The United States Supreme Court found that the District of Columbia ban on handgun possession violated the Second Amendment rights of its citizens. It prohibited an entire class of arms favored for the lawful purpose of self-defense in the home. The right to keep and bear arms in the United States is a fundamental right protected by the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution. It is part of the Bill of Rights, and by the constitutions of most U.S. states. Thomas Jefferson, one of the founding fathers of the United States said: "The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government."
