During an MSNBC interview with Mika Brzezinski, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear claimed Senator J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) described rape as “inconvenient” during a September 2021 Spectrum News 1 interview, after which Beshear went on to say, “make him go through this.”
During the Spectrum News interview, Anchor Curtis Jackson asked Vance if anti-abortion laws should include exceptions for rape or incest. In response to Jackson’s question, Vance stated:
Look, I think two wrongs don’t make a right. At the end of day, we are talking about an unborn baby. What kind of society do we want to have? A society that looks at unborn babies as inconveniences to be discarded?
After misconstruing Vance’s response, Beshear allegedly said Vance’s relatives should be victimized, telling Brzezinski:
J.D. Vance calls pregnancy resulting from rape ‘inconvenient.’ Inconvenience is traffic. I mean it is, make him go through this.
In response to Beshear’s remarks, Vance stated on X, “What the hell is this? Why is @AndyBeshearKY wishing that a member of my family would get raped?!? What a disgusting person.”
When asked about Vance’s response by MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell, Beshear defended his statement, accusing Vance of misconstruing his comments, and accused Vance of playing the victim, stating:
Obviously I’d never wish harm on anyone. It just, again deflection, trying to make himself and Donald Trump the victims.
