welcome to Crossroads the Chinese Communist party right now as we speak is testing a new online surveillance system and this would effectively allow the Chinese Communist party to monitor every single thing that happens online tied to every individual now this new system it’s being proposed as a type of state-run digital ID which every single person in China at least would need to use for the internet and also some of the foreign programs run by the CCP they’re involved with it as well now the program is Raising some deeper concerns not just over digital privacy but also on human rights abuses censorship digital theft it’s not just limited to this program either it seems like across the board the Chinese Communist party for some reason right now they’re putting systems in place to stop information from getting out of China and look that of course allows the CCP to more deeply control what information gets shown to the world they can suppress it on one side and control it on the other Financial Times said this he said China’s powerful data Watchdog has proposed tighter controls over users online information including a nationwide roll out of digital IDs in a move that met sharp push back from leading technology experts now briefly on this some people will be like ah well China already requires you to use IDs and phone numbers to you know log into some Services yeah that’s true but this would be something something not just for the services and not just for the login it would be something that ties you to the entire internet not just on WeChat or something like that every single thing you do online would be directly tied to you now it says the cyberspace administration of China alongside the country’s Ministry of public security kind of like their FBI scia released draft regulations to issue unified digital IDs for internet users Friday last week it says concerns about the IDE has increased over the past few days the IDS which would be jointly administered by the CAC and police are initially envisioned as voluntary at first at least and would be used in place of real names and phone numbers to register an internet platforms but the proposal it says could drastically extend authorities oversight over online Behavior potentially covering everything from internet shopping history to travel itineraries and Prim than that now further in States the ministry of public security has published a pilot application on Chinese app stores to test the digital ID scheme and it says according to the app social media platform xia hang Shu and Alibaba owned Ecommerce giant Tau have signed up to test the new verification scheme so in other words it’s proposed right now but a couple of the major Platforms in China are going to be actually testing it now so even though it’s in the proposal phase they’re putting it into practice now let’s go into a few key points on this I had to look at the actual draft proposal from the ccb’s office of central cyberspace Affairs commission and a few things stood out to me you know one of the big things that says essentially they’re rolling out this new thing as a test a few platforms already are going to be implementing it and so as they implement this they’re already technically using it but to me what was most interesting is that basically it’s not just going to be the individuals held accountable under this new ID program it’s also the platforms that will be held accountable and so the Platforms in addition to the monitoring in addition to you being afraid of being punished the platforms will be punished if people violate the laws using their systems is what it seems like and so this is important because you know they say if you violate the law you could be punished not just for the individuals but for the platforms as well and remember under Chinese law it’s really broad the ccp’s law it’s not like in the US where you know we have the Constitution and normal laws like that they technically have one in China but they violate it all the time for the CCP the law can be just criticizing the party the law can be just releasing information on the Chinese economy the law could be maybe you’re a Christian you know something as simple as that that is what breaking the law is in China now like there were also other rumors about programs like this this being developed in China last year and allegedly the stuff last year uses blockchain and it seems that you know based on that we can get some ideas on what’s currently being rolled and what’s really beneath it looking at what they were rolling out before now look blockchain some of you may have heard about it it’s one of the Technologies at the core of Bitcoin you know these cryptocurrencies and what it does is it kind of creates an intranet not an internet but an intranet like an internal net that share between individual devices South China Morning Post said this last year they said China is set to start experimenting with a real name verification system based on blockchain which authorities say will allow internet users to log into online platforms without using their personal information such as phone numbers it says China’s stateb blockchainbased service network BSN and the ministry of public Security’s first Research Institute together launched the real name decentralized identifier and the decentralized part it seems is related to blockchain because it’s decentralized from the normal internet it’s like you have your normal internet and then a separate one that your identity is tied to that monitors the internet now they say the event was also attended by officials from the national development and Reform Commission and the National Data Administration now they note that one of these indiv one of these institutions with it which is honest ERT a subsidiary of the research institute will be responsible for issuing managing and verifying user identities through its cyber trusted identity CTI which is already used by Banks and other institutions to verify Chinese identities now so look based on that it’s tied to the banks and the same system as the you know digital Yuan the new system is very likely tied in with the ccp’s digital currency and of course the CCP is trying to get rid of paper money because it lets them track and regulate every single purchase and in addition to that that means it’s tied to the social credit system right A big one that means that of course every single thing you do online every single action you have every single purchase you make every individual your friends with every person you’re talking to all of that is being used to give you a score on whether you’re a good citizen or you’re a bad Citizen and if you’re a good citizen maybe you get more Rewards from the Communist Party like a dog getting doggy treats if you’re a bad citizen you get punished now look of course on the digital ID program this has serious implications for Chinese medicin because a lot of the information that comes out of China a lot of the chatter a lot of the anti-ccp rhetoric a lot of it’s from the neicon these are individuals who they know how to use language to get around the sensors they’ll use words that sound like other words they’ll use joke references to refer to public figures they’ll do things like that and they kind of have their own language for this and to an extent they’re able to get around some of the censorship like to an extent those individuals are a lot of the ones that will publish information and otherwise and get things out they will now be monitored to the finest detail this will also include religious dissidents you know one of the ways we know that what’s happening Tibet and Shing Jang and toong gong practitioners or to democracy activists and others or even house Christians a lot of it is because people will publish videos online uh showing for example the CCP demolishing churches or tearing down crosses or things like this and just about anybody who questions the regime now right it’s going to be hard for them to get information out like for example when we heard about these uh protesters trying to get their money out of the banks and they got arrested it’s only because people post this stuff online only because they make noise about it the West even knows it happens videos of mass protests government reports being released outside China all of this will be now much harder for people to see because the CCP has systems in place like a new extra net being thrown over the entire internet this will let them capture everything now even more for the financial sectors this has really serious implications because it means that most data on Chinese companies you know because West you can’t even audit them you know the state of the Chinese economy if you want to invest it’s just going to come from the Chinese Communist party you have to take everything the CCP says at face value because you will not be able to get inside information because of this censorship and because some of the laws they’re creating as well that even Outlaws you know criticizing them it’ll be very difficult for anybody to release anything that contradicts the ccp’s claims let is unless you have some very good sources let’s say right and of course you know in fact people risk even being charged as spies if they report this information or publish it because the CCP revised its Espionage laws to Define this as a type of spying if they release or publish real data on the state of the Chinese economy they can be arrested and it’s been happening lately now like a few years ago the Chinese Communist party also created new systems to track people trying to get around the great fire wall now the great firewall is the big you know large scale censorship program that was kind of the original net cast around the entire Chinese internet right the new one is kind of an additional one on top of that but this is the one making sure that people can’t get information out of China people can’t access news websites outside of China they can’t get on to Wikipedia or YouTube or Twitter or anything like that right now to get around it people used to have to use Virtual private networks VPN some of you might know these basically vpns let you get around some forms of Internet censorship and they bounce your internet connection off other connections and so if you’re in China you can fool you know the internet system and thinking maybe you’re in Switzerland or Canada or the us or something like that you bounce your connection off another connection and then you access the internet from that other connection now the thing with the CCP is they’ve been trying to stop that for a long time and they found a way just a few years ago to go after it Radio free Asia said this in 20120 they said authorities in Eastern Chinese Province J J recently detained and warned an internet user after they were detected using a circumvention tool to read information on Wikipedia which lies outside China’s complex network of blocks filters and human censorship known as the great firewall it says according to social media reports internet user Jong received a visit from police soon after using the open- source online encyclopedia Wikipedia suggesting that the Authority’s ability to monitor people’s internet activity in real time has been stepped up recently and a now deleted online announcement from the J J police screenshots of which are still available on social media this week Jong was accused of using the circumvention tool Lantern downloaded following a a by search to make repeated illegal queries on the Wikipedia website he was charged criminally for accessing Wikipedia C does that for a lot of reasons by the way uh for example covering up its persecutions covering up the tanaman Square massacre covering up the many issues that it doesn’t want people to be able to see now I’ve talked to Chinese students before and I asked them why do you think the CCP does that it’s because they’re lying to you the they don’t want you to see contradicting information to the propaganda they’re showing you and to keep the lie going they need to make sure you can see nothing else now like that said it’s not clear to what extent they’re able to monitor vpns it does seem at least in my opinion that they caught this individual because he was searching on one of the Chinese search engines you know BYU and they were probably monitoring the search for this but actually you know many vpns they’re controlled by China this is not that way well known there are some programs run by overseas dissident communities though still that do let people break through and there have been no signs that those are compromised but look back to this you know with these new controls and information people can still defect they can still get out of China they can still publish information like that but they’ll be doing it now at a higher risk to themselves you know we we’ll still get information out of China it’s just a little more dangerous for people they also might be able to get fake identities you know maybe you can fake somebody online or use a dead relative or something who knows um there are probably ways people can still get around it because they always find a way but this new online ID that the CCB is testing actually is just one piece of what is a new very large scale campaign being rolled out in China right now there’s a lot of other things right alongside this and across the board right now it looks like the CCP is terrified of information escaping China for some reason now look this comes as the CCP is making new laws on speech and as large sads of the Chinese internet are just suddenly disappearing I’ll be talking more about this so-called internet cleanse by the CCP after we come back from a quick break experts agree one of the best Communist party has been long known for its overarching sensorship and controls of Chinese citizens especially on the internet but now this is not only going to get worse as a new surveillance system is being tested in China they would eliminate privacy on the Internet by letting the CCP monitor all online activity the new system is being proposed as a state-run digital ID which every single person would need to use for the internet if they decide to fully roll it out and this increased control and information comes as the Chinese Communist party is making new laws on speech under the banner of you know public security and other really bizarre laws suggest tting the CCP looks like it’s afraid of something escaping China it’s afraid for some reason right now of information getting out of China and being seen by the rest of the world look the behavior is bizarre it looks like they’re trying to hide something and the Chinese Communist Party they’re taking it to like really just new extremes it was bad before it’s worse now censorship and surveillance look they were already in China some of the worst in the world these new changes go further now recently it was revealed that large swad of the Chinese internet just started Vanishing they started disappearing old news articles are disappearing on a large scale in China they’re erasing history now for some reason a huge portion of information is just being deleted New York Times said this they said a post on weed chat on May 22nd that was widely shared reported that nearly all information posted on Chinese news portals blogs forums social media sites between 1995 and 2005 was no longer available it says that in addition to disappearing the content there’s a broader problem China’s internet is shrinking there were 3.9 million websites in China in 2023 and that’s down from a third more than a third from 5.3 million in 2017 a third of the Chinese internet disappeared and they know the numbers right even on that they’re from the country’s internet regulator maybe it’s even more for all we know so look it’s not even just news articles or specific Pages at least over a million websites being suddenly gone a third of the Chinese internet just disappeared it’s also a smaller sample of news that has disappeared in China and these include you know key events scandals National tragedies things that make the CCB kind of look bad it’s also our articles of the early political careers of a lot of its top officials it’s all being deleted they’re erasing it and this Builds on a censorship campaign also that the CCP was carrying out a couple years ago just starting this whole wave a couple years ago this was being referred to as the Chinese internet cleanse and notably the Chinese Communist party was purging celebrities who it branded as immoral and remember in China morality or immorality is often tied to the ccp’s set of of Standards if you align with the ccp’s politics you’re politically correct you’re moral if you oppose the ccb’s policies you are not politically correct and you are a dangerous individual targeted by the state fair Planet said in 2022 this China’s Crackdown on what Beijing considers immoral celebrities has been growing in number in scale in late August last year China handed a list of artists and platforms and ordered the latter to ban the publishing of their appearances and keep in mind some of these are probably true but keep in mind also the CCB also fabricates a lot of information and also you know they choose who they go after and who they do not there’s usually other reasons on why they do it they note further in beijing’s new internet campaign you know this cleansing campaign from late January to late February for the Lunar New Year crushed any hopes of any celebrities whose reputation was ruined as their internet presence was wiped off to turn a new leave they say further that China’s cyber security authorities stated an official statement that they aim to regulate the quote chaotic celebrity culture including preventing immoral celebrity comebacks in parties and live streaming during the Chinese New Year now look again some of these people are probably guilty some of them probably did do terrible things some of them probably didn’t this is a common tactic by the Chinese Communist Party you group the good in with the bad you go after for example the criminals but then you go after the house Christians in addition to the criminals and you group that into the same campaign you go after legitimate criminals and then you target the dissidents alongside them this is how the CCP always works because then when you criticize it they say how could you criticize this part when of course you’re talking about this part it’s a common tactic they use it seems like the CCP was setting the stage you know getting rid of certain people who have platforms to the public that could potentially be a risk to the regime the CCP doesn’t want individuals having that type of power or that type of influence because that’s a threat to the Communist party and look it’s not just websites and news articles and celebrities getting disappeared it’s also just regular people suddenly being targeted more aggressively I’ll be talking more about how the CCP is targeting its own citizens even more aggressively right now and and also the tactics they’re using for it including saying it’s for the safety of citizens only on epct tv.com the uncensored stream platform of The Epic Times so if you’re watching on YouTube Facebook X Rumble there’s a link in the description below click on that you’ll get access to the rest of this episode and also our whole library of shows and hard-hitting documentaries and issues that really matter like the Chinese Communist party’s 100-year plan to defeat the United States the CCP is one of the biggest threats to America they’re using things like propaganda video games entertainment movies culture to subvert and influence the Next Generation and this unrestricted war against our country is one of the scariest but least understood issues of our time because you know it’s not tangible it’s not being done through the normal means like tanks and bombs and guns it’s being done through soft power and ideological subversion now I spent over a decade investigating the ccp’s subversion and it’s such an important issue that I made a documentary called The Final War which exposes this 100-year plot of the CCP to try to take down America if you’d like to find out more about the CCP is actually doing and its whole plot against America watch the final war you can find the link in the description below and I’ll show you all the trailer before we go exclusively to epct tv.com for the rest of this episode and hey I’ll see you all there the greatest threat facing the United States is the c CCP The Epic Times investigation team had studied the CCP for years but what we uncovered was yielding evidence beyond our imagination with chairman ma with the Prime Minister our talks have been characterized by frankness the Clinton Administration said oh don’t worry about it this will be a poison pill for China China’s strategic goal is to make sure that the US has four enemies and one of them must be a terrorist group we are giving of our life’s blood so that the Chinese Communist Party can survive and thrive
