it’s 7: a.m. and you’re in the middle of making breakfast went bam the power goes out from your toaster to your microwave to your coffee machine everything’s been shut down of course Panic is bound to set in what do you do well for the Amish that’s just an average Tuesday now before you start thinking I could never survive without my air fryer let me tell you something crazy the Amish have been living without electricity for over 300 years and they’re doing just fine they’re not just surviving they’re thriving all while cooking up meals that would put our takeout orders to shame how did they do it well if you’re searching for the answer to that question then your search ends with this video at the heart of the Amish kitchen is the wood burning stove the true hero that controls the day-to-day running of the kitchen imagine cooking every meal on something that looks like a relic from a historical drama but in reality it’s the centerpiece of daily life for the Amish this stove isn’t just a backup for when the power goes out it’s their everyday all day multitasking kitchen tool and if you want to learn to live like the Amish this should be your everyday tool too heat cook bake this bad boy does it all think of it as the original multi-functional kitchen Gad gget except without the buttons and beeps so how does it work well it’s not as simple as flicking a switch or turning a knob first things first where does one even get a wood burning stove nowadays they’re not exactly standard in your average kitchen remodel however you can still find them in specialty stores or online through retailers like leman’s a store known for off-grid and Amish style living supplies or Home Depot many rural hardware stores carry them too and if you’re into the vintage look you can also check out local estate sales or antique shops once you’ve got your stove proper setup is essential it needs to be installed somewhere with good ventilation which means making sure the chimney or flu is properly fitted and cleaned regularly to avoid any blockages the Amish have this down to the tea by having a simple layout kitchen no fancy kitchen islands or open shelving filled with decorative bowls that never get used just efficient open space designed to make cooking as smooth as possible that’s how you should aim your kitchen setup to be to maximize the most use of your wood burning stove this doesn’t mean you should bring home construction to dismantle your beautifully set up kitchen island just because you want to cook like the Amish just simply move a few things around interestingly 90% of American households have never even used a wood burning stove however for the Amish cooking on a wood burning stove is second nature meanwhile for most most of us this level of control is like trying to play a video game on expert mode right off the bat using a wood burning stove takes some practice but it’s worth it if the Amish are to be trusted according to them good quality hardwood and small sticks and paper are what gets your fire going when it comes down to adjusting the heat controlling the stove’s air vents the little knob that isn’t hard to miss gives a great result and once the fire is going add bigger Logs with this you can begin cooking right right on the stove surface in today’s world where convenience is King it’s easy to forget that there’s a real joy in cooking something slowly over a fire and doing it the old-fashioned way sure it’s harder but it’s also more rewarding the key is in learning to manage the fire and use the stove efficiently the Amish have a perfect concept of achieving good old-fashioned fire to cook and the cast iron stove is a part of that concept if you’ve never experienced The Joy of Cooking with a cast iron stove let tell you it’s like controlling a small roaring Dragon but don’t worry it’s a dragon that only wants to cook your food to Perfection not burn your House Down cast iron stoves are built to hold heat for a long time which means that once you get them going you can cook just about anything here’s the deal you load it up with wood start a fire and voila heat radiates through the stove think of it like a slow burn unlike the high-tech ovens in most modern kitchens that seem to be racing Against Time and sometimes your patients cast iron stoves take their sweet time to get warmed up but once they’re hot they stay that way for hours this is why they’re a favorite of the Amish especially when it comes down to using it to bake bread and pies however it’s not all roses and perfectly baked pies cast iron stoves take some skill to manage you need to know how to control the fire feed it too much wood and it overheats starve it and your food will sit there stubbornly refusing to cook if you’re looking for where to get cast iron stove you can find them at antique stores specialty shops online or through secondhand sites like Craigslist or Ebay modern versions are still manufactured by Brands like Vermont Castings once you’ve secured one be prepared they’re incredibly heavy so you’ll need help moving it into place ideally near a chimney or vent for proper smoke ventilation setting up involves more than just plopping it down in your kitchen you’ll likely need to install a chimney or wall vent if your home isn’t already equipped according to the Amish Handbook of handling cast iron stoves starting the fire requires dry seasoned wood hard woods like oak or hickory are best begin with kindling and newspaper then add larger logs once it catches managing heat on a cast iron stove takes practice use a stove thermometer to keep the temperature steady especially for baking you can cook directly on the stove surface with cast iron pots and pans or use the oven compartment if it has one with a little patience and lots of practice you can begin to create meals just like that Amish community that warm not only the body but the heart and you can’t get that from a microwave another way the Amish achieve a well-prepared scrumptious meal without having to worry about the overboard electricity bills is through campfires cooking over a campfire might sound like something reserved for scouting trips or that one time you tried to make s’mores in the backyard but for the Amish campfire cooking is a respected tradition perfected over Generations now I’m not going to lie it sounds romantic and old timey but it’s also a lot of work first off setting up a campfire for cooking takes more than just a pile of logs and a match the Amish cooking hand book clearly states that you need to know what kind of fire you’re going for there’s a science to this for instance if you want a fire hot enough to fry up some crispy chicken you’ll need a teepe style fire that’s where you stack small sticks in a cone shape and let it burn fast and high want a slower burn for stews or soups you’ll need a log cabin fire with logs stacked crisscross like a well a log cabin it burns slower giving you those nice even coals for simmering what’s even more fascinating about the Amish campfire setup is the variety of tools and methods they use remember those cast iron stoves talked about earlier well the Amish make use of its counterparts in the form of cast iron pots along with skewers and grill racks to get the best out of their campfires they use tripods to hang pots over the fire or create simple grills with grates showing they don’t need fancy gadgets to make incredible food however if you’re newbie to the campfire business it’s best you take it step by step and not rush into the already perfected ways of the Amish so you don’t end up with more than just a burnt hot dog now it’s a known fact that the Amish are all about the simple life but even they have a few modern tricks up their sleeves while electricity is a no-go gas and propane are perfectly acceptable they’re like the secret sauce that helps the Amish manage without breaking their core beliefs kind of like finding a cheat coat in life but without any guilt although the Amish shun power lines it doesn’t mean they won’t use a little propane or gas to make life easier think of it like going off the grid but not quite Into the Wilderness propane powered appliances are popular in many Amish homes because they don’t rely on the same electric infrastructure they use propane for everything from cooking and lighting to heating water however the Amish life is all about moderation you won’t catch them installing a propane powerered cappuccino machine although to be honest that might be pretty great the most common gas or the propane appliances in Amish homes are stoves and ovens these aren’t your high-end Chef style stoves either if you’re interested in going the propane route yourself whether to live off grid or just lower your electric bill setting up a propane stove isn’t as hard as you might might think you can easily find propane powered appliances online or at hardware stores Brands like GE or frigidere offer reliable options you’ll also need a propane tank which you can purchase or rent from your local supplier they deliver the tank and hook it up for you easy peasy but here’s a tip get it professionally installed unless you’ve got a background in gas work this isn’t a DIY job trust me after my propane stove Adventure I’m all for calling in the pros Safety First so the Amish are traditionally known for avoiding electricity but in recent years some have embraced solar power yes the same solar energy that you might think is reserved for techsavvy City dwellers with their shiny solar panels and expensive gadgets but here’s the thing the Amish have found a way to incorporate this alternative energy without turning their homes into a space age Wonderland they use solar powered kitchen tools like solar ovens to keep their cooking Traditions going strong all while harnessing the power of the Sun the solar oven is a real GameChanger for Amish families who want to bake roast or slow cook without lighting a fire or using gas or using electricity and this can change everything for you too think of it like a portable Greenhouse for your food but much cooler a solar oven typically consists of a reflective surface that directs sunlight into a box where the cooking takes place the inside of the box is usually dark colored to absorb heat it’s science folks dark colors absorb heat better once the sun’s Rays hit the reflective panels they get funneled into the oven and trapped inside which makes it get really really hot you can cook everything from bread to slow roasted Meats inside just like an ordinary oven but without the need for coal wood or electricity in addition to the solar oven there are solar powered gadgets that the Amish have come up with to make life easier for them take for instance the solar dehydrator sounds catchy and electrically powered right however it’s a device that makes use of the sun’s energy to dry out fruits vegetables and meats helping preserve food without electricity I know solar powered cooking may seem like a modern Twist on an old tradition but for the Amish it’s simply a natural extension of their desire to live in harmony with the Earth they’re cooking with the power of the sun no wires no plugs just good old-fashioned solar energy so the next time you’re feeling a a little too dependent on your electric stove take a lesson from the Amish build a solar oven cook your favorite meal and soak up some sun while at it from solar ovens to brick ovens I’m sure you’re concluding in your head that the Amish would do just about anything to avoid seeing wires and Gadgets in their home well there’s nothing truer for the Amish brick ovens are wonderful rustic cooking behemoths that feel like a step back in time but without all the horse and buggy transportation struct struggles these ovens serve up more than just food they serve up a sense of tradition hard work and togetherness outdoor brick ovens are much more than just cooking tools for the Amish they are a way of life if you’ve ever had the pleasure of helping out at an Amish Brick Oven you know it’s a lot of fun sure not a lot of fun to set up but who hasn’t heard of the saying good things take time being a witness to the Miracles the oven creates I can’t sing enough Praises about these ovens but let’s talk about how these ovens are built first I mean it’s not like one can pop into a store and pick up a shiny new oven although I severely wish that were the case these ovens are often built by hand using materials like clay sand and of course bricks the Amish have passed down the knowledge of building these ovens through generations making it an art form in itself the oven is typically constructed with a solid brick base which is then lined with fire brick to retain the heat needed for cooking they’re often built outd doors where the air circulation helps with proper heating to get the best results these ovens need to be fired up properly a hot fire is built inside typically using seasoned wood and it takes a few hours to get the bricks nice and toasty once the oven is at the right temperature which according to the Amish is usually around 500° F it’s ready to bake bread pizzas or anything else that requires an intense even heat we all know the pleasure we get from the scent of baked bread from a nearby Bakery wafting up the streets now imagine how the Amish feel every day pulling a tray of golden brown bread from a glowing oven plus there’s the added bonus of being able to enjoy a fresh slice of warm bread straight from the oven slathered in butter if that’s not a simple pleasure I don’t know what is next up is one method you’ll think sounds like something out of a survivalist movie however it’s something the Amish have been doing for centuries and it’s burying food in the ground exactly the way our ancestors did Earth ovens are as old school as it gets and trust me there’s a reason they’ve survived the test of time if you think baking a cake in a regular oven is impressive try baking one underground this screams true dedication to your craft now before you start thinking this is a literal dig a hole and hope for the best situation let’s break it down the process is a bit more sophisticated and a lot more fun than just tossing food in a hole to cook with an Earth Oven you first dig a hole generally about 3 ft deep and wide enough to fit your food and Hot Rocks you’ll need some Stones preferably volcanic or River Rocks because they hold heat Like A Champion once the hole is dug you start building a fire at the bottom the fire burns for a while usually a couple of hours and those rocks get nice and hot soaking up all that heat like a sponge after that the fun begins you clear out the fire leaving just the hot rocks behind now it’s time to wrap up your food Meats potatoes vegetables whatever you’re cooking it’s carefully wrapped usually in leaves or burlap sacks and placed on top of those glowing rocks then the whole thing is covered up with dirt sealing in the heat like a natural oven and voila you’ve got yourself an underground slow cooker the food is left to cook for hours with all the flavors blending and becoming more intense as it steams and roasts in its earthy cocoon the result a meal that tastes like it was made by Earth itself delicious right yeah it doesn’t sound so theoretically but in practice it’s absolute heaven in case you didn’t know Earth ovens can reach temperatures of up to 700° F that’s hotter than your typical kitchen oven and because the heat is distributed evenly it makes for the juiciest most flavorful roast you can imagine of course the downside is you can’t just check your food every 10 minutes but Earth ovens are still 100 times worth it so the next time you find yourself rushing through a microwave dinner maybe take a moment to imagine what it would be like to cook with the Earth itself and who knows you might just find yourself digging a hole in your backyard hopefully your neighbors don’t get the wrong idea in their mind and call the police who knows educating them on the ways of the Amish will be fun have you ever tried saving your leftovers only to find them a week later looking like a science experiment the Amish have hacked the secret to making food last forever and it’s through canning canning is like the Amish version of meal prepping but way more impressive and without the help of a fancy instant pot it’s all about preserving food so it lasts through the winter or in our case until we finished our jar of pickles before they grow mold how then do the Amish do it they use Simple – tested techniques to can fruits vegetables and even Meats the basics involve heating jars to a high enough temperature to kill off bacteria sealing them tight and storing them away this might sound like something out of a survival show but it’s a common routine for the Amish it’s also the reason they can crack open a jar of peaches in February and still taste summer now if you’re thinking of giving this a try yourself don’t worry it’s doable even if you aren’t living on a farm the first step is gathering the right supplies the Amish keep it basic jars lids and a water bath caner which is just a large pot for boiling jars you can grab these canning Essentials at your local hardware store or even order them online heck they even sell kits that make you feel like a pro canner right from your kitchen once you have your supplies it’s time to prep your food let’s say you’re canning Tomatoes easy enough for beginners first boil them for a few minutes until the skin split kind of like giving them a quick sauna peel off the Skins stuff them into jars and top with a little salt and lemon juice seal the jars and place them in your water bath caner the trick here is making sure the jars are fully submerged so they seal correctly L after boiling them for about 40 minutes take them out and wait for that magical pop sound that’s when you know your jars are sealed and your Tomatoes will last for months without spoiling the Amish can everything apples corn even Meats like chicken and beef they smoke and dry meat for long-term storage drying is another Amish staple where they use low heat over time to remove moisture from foods like fruits and jerky imagine your favorite dried mango slices but done in a barn in instead of a dehydrator it’s part art part patience and totally genius when you think about it in fact the Amish live without the luxury of electric Refrigeration but they’re total pros at keeping food fresh their kitchens are stocked with shelves of preserved foods from jars of pickles to dried apples it’s a bit like walking into a vintage Pantry that feels oddly modern and how self-sufficient it is you may be wondering how else can the Amish cook without electricity well they do so flawlessly by learning how to adapt to the seasons and making the most of what’s growing around them they don’t just cook based on convenience or Cravings they cook based on what’s In season this kind of seasonal eating isn’t just trendy it’s practical in the spring and summer you’ll find fresh corn berries and tomatoes on the Amish table these ingredients make their way into everything from Hardy stews to pies by winter things change the fields might be bare but the shelves are stocked with canned fruits vegetables and meats that’s the be beauty of Amish food preservation it doesn’t matter if it’s snowing outside they’ve got all the flavors of Summer locked up in jars the real secret to Amish seasonal cooking lies in their relationship with the land it’s not just about eating what’s ripe it’s about understanding the cycles of nature Amish families don’t ask themselves what do I want to eat today instead they ask what’s ready to harvest their cooking follows the rhythm of the earth they know when to plant when to harvest and most importantly when to preserve you can try this yourself start by taking a look at your local farmers market or even your backyard garden if you have one see what’s in season and let that guide your meals think of it as a way to simplify your cooking no need to figure out what to make just let the ingredients tell you for example when you see fresh tomatoes in August think of all the possibilities tomato soup salsa or a fresh salad with basil come fall it’s time for squash sweet potatoes and maybe even a batch of homemade pumpkin pie you don’t have to be Amish to experience the satisfaction of eating something you’ve preserved yourself and speaking of apples have you ever thought about just how much flavor changes depending on the season a winter stew made with root vegetables has a depth of flavor that you just can’t get with Summer produce it’s almost like the weather itself infuses the food with extra warmth in the end seasonal cooking isn’t about following some Trend it’s about embracing what’s available connecting with nature and making the most of the food you have at your disposal you can start small maybe with one seasonal dish a week and let the flavors of the Season take you on a culinary Journey when it comes to cooking without electricity the Amish have truly mastered the art using resourcefulness and if you find yourself frustrated by your kitchen gadgets or the constant need to reheat meals maybe it’s time to embrace a little Amish wisdom give the insulated cookware method a try start cooking with a little more patience and maybe just maybe you’ll find that the most satisfying meals are the ones that take a little extra care and a little less power from cooking on wood burning stoves to preserving food the old-fashioned way the Amish approach cooking as a mix of tradition practicality and creativity I hope you’ve learned a thing or two from them
