America [Music] 2025. Across college campuses, media outlets, and even government halls, the word socialism is no longer taboo. Polls show that more young Americans now view capitalism unfavorably than favorably. In popular culture, voices once dismissed as radicals speak openly of revolution, wealth redistribution, and the end of the free market system that built the very world they profit from. 75 years ago, one man warned this could happen. In February 1950, Senator Joseph R. McCarthy of Wisconsin claimed he held a list of communists operating inside the US State Department. His accusation sent shock waves through Washington and divided the nation. Supporters saw him as a patriot exposing hidden enemies. Critics called him a fraud who thrived on fear. Today, the term McCarthyism is often used as an insult, a symbol of paranoia and excess. But were his warnings truly without merit? Or was he simply seeing decades earlier the ideological battle that now defines America itself? Who was Joseph McCarthy? How did his experience and beliefs become so polarizing? Was he correct in warning of foreign and domestic attacks against our nation? Hello, I’m Colin Heaton, former history professor, Army and Marine Corps veteran, and welcome to this episode of Forgotten History. [Music] Joseph Raymond McCarthy was born on November 14th, 1908 near Appleton, Wisconsin. Before entering politics, he worked as an attorney and served three years as a circuit judge from 1940 to 1942. When war broke out, he left the bench to join the US Marine Corps, where he became a tail gunner on dive bombers in the Pacific, earning the nickname Tail Gunner Joe. After the war, McCarthy returned to Wisconsin with newfound confidence and a reputation as a tough nononsense Marine veteran. Using his military service as a political springboard, he successfully ran for the US Senate in 1946, defeating incumbent Robert Lefthallet Jr. by appealing to post-war patriotism and anti-establishment sentiment. Once in Washington, McCarthy initially struggled to distinguish himself until the early years of the Cold War when the fear of communist infiltration offered him an opportunity to seize the national spotlight. He emerged onto the national stage in February 1950 during his speech to the Ohio County Republican Women’s Club in Wheeling, West Virginia. there. McCarthy claimed he possessed a list of 205 communists working inside the US State Department, a claim he would later revise multiple times. The statement sent shock waves through the country. Newspapers splashed his words across front pages and Washington was thrown into a frenzy. But when pressed before the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, McCarthy was unable to produce a single verified name. His critics accused him of grandstanding and capitalizing on America’s growing fear of Soviet espionage to elevate his own career. But his supporters believed something deeper was taking shape. That McCarthy was giving voice to an anxiety that had already taken root in postwar America. The fear that the greatest threat to the nation might come from within. McCarthy further exploited existing tensions such as the Korean War, the fall of China to communism in 1949, the Soviet atomic bomb test also in 1949, and espionage cases like Alger and Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, and see our video on the Rosenbergs. Americans were primed to believe there were reds in the ranks. Seen as the pointman on anti-communist investigations, he chaired the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigation starting in 1953. McCarthy claimed the US government, the Army, and even the White House were riddled with Soviet sympathizers. His committee interrogated State Department officials, Voice of America broadcasters, and Army personnel, often with no credible evidence, relying on innuendo, guilt by association, and coerced testimony. Dozens of careers were destroyed. People lost jobs, or were blacklisted simply for refusing to name names. The FBI, under Jay Edgar Hoover, quietly fed McCarthy some information. Though even Hoover grew wary of his reckless accusations, then came the Hollywood Red Scare. Although McCarthy himself did not lead the Hollywood investigations, his spirit drove them. The Hollywood crackdown was spearheaded by the House Unamerican Activities Committee, which had begun its anti-communist probes in 1947, focused on the film industry. The FBI and studio bosses already had loyalty files on hundreds of writers, actors, and directors, with most of it being gossip, hearsay, or guilt by association from union activity in the 1930s. Targeted were the Hollywood 10, a group of writers and directors, including Dalton Trumbo, Ring Lardner Jr., and Edward Dimtrich, who refused to testify before the HUAC citing First Amendment rights. But some did cooperate like Lewis B. admire, Walt Disney, and Ronald Reagan, who named others during testimony. Others did not. Will Gear, best known as Grandpa Walton on the iconic TV series The Waltons, was a bonafide Communist Party USA member, joining in the 1930s and active in labor organizing and Communist movements in the 1930s to4s. Gear was blacklisted in the early 1950s for refusing to name names. Those who refused to testify were held in contempt of Congress with some sent to prison for 6 to 12 months. Studios then issued the Waldorf statement on November 1947, a press release by studio heads declaring they would not employ known communists or anyone refusing to cooperate with the HUAC. That was the official start of the Hollywood blacklist, a deacto system of censorship through fear. That list would grow. The studio bosses weren’t exactly McCarthyite ideologues. They were businessmen protecting profits. They feared government retaliation, boycots, and losing military contracts during the Cold War. Afterward, studios issued the Hollywood blacklist, effectively banning suspected communists from working. Hundreds of screenwriters, actors, musicians, and directors were blacklisted, many for mere political associations or attending left-leaning meetings in the 1930s. Certain notables affected were actor Charlie Chaplan who was forced into exile, actor and director Orson Wells, and later blacklisted screenwriters writing under pseudonyms. Actor Marine officer and OSS operative Sterling Hayden was also targeted as he was an open supporter of communism, at least for a while, having admired Yseph Bro Tito and his communist with whom he served in Yugoslavia fighting the Nazis during World War II. He joined the Communist Party USA in 1946. Hayden was one of the highest profiled celebrities involved. In 1951, Hayden voluntarily appeared before the House on American Activities Committee. He admitted his short-lived CPUSA membership and named names of other leftist colleagues. Kazan’s cooperation, in particular, naming former Communist Party members from the group theater, made him one of the most controversial figures in Hollywood history. His 1999 honorary Oscar still drew protests. The result was that unfriendly witnesses who refused to cooperate were unemployable for years, many being exiled to Europe or working under pseudonyms. By the 1970s, blacklisted writers were retroactively honored, but many never recovered financially or psychologically. In a striking reversal, Hollywood has gone from blacklisting communist to blacklisting conservatives. The industry that once punished leftists for their beliefs now ostracizes anyone who strays from its dominant progressive narrative. Actors, writers, and directors who voice conservative or traditional views risk being dropped from projects, losing representation, or quietly written out of future opportunities. My personal friend Kevin Sorbo and actor James Woods are prime examples of actors who have been blacklisted by the progressive left in Hollywood. The same culture that once demanded loyalty oaths now enforces ideological purity through social pressure and professional isolation. But the tide is beginning to turn as independent studios and creators are starting to challenge the monopoly, building spaces where free expression and political diversity are no longer taboo. Largely McCarthy was seen to have done more harm than good. And the Senate formally centured McCarthy in December 1954 for conduct unbecoming. He lost power, influence, and eventually drank himself to death on May 2nd, 1957 in Bethesda, Maryland. His name became shorthand for reckless accusation, McCarthyism. But looking back through the lens of time, were his accusations unwarranted? McCarthy’s targets were communist, but in recent decades, we have seen the rise of Marxistleaning progressive Democrats and Islamists. The movement McCarthy once warned about no longer hides in the shadows. Today, several of America’s most recognized political figures speak openly in favor of socialist or Marxist principles. What was once treated as subversion has become a legitimate political platform. Senator Bernie Sanders was among the first to rebrand socialism for a modern audience, calling it democratic socialism. His message of wealth redistribution, universal healthcare, and government control of major industries found strong support among younger voters frustrated by rising inequality. Representative Alexandria Okaziocortez followed closely behind using social media to popularize many of the same ideas. Her proposals such as the Green New Deal, her aim to remake the American economy through centralized planning and aggressive regulation and initiatives that critics argue echo McCarthy’s greatest fears about creeping collectivism. In New York, Assemblyman Zoran Mandani has taken the ideology even further. A self-described democratic socialist, he has argued that capitalism must be dismantled to achieve justice. He represents a growing wing of American politics that no longer sees socialism as radical, but as necessary. What McCarthy once described as infiltration has evolved into acceptance. These politicians are not hidden agents, but elected officials with national platforms and millions of supporters. Their policies are debated on mainstream television and embraced by much of the academic and media class. McCarthy’s claim that socialist ideology could one day take root inside the American political system was dismissed as paranoia. Yet in 2025, those very ideas have become part of the nation’s everyday political language. The ideological battle he once described is no longer hypothetical and is being waged openly in campaign speeches and congressional hearings. In the decades after McCarthy’s death, the enemy he warned of seemed to fade. Communism had lost its cold war appeal and America entered an era of confidence. Yet beneath the surface, new groups were forming, movements built not around party membership, but around ideology. Among them, none have embodied that transformation more than Antifa. Following in the footsteps of the Weather Underground, and see our video on the Weather Underground, also known as the Weatherman. Antifa came to the forefront several years ago. The name comes from anti-fascist, a title few question at first glance, and see our video on Antifa. But behind the label is an organization that operates without central leadership or formal structure. Antifa cells exist in cities across the United States, coordinated loosely through online networks and encrypted communication. They share symbols, tactics, and a worldview rooted in revolutionary Marxism or the belief that capitalism and traditional government must be dismantled by any means necessary. During the unrest of recent years, Antifa activists have taken to the streets under the banner of resistance. What begins as protest often descends into chaos, arson, vandalism, and clashes with police in cities such as Portland, Seattle, and Minneapolis. Federal courouses have been firebombed, businesses destroyed, and entire neighborhoods left in ruins. Their stated goal is to oppose oppression, yet their actions often target the very communities they claim to defend. Funding and organization remain deliberately obscured. Donations are filtered through activist nonprofits and online fundraisers, while sympathetic organizations provide legal aid and supplies. The lack of a clear hierarchy allows Antifa to avoid accountability. When violence erupts, no single leader can be held responsible. This decentralized model mirrors the very subversion McCarthy once described, an ideological network without uniforms or borders. Public officials have struggled to define Antifa. Supporters call them a movement, not a group. Critics describe them as domestic extremists whose methods resemble the revolutionary cells of the 20th century. Regardless of terminology, their guiding philosophy is unmistakably anti- capitalist. They reject the rule of law as a tool of oppression and believe that destruction is a legitimate path to justice. To Joseph McCarthy, Antifa would have represented the final evolution of his warnings. No longer communist hiding in government post, but activist operating in plain sight, organized, protected by sympathetic voices in media and politics, and driven by the same conviction that the American system must be torn down. The senator is long gone, but the struggle he foresaw now plays out in the streets of the nation he tried to defend. As ideological movements gained momentum in the United States, a new alliance began to form, one that McCarthy himself might have recognized. Progressive and socialist organizations often found common cause with Islamic advocacy groups united by shared opposition to western capitalism, traditional values and American foreign policy. Politicians such as Bernie Sanders, Elan Omar, and see our video on her. Rashida Talib and Zoran Mdani have spoken openly about restructuring the nation’s economy, expanding government control, and redefining the nation its moral direction. In many cities, these movements overlap with cultural or religious activism that seeks to reshape local governance, sometimes challenging the constitutional boundaries that define American law. Across parts of the country, lawmakers have already moved to counter attempts to establish parallel communities or systems that operate outside the Constitution. What was once unthinkable, the creation of legally distinct enclaves guided by Islam is now a topic of real legislative concern. Were McCarthy alive today, he would likely be as vocal as ever. His hearings will not only target political radicals, but also the coalitions that unite them. The merging of far-left ideology, cultural activism, and Islam that share a vision of transforming the American system from within. To his critics, McCarthy remains a symbol of excess and persecution. Yet, his central warning endures, that a nation can be conquered not by armies, but by ideas. The battle for America’s soul was never meant to be fought with weapons, but with belief, conviction, and control of culture. 75 years after his rise, one truth remains clear. McCarthy may have been wrong about the names, but not about the danger. Perhaps he was right all along, just 70 years too soon. Thank you for watching this episode of Forgotten History.
