Cardinal Blase Cupich, who delivered the invocation at this week’s Democratic National Convention (DNC), is under fire from traditional Catholics.
In dish-watery remarks about “human dignity and liberty” and “our failures to root out ongoing injustices in our national life,” inside a convention celebrating abortions and vasectomies, Cupich failed to once mention Jesus.
Right to Life Responds
The 75-year-old Cupich has been the Archbishop of Chicago since 2014. Members of the faith are chastising him for delivering remarks at a celebration honoring one of the most anti-life presidential tickets in United States history. Said Mary Kate Zander of Illinois Right to Life.
It is incredibly disheartening to see a local church leader who once aligned himself with our cause participate in such a deeply anti-life, anti-family event as the DNC. The Harris-Walz ticket is the most pro-abortion presidential ticket in U.S. history — and the Democratic [P]arty, particularly in Illinois, is more anti-life than it has ever been before. Cardinal Cupich missed a clear opportunity last night to condemn their vile, murderous policies and, in effect, betrayed the vibrant pro-life community that he once aligned himself with in our state.
Abortion provider Planned Parenthood set up a mobile abortion clinic outside the DNC in Chicago. It is thought that Democratic candidate Kamala Harris will lean heavily on the differences between Republicans and Democrats on that specific issue. Officially, the Catholic Church opposes abortion.
Cupich’s remarks only addressed life in vague ways, stressing responsibility, unity, and a dedication to solving national injustices. He didn’t mention abortion at all.
Harrison Butker
His failure to mention Jesus caught the attention of Harrison Butker. Butker is the Kansas City Chiefs placekicker who earned the ire of leftists for his remarks in defense of traditional values in May. He also noted that Cupich failed to display his cross:
America needs more Jesus not less. We need our shepherds to fearlessly lead and not be afraid to proclaim that Christ is King. It starts with bishops boldly wearing their pectoral cross outside their jackets.
Archbishop Viganò
Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, who was excommunicated by the Vatican in July over a perceived schism, said:
The scandalous endorsements of Blase Cupich and the heretical ultra-progressive Jesuits in favor of Harris and Walz and the radical Left woke agenda confirm the blood pact between the globalist Deep State and the Bergoglian Deep Church.
Viganò has been highly critical of Pope Francis, whom he refers to as “Bergoglio,” the pope’s last name. Viganò has called Francis a “false prophet” and a “servant of Satan.”
Cupich is closely aligned with Pope Francis, being one of the pontiff’s bigger appointments in the United States.
The invocation at the DNC stands in contrast to that of the RNC in Milwaukee. There, Archbishop Jerome Listecki of Milwaukee prayed “through Jesus Christ Our Lord” to assist “our elected officials and candidates always to protect our freedoms, to preserve our democracy, and to govern fairly.”
