monitor Gem and the helinski bay center for research in energy on and clean air CA found that with China accelerating electrification of everything the nation approved a staggering 106 GW of coal power capacity and started construction on 70 GW in 2023 it notes that China also commissioned 47 GW of coal fired capacity and announced 108 GW in new projects in 2023 very strange they’re moving towards Coal Power if they have more solar panels than they can possibly use why not just use all that excess solar right while something’s going on with it they note that in addition to the Frantic pace of Permitting seen in 2022 the new approvals are equivalent to two new coal power plants per week and starting construction on one new plant per week they’re going out like building them nonstop in other words and that raises questions well if they have again excess solar panels and more than they can possibly use but they need energy why aren’t they building solar Farms using all the stuff they have laying around why are they going to Coal instead what’s wrong with the solar panels they note here that quote China is badly off track to meet several climate targets the country set for 2025 as a result of an increase in Coal use and investment in Coal Power said the report and no it added that power generation from coal climbed by 12% from 2020 to 2023 accounting for 44% of the overall expansion in power output despite the rhetoric of coal power playing a supporting role why are they building coal if they have more solar than they can possibly use if they really have all the solar panels and so much they have to like dump them on other countries why not just use them domestically what’s wrong with solar why is China not using them also look despite the propaganda about the CCP reaching those climate goals all all ahead of schedule as they’re saying the data does not line up the Diplomat said that China’s progress in reducing its carbon and energy intensity has been lackluster from 2020 to 2023 with only a 4% 4.6% reduction in carbon intensity and a 2% decrease in energy intensity during this period what’s going on it says this leaves the country severely off track to achieve its 2025 targets contradicting what we read earlier from the South China Morning Post saying that they’re all ahead of schedule six years ahead of schedule they say here according to the Diplomat according to carbon brief for China to meet its 2025 goals it would need to reduce carbon emissions and energy consumption in absolute terms not relative to China’s still growing GDP by 7% and 6% per year which is funny numbers to begin with remember they say 5.1 or 5.2 economic growth the numbers don’t support that either so they’re doctoring their GDP numbers basing it off this and then using that to doctor their you know Green Thumb footprint type numbers it’s doctored numbers on top of doctored numbers being used to promote a global image and then for some reason they’re building coal and actually nuclear which we’ll get into in a minute in order to offset this so why are they doing it they note that in 2024 and 2025 those are the numbers they said and this would require an impr presented a drop in carbon emissions and energy consumption even as China’s economy continues to grow data says otherwise even on that but regardless they say the modest targets set for 2024 suggest that China is effectively admitting its inability to meet the ambitious 2025 goals and maybe more maybe focusing on more achievable targets to maintain credibility so what’s going on well it seems what’s going going on is there’s a big green facade being put up the domestic projects are looking more like showrooms meant to sell products to the rest of the world the Chinese Communist party is pretending to have success with them all the solar panels we could ever need and they’re building Coal Power and actually nuclear right they’re hiding the actual data not even just on the green energy production but also on the GDP itself and then combining these using double layers of you know doctored numbers to present to the world a different image and then quietly the Chinese Communist part’s actually moving away from renewable energy they’re moving back towards dirty energy and other things most importantly while the rest of the world is focused on buying green energy and while the CP is putting on a Big Show with developing more in the sector while it builds solar panels and wind farms in reality the Chinese Communist party has its eyes somewhere else nuclear energy the CCP is rapidly building nuclear power plants and the direction it’s taking with nuclear power could make the CCP and notably Russia the two dominant world powers on nuclear energy I’ll be talking more about this exclusively on Epic TV that’s our
