A senior United Nations human rights representative has stepped down due to the organization’s inability to prevent the Israeli persecution of Palestinians.
The director of the United Nations’ human rights office (OHCHR) in New York, Craig Mokhiber, has resigned from his position, stating that the organization has failed to adequately address the Israel-Palestine crisis.
According to Mokhiber, the UN has capitulated to the influence of the United States and the Israeli lobby, while the senior official contends that the “European, ethno-nationalist, settler colonial project in Palestine has reached its final phase.”
Mokhiber emphasized in a letter addressed to UN High Commissioner on Human Rights Volker Turk, published on Tuesday, that “once again, we are witnessing a genocide unfolding before our eyes, and the Organization that we serve appears powerless to stop it.”
The official unequivocally characterized the ongoing Israeli actions in the Gaza Strip as “genocide,” acknowledging that this term “has frequently been misused for political purposes.”
“However,” Mokhiber argued, “the current systematic killing of the Palestinian population, underpinned by an ethno-nationalist settler colonial ideology, leaves no room for uncertainty or dispute.
This is a text-book case of genocide. The European, ethno-nationalist, settler colonial project in Palestine has entered its final phase, toward the expedited destruction of the last remnants of indigenous Palestinian life in Palestine.
The governments of the United States, the United Kingdom, and a substantial portion of European nations bear full responsibility for the brutal attack.
They are not only failing to meet their international commitments but are also actively endorsing the assault by supplying weaponry, offering economic and intelligence assistance, and shielding Israel’s heinous actions through political and diplomatic means,” according to Mokhiber.
Furthermore, the shielding is fortified by the “Western corporate media, which is increasingly influenced by the state and has been consistently dehumanizing Palestinians to facilitate the genocide, disseminating war propaganda, and promoting national, racial, or religious hatred,” he emphasized.
Mokhiber believes that the United Nations used to have “principles” and “authority” based on the organization’s “integrity,” as was the case during apartheid in South Africa. However, he contends that the UN has lost these qualities over the years.
He pointed to the UN’s repeated failures in preventing genocides, citing events in Rwanda, Bosnia, the genocide of the Yazidis by the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS), and the Rohingya in Myanmar as examples.
He further stated that in recent decades, key parts of the UN have succumbed to the influence of the United States and the fear of the Israel Lobby, leading to the abandonment of these principles and a retreat from international law itself.
Mokhiber noted that this abandonment has resulted in a loss of global credibility, with the Palestinian people suffering the most significant consequences due to these failures.
To address the situation, Mokhiber suggests that the UN should draw inspiration from the principled stance taken by masses of people in cities around the world who are standing up against the genocide, even at the risk of beatings and arrest.
Additionally, he calls on the UN to abandon the “illusory two-state solution” and advocate for the creation of a “single, democratic, secular state in all of historic Palestine,” which he believes would lead to the “dismantling” of Israel, described by the official as a “deeply racist, settler-colonial project.”
