The U.S. House of Representatives will vote on a continuing resolution (CR) later today in an effort to avoid a government shutdown. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) attached the spending legislation to the SAVE Act (the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act) — legislation he claims will secure U.S. elections.
In a post on X Johnson shared his appearance on Fox News this morning, and stated the proposed legislation would fund the government, and claimed the SAVE Act will prevent illegal immigrants from voting in the upcoming presidential election:
We must fund the government and secure our elections. Today we’ll be voting on legislation that does both of those things. Millions of illegal aliens have come across the border since Biden and Harris opened it wide. Only Americans should decide our elections.
Representative Cory Mills (R-Fla.) questioned why the legislation to secure U.S. elections is being voted on 47 days before the 2024 Presidential Election, and also pointed out the U.S. Senate said they would strip the SAVE Act from the CR, stating on X:
In a response to Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Elon Musk supporting the legislation, Representative Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) shared a video from last week where he voiced opposition to the CR, calling Johnson’s push to pass the legislation a “bait and switch,” stating on X:
