On Monday, Representative Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) voiced opposition to a temporary spending bill that would fund the federal government for six months. Describing the SAVE Act [the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act] as a “shiny object,” he questioned why it was attached to the spending bill, and said the continuing resolution does not cut spending, stating on X:
I refuse to be a thespian in the Speaker’s failure theater. The 6 month continuing resolution with the SAVE Act attached is an insult to Americans’ intelligence. The CR doesn’t cut spending, and the shiny object attached to it will be dropped like a hot potato before passage.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said the House would not vote on the stopgap bill due to the Republican opposition, stating, “No vote today because we’re in the consensus-building business here in Congress. With small majorities, that’s what you do. We’re having thoughtful conversations, family conversations within the Republican conference and I believe we’ll get there.”
Massie responded on X to the news of Johnson calling off the vote:
This week’s production of failure theater has been postponed! CR vote canceled this week. Thank you to everyone who shared my speech Monday.
